The Foreigners Making Life in Japan Difficult for Non-Japanese

Hey guys!

Recently I've been thinking about sharing my thoughts more often here on the Abroad in Japan Patreon about contemporary issues within Japan. With that in mind, here’s my first ‘fun’ post about about a steamer who’s been terrorising Japan over the last half year and finally got arrested last week.

————————

One of the most frustrating aspects of living in Japan is when a foreigner behaves poorly, as it often reflects negatively on all foreigners.

I'm not entirely sure why this is the case. perhaps it’s due to Japan’s homogenous nature, but I've experienced it firsthand in 2017, when good old Logan Paul visited Japan and unleashed hell across Tokyo, before mocking a victim of suicide in the Aokigahara forest.

Back then the media spotlight quickly turned on foreign YouTubers in Japan and I found myself on Japanese TV, attempting to clarify that not all foreign YouTubers in Japan are inherently shit.

The whole experience was surreal, with the entire segment overshadowed by the ridiculousness of a Japanese presenter approaching my front door to ask “Are you Youtuber?”

Recently, you may have seen news about a streamer in Japan who had been causing chaos for six months. The dickhead in question, Johnny Somali, has gained notoriety for all the wrong reasons—from wandering the streets shouting “Nagasaki”, “Hiroshima”, and “Fukushima” in public, to screaming on trains, harassing other streamers, and even trespassing on construction sites and vehicles (like you do).

The culmination of his antics was his arrest, streamed live as he was apprehended by six police officers in Osaka. By all accounts, an incredibly enjoyable stream.

Currently, he is detained for up to 28 days while authorities decide on his punishment. Given his actions and the subsequent media attention—so much so that even the Japanese prime minister commented on the nuisance of such ‘Youtube influencers’—it's hoped that he'll face deportation and be barred from re-entering Japan.

Of course, he is not representative of YouTubers, streamers, or foreign influencers in Japan, and yet it's been infuriating to see one person tarnish the reputation of an entire community.

It doesn’t help that, a few weeks ago, another foreign streamer was arrested for entering an abandoned building in the Fukushima exclusion zone—a decision that garnered similar media attention. It's certainly concerning to think that such incidents might become more frequent, especially now that Japan is reopening, making life increasingly challenging for the 99% of foreign influencers here who aren’t imbeciles.

Over the past decade, I've been fortunate to travel across Japan, filming diverse locations without any real issues and Japan is honestly a very welcoming place for content creators. It's distressing to see a few individuals jeopardise that atmosphere and exploit the kind nature of the people of Japan.

We can only hope his time in Japan will come to an end and his deportation can serve as an example to other influencers hoping to follow in his footsteps, though I do worry he may be left off. I guess we’ll know in coming days.

Publicly, I’ve held off discussing Johnny Somali until now, as it’s just the most mundane, unimportant issue and naturally I don’t want to aid his fame in any way shape or form. That being said, many YouTubers and publications have covered him to such a degree he’s already received considerable notoriety for his actions. And with folks asking me for my thoughts on it all, I’ve finally caved in and decided to mention it on the Podcast at the very least - especially as one man’s actions threaten the community as a whole which I’m proudly a part of.

We can only hope despite the platform ‘Kick’ refusing to outright ban him, Japan at the very least, will ban him from being able to set foot in this country ever again.

Fingers bloody crossed🤞.

Let me know your thoughts below though guys! Going forward I’m keen to talk about contemporary issues - good and bad - here on Patreon and have a discussion with you all. For better or worse, this is the first!

Hope you’ve all had a great start to the week so far,

Chris

If Johnny Somali had done even the slightest of his offenses in Singapore or a Middle Eastern nation, he'd have been swiftly caned (in Singapore) and/or imprisoned.

