Hope you've had an amazing start to July so far!
But for the love of god, I hope none of you are coming to Japan this summer - this heat is an absolute joke. Every time I step outside I feel like I'm being bloody flame grilled 😅
Got a really fun new video up today though to kick off the summer!
You may recall a few years back I did a documentary on Kyoto's disappearing townhouses which are sadly dying out. I interviewed a friendly local entrepreneur called Koji Maeda and he told us about how and why he'd decided to renovate decrepit, crumbling homes across the city.
In this follow up, we examine WHY people aren't choosing to renovate these old townhouses. A stone we alluded to, but mostly left unturned in the previous outing.

Chris, I could probably Google this, but what were Machiya called before modern times? Like what was the style referred to as in the 1800s and prior? If anything other than just "that kind of building we all make". Since Machiya is "traditional wooden house", I thought there would be a contemporary word for them then.

2023-07-04 18:10:34 +0000 UTCWell, i'm going to Japan this weekend. But I'm going to spend almost all the time in Hokkaido. I usually go on vacation in autumn, but this year it ended up being summer. So I thought i'd be a good opportunity to go to Hokkaido, since it's the only place with comfortable temperatures in Japan in summer, and in autumn it's already too cold for comfort.