Enoch Keoki

Yep, both Johnny and Logan are twats. Fuck them both. Honestly what kind of person does the shit they do? They're not even human at that point...they're lower then humans. I am wondering about the person who was caught in an abandoned building...I know you, Connor and a lot of Youtubers have covered abandoned buildings in Japan and have even entered them. What are the laws exactly? Was the guy arrested because it was in the Fukushima exclusion zone specifically? And if we're talking about Youtubers and how some aren't exactly...great? I was wondering your thoughts on Tokyo Lens aka Norm? There's been some...things...popping up, that aren't very nice, about him and what he's saying to people in his comments/how he acts off camera. I know all Youtubers probably act differently on camera vs off camera but the things people are saying about Norm are disturbing. I thought Norm was a nice guy...now I'm doubting it and I'm wondering if other Youtubers are also acting nice but are really not...

The "Ugly American" was an image created by post-war tourists behaving poorly in the 50's-60's and with anime fans in recent times I was hoping that was disappearing in Japan. Those like you, Chris, are sorely needed to combat the renewed rise of this image (British close enough to American) from these vile people. I know fans of yours will represent much better than that when they go to Japan, let's all do our best to show what people from Abroad are REALLY like!

RANDALL BLAIR

In case anyone hasn’t seen, there was something put up by “IRL moments” on YouTube of a local biker who caught up with him after seeing the clip of him on the train and when he asks for an explanation- Somali SHITS himself. Not all heroes wear capes, this one wore a helmet!

Hayley Khan

Rather than using his stage name Johnny Somali, use his real name instead, Ismael Ramsey Khalid. The Japanese found out that using his name when he’s around while on camera, it becomes a repellent against him and his antics. Also, I suppose that we should also recognise that we shouldn’t feel sorry that the idiot somehow represents the whole non-Japanese-aligned streamers and videographers and either way, it’s just ammunition for the xenophobic and nationalist sections of the Japanese population to make their noise. Unfortunately, there’s a significant number of them in the traditional Japanese media, and a lot of the older folks would believe in their narrative. And those older folks own businesses, which is also unfortunate.

Darcanis

Respect. Necessary everywhere, Expected in Japan. Those folks like Logan and Johnny that don't have it are truly just immature jackasses.

Doug Brown

This is the first time I've heard about Somali but I hope to hell he's punished appropriately. Looking forward to more posts like this one!

Soph

Kick as a streaming platform is quite permissive. You get plenty of nasty words and other "breaking the limit" type of show there. You don't get easily banned from Kick.

Youhannes Sulistyo

Kudos for not giving him another notorierity on public platform. It is a very well-thought decision not to react or respond, be the "hero" that join the crowds in condemning the troll. The trolls demands attention, and he begets none, thanks to you. As for Japan itself, and their perception about foreigners, they need to understand that foreigners are what makes Japan's image in the world. Japanophiles like you are what kept Japan being the world's premiere destination. But of course, cracks will let some nuisane like Paul and Somali into their sanctuary. Again, in Virginia US, we got a reminder why limitless freedom to prank and to defend yourself will lead to some extreme cases. Between that and shooting of Abe Shinzo, and then kaiten sushi licker attack. Japan has their own problems alright, but being like one of us, they will easily blame outsiders. Japan maybe homogenous, but blaming outsiders is not just exclusively their problem. Immigrants are blamed for everything too in US and Europe. It is just very easy to say "not me".

Youhannes Sulistyo

I think we're all rejoicing at his apprehension. We can only hope he is taken care of. I would hate for any foreigner who desires to visit Japan unable to do so because of people like him and Logan Paul ruining it for the rest of us. I've always wanted to go to Japan, and so I'd hate to have them interfere in my ability (or anyone else's for that matter) to do so.

Sean W Gumm

It's outrageous that certain people abuse the Japanese culture (of tolerating western behaviour to a certain extend) just for their own benefit. At the same time mocking the Japanese hospitality and culture. Only option is to officially charge and sentence this guy and kick him out of the country. With a criminal record and being deported from a country hopefully it will be difficult for him to enter many other countries. At same time YouTube should delete the videos and account. No soft measures for these types!

Eric

I'm so glad Johnny Somali has been arrested. When I saw his video I was horrified and embarrassed as he says he's from America. Nobody deserves to be treated like that - especially the Japanese. I hope he isn't allowed to return to Japan. I also hope that he isn't allowed to have a YouTube channel if he continues making such inane and disgusting "content". I've not seen the other guy you mention - and I think I'll give it a miss. Thanks Chris for being a force for good.

Betsy Nelson

From what I understood is that Kick doesn’t care, so long as it results in growth. Twitch at the very least have banned “anything for views” content creators like Ice Poseidon, and adjusted their guidelines to deter users from doing similar content. This is one of the reasons why I hope that Kick never succeeds; growth at any means necessary including disgusting acts like the recent Ice Poseidon controversy should never happen to maintain a peaceful society.

Nicholas Nguyen

It's always a few douchebags who ruin things for everyone else. Your channel is the reason I am sitting in a hotel room in Tokyo right this minute. My tour group starts in the morning (I know, not ideal) but good for this inexperienced solo traveler's first visit. No trashy vlogger could have such a positive influence as your channel ( and Sharla and Quinlan, etc) so keep up the good work.

Susan Ray

I have a lot of respect for the balance you maintain between just trying to keep your content friendly and positive but also being realistic about needing to address heavier problems that come up. The man was a menace and I know you didn't speak of him so he wouldn't get more fame but it is helpful to the community to see "the other side" aka a respectful and kind YouTuber who shames people of these actions (you lol). It's sad there are people who give assholes like that a platform to begin with but you're fighting the good fight and that's a lot to be said rather than sitting in the background doing nothing

Brea McHoul

I can relate to the frustration of being unfairly associated with a group due to one person's misconduct, and it saddens me to see it happening to you. I'm part Somalian and it's disheartening to see this guy using our name in his online handle. It's important to remember that an individual's actions should never define an entire group and instead be evaluated on our own choices. Let's stand together for understanding and fairness. I hope he gets what's he's due and that Japan will see his actions as an individual and not lump all content creators together with him

Heylow Bond

You're correct of course, but I highly doubt the platforms would do anything against it. It's viral content. It generates profits for them. Sadly that's how social media works, all for the money. So the only way to control this is: don't watch trashy, morally shitty content... (well, and maybe as a bonus, report it)

Hirami

Sadly there'll always be dickheads like them, and I'm afraid there Wil be more. It's like a the popular stuff, be it AI, be it wastefulness, a trend catches on (and they do gather lots of social media attention and thus money) so there will be copycats. So I think it's even more important for people like you Christ, and your friends, to speak up and remind your people go condemn this kind of behavior. I know it's easier to keep silent (just like with political topics) but the "bad" guys won't ever be silent. So... These incidents also underline how important it is to have you (and others) who represent the good guys - you show willingness to learn the language and about the culture, and show passion for Japan. You connect with the Japanese People. And that's the important bigger part you do here. Show everyone inside and outside of Japan that there are many people with a passion for this country. Don't let the assholes win.

Hirami

I think these kinds of posts are great Chris! Understandable why you don’t make videos about this type of thing, but it is great to hear about these issues from your perspective since you’re in Japan and feel the fallout directly. Definitely would like to hear more stories (good and bad) like this. As for this guy, fingers crossed for deportation and exclusion 🤞🏻 he shouldn’t be allowed to behave like that anywhere, let alone a peaceful and polite country like Japan. Sadly I doubt the platforms will do anything about it, but we can live in hope.

Chelsea Anderson

YouTube should just ban these kind of content or not monetizing them

Deric Chong

I have been thinking a lot about the reaction he got overall from the community. I did wonder at one point if the pile on was related to him being black cause he does sticks out very much in Japan. This of course is not to excuse for his behavior but I have seen other streamers acting very badly in Japan and did not get the level of attention that he got. Having said this I don’t think streamers/YouTubers acting like idiots is problem unique to Japan perhaps it’s most likely more obvious because Japan is such a safe harmonious place., but to me it’s more of an issue that those who want to go viral. While in my heart I still think the pile on was slightly motived by overt racism, he could rot in jail! lol

Johanne Almoza

Happy you brought this topic up. Not just regarding Somali but also the other streamer, who's been in the IRL streaming game for a long time now. Although Somali is definitely on a whole different level, I think the latter guy got away a bit too lightly among his peers. This is more of a Twitch viewer perspective, but what I find fairly disappointing is that a lot of people in the "IRL streamer bubble" refuse to talk about these things because they "don't want drama" or because the people in question are their friends so they couldn't POSSIBLY say something negative about them. And that is kind of part of the problem. Some people need their friends to speak up and tell them that what they are doing is stupid instead of just looking at the ground, ignoring every negative aspect like the plague.

VanillaCoke1956 .

In my ideal world such childish behaviour is met the same way it is in a proper classroom: the teacher and other students immediately and outrightly ignore the misbehaving child till they feel painfully invisible.

Muhammad Fawaz

I'd love to see him play games in Easter Europe. Yikes.

ShellShock11C

Logan Pauls stupid fucking hat still infuriates me. And Somali has that look like he just got brain trauma and can no longer do math or eat without drooling on himself.

ShellShock11C

Thanks for sharing your opinion about this topic. I agree that he should not be authorized to re-enter Japan (as should Logan Paul btw...). However, I also think the platform (not sure if he's on TikTok or some other one...) should take responsibilities and ban him for inapropriate behaviour. This kind of content should not be allowed as it paints a bad image for other creators and is a bad influence on his audience which, let's be real here, is mainly composed of "dumb" kids... He also played on the japanese kindness/politness to make this kind of content. I am sure that it wouldn't have gone like this if he was trying to make such content in a less tolerant country. If he tried making these videos in Russia, for example, it would probably go a totally different way for him...

Mic Mike

It sucks that Japanese media / conservatives immediately turn any stupid thing done by non-Japanese (or *perceived* non-Japanese) people into their favorite frame of "maybe... all Foreigner's are bad? Maybeeee time for another 265 years of sakoku?" It's the same kind of xenophobia you see everywhere. We've got this beautiful blue marble of a planet, but too many people are more concerned about keeping Johnny Foreigner out of their backyard than anything else.

Aldo de Leeuw

The Mizzy interview with Piers Morgan is a hilarious car crash to witness.

Abroad in Japan

One can only hope, that Japan stays as welcoming and friendly to foreign tourist and foreigners who decide to live in Japan. Its sad that people need to do the wrong things just to grab a smidgen of attention with no real repercussions. 😕

Draconis

I don’t understand why these sites aren’t banning these bullies. Their hunger for fame at the expense of others is disgusting. It seems to me that poor behaviour is applauded by some in society and by these social media sites, who allow them to continue. I hope he’s shitting himself in prison!

Trina Dobson

It is unfortunate that "good manners" is no longer taught by parents, or learned by young people. Here in the U.S. of A. these light headed individuals are in abundance. It is terrible that they are now flourshing across the oceans.

Sheldon Aubut

I agree that he needs to be made an example of, harsh punishment for his actions and hopefully it'll deter others behaving like this in the future! I've never heard of him before today but he looks plenty old enough not to be doing stupid shit like this!

Sarah and Jae

Was a spit-water-out-of-mouth moment when you touched on Joey (Not TAM Joey). I only know him briefly through another Twitch streamer, and he genuinely looks like an OK guy. A pity he had to go and have a brain fart moment by trespassing into restricted compound. Hopefully he can cut out that sort of shit for his own good.

Steven

He needs to be deported, banned from RE-entering and heavily fined to cover all costs involved. What a knucklehead!

Paula

There was a British streamer called Mizzy who managed to get attention by doing similar kinds of 'pranks' in the UK. he was everyone rewarded by an appearance on Newsnight and Piers Morgan's talk show. Mizzy and Johnny Somali are, in part, a product of the attention ecosystems they cater to but that doesn't excuse the choices they make. Your position on his antics was not exactly difficult to imagine and I understand the reluctance to push any extra attention his way but I think he's done that all himself now. The Japanese legal system is notoriously unforgiving and I cannot see anyone going lightly when they inevitably review his content and actions. If he just gets deported and banned, he should consider that lucky. I have a feeling the Japanese legal system will attempt to make an example out of him to discourage copy cats but I am not sure what that will look like. That he is banned from streaming and the internet is probably already causing him huge mental distress. Easy to grin and play up to a chatroom but he's now in detention by himself.

Christopher Kavanagh

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this, I can't comprehend why anyone would go to Japan to do this. It is outright distasteful and disrespectful. I am in Japan in November myself for my 30th birthday and will be recording content around Tokyo and, mainly Akihabara and, in preparation, I an already contacting stores asking for permission to record on site as a matter of politeness, and asking people I know in Japan (either people who have been recently or live there, asking friends, people on the AIJ Discord and even the likes of PremierTwo on his streams) for recommendations in Tokyo. Thank you for remaining respectful in all aspects of your content, and for your open discussion and advice topics!

Liam Miles

Chris, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this issue. You know, there are several Japanese streamers, not just foreigners, who do stupid things. As you said the saddest part is that these people tarnish the image of streamers. I think this kind of thing is common in many fields. A bad image is more memorable than a good image. It's a real shame.

Satomi Arihara

I went to Tokyo alone 2 weeks ago for the very first time, being an Asian myself I found it easier to get accustomed to Japan's society norms (and also because I didn't have anyone with me to contribute noise pollution with). My short trip here made me feel pressured to avoid annoying the locals here, this asshole has super thick skin to perform such antics in Japan!

Choong Chin Wei

relax, bud

Olaf Lara

The dick head only has 10,600 followers, more people saw his antics live than actually watched his streams

Eric Dunn

I'm so happy that this dick head has been arrested. I felt so angry that he was just so nasty to the Japanese, knowing full well that it's illegal to start a fight in Japan. On the occasions he did get smacked, he (yes, he) called the police. I know that it was hard for the police to make a case against him. I just hope that he serves time (at least for the trespassing). I then hope that him and his so called 'camera man', get kicked out of the country and banned. The way that he disrespected the Japanese was beyond appalling. Kick needs to be fined as well for allowing this to happen. Unfortunately, justice against online platforms is near on Impossible. I hope that moving forward, this twat hasn't caused any repercussions for any other streamers/making of videos. On a positive note Chris. Did you know that regular beer in Japan is going down 6 yen per 350ml? You take care 🫶 🏔️🇯🇵

Amanda Hayward

This is an excellent topic to discuss for sure. I hope to see more of your opinions on other issues!

Regina Rossi

Well said!! I returned from Japan two days ago and the people there were so welcoming and friendly. I took 18 high school students and they soon understand cultural expectations. And I was proud of them acknowledging them and upholding them. (Eg quiet on trains)

Sophie Bain

I’ve noticed a lot of “no streaming” signs popping up as well as an increase in “no photo, no video” signs. It makes it harder for genuine tourist to document their travels as well as creators who earn a living showing people around the place they live. Hopefully the Somali incident deters more of these types of people from doing the same thing instead of encouraging them so they can become “famous” like Logan Paul.

BlueSkyeDays

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the situation Chris. Despite the fact he did get a lot of attention, I'm hoping said attention will indeed have the necessary punishment exacted upon him and he never gets the chance to spout his vitriol again.

ZaikXory

Sorry you might have missed my point (or I explained myself poorly) it’s not the size of the audience it’s the quality of the content. I’m not the arbiter of taste level by any means and people have to start somewhere…..but tripping people up at the exit gate of Harajuku station while screaming at your three followers on your live stream…..

Bergkattse

It really is becoming tiresome of these idiots making a mockery of being a streamer/vlogger/youtuber by doing stupid things to grab attention. There was one in London not too long ago, he would even just walk into random homes and film it- all for attention. Unfortunately it’s like naughty children, they misbehave and get the attention. We can only hope countries start with firmer punishments as deterrents, and that the public learn that imbeciles causing chaos isn’t entertainment (though I doubt that!). A similar thing is being British in Europe, especially Spain. I can speak Spanish, and when they learn that I’m English they’re shocked- they seem to think we are all drunk degenerates causing chaos in magaluf or benidorm. Keep doing what you’re doing, you have gotten success because we love your content- you entertain and educate and put out better produced content than mainstream tv. I’m sure the Japanese love you and appreciate that you show the beauty and your love of their country. (Sorry for the essay!)

Hayley Khan

That’s a pretty obnoxious point of view. It shouldn’t matter if the streamer or content creator was big or small, they all have the same rights to film and all need to be considerate of their surroundings.

BlueSkyeDays

Thanks for your input all this Japan situation. Love your content Chris!

Fluffyspark7

I don't want to taint the comment section with vulgarity but I am beyond angry right now, I didn't know about Johnny Somali guy, I thought people would learn from Logan Paul's incident but apparently it inspired others to follow him instead of avoiding doing things like he did. For people like that, i say Public execution is the only solution then they will learn

Ali Fareed MC

I was in Harajuku last Sunday for the first time since 2018 and apart from it being so horrifically crowded, a Japanese friend of mine had a panic attack (he grew up in Ōmiya, it’s not like he’s a country bumpkin), it was the knobends with their cameras on wee tripods halting the flow of traffic, shouting about how crowded Harajuku is. Yeah it’s crowded because of low rent streamers. We can see the high quality of work, yourself, Sharla, Conner et al put into your videos. It’s on a whole different level from the rest of the dross. Perhaps we need to coin a new term for YouTube documentarians over shouty Ruby Rhod’s of the internet. Now I’m off for my first earthquake drill at work!

Bergkattse

Chris, I always appreciate your honesty and transparency. You speak towards some difficult situations and it is needed! One person's behavior doesn't speak for the masses and more so it is not the brand the majority represent!

Tim

They've finally got him! Jesus Christ, I've seen nothing but absolute atrocities being committed by this guy in Japan. He's been doing the same thing to other South-East Asian countries too. I genuinely hope he gets more than a slap on the wrist and isn't allowed back in the country.

Moe R

Johnny Somali's arrest wasn't particularly satisfying to me. The whole time he was in Japan it seems like his goal was to get arrested, with every attention-grabbing move bringing him closer to that final move which would rocket him to mainstream headlines. In earlier clips of him getting punched etc., he just seems to brush it off with the satisfaction knowing that his stream will be shared further, and even when getting arrested he's smiling, laughing, and cracking jokes. He's one of the most talked-about streamers now, and when he gets deported and back online, everyone will be tuning in to hear his detention story and find out what ridiculous antics he has planned next. He won!

Harry Bonyari

When I lived in Japan, my father was in the Air Force but at the time (late 80s) the marines were terrorizing Okinawa. Everywhere I went I had to hear about it and answer questions as if I had anything to do with it. I sympathize. It does not get easier.

Keith Maxon

Such a shame that a few individuals can ruin things for so many others. Sorry you're impacted by this idiot but fingers crossed there's no lasting impact.

Ilyas

It’s good to have these open discussions about things that perhaps aren’t as fun, but are truly impactful. I’m hopeful that most Japanese people will see that this isn’t all foreigners, just some attention seeking immature people.
