I've Secretly Been Shooting a Documentary | PLUS: How NOT to Eat Out in Japan 🍿 Patreon Exclusive Video

Hey guys,

What a month it's been so far! I've faced the daunting task of trying to find a new studio space in Tokyo and it's been bloody difficult. But we may finally have a winner. Later in the week I'll be taking a look around and if we get it, the location will be fantastic. Keep your fingers crossed and I'll keep you posted!

Before I get into what else we've been up to, last week we had an Abroad in Japan episode on eating out on a budget.

Good god, don't ever try and film 12 foods/restaurants back to back. It was the most painful shoot since the Wankosoba noodle challenge.

But given how intense the shoot was lots of things went wrong and there's some amusing (and bloody humiliating) outtakes and bloopers to tuck into here on Patreon. Check it out below!

In between looking for a new studio, I've spent the last four days filming our first documentary of the year (and far from the last). It's the story of how a traditional inn here in Tohoku went from the bleak situation of facing bankruptcy, to turning it around in the space of 6 years and becoming one of the most highly ranked Ryokan Inns in all of north Japan.

It's an inspirational story and a real lesson in entrepreneurship that I think will be a fantastic episode - it certainly helps that the ryokan itself is absolutely stunning and has quite a few quirks that I'd never encountered before. But while I was filming the inn out in the mountains of Yamagata, by a stroke of good luck it happened to be cherry blossom season.

So when I had a spare hour while shooting the documentary, I popped off the town park and shot this video, trying to showcase the beauty of Hanami (flower viewing). It was a real joy to film! (So much so I shot it in 8k).

Finally today, Natsuki and I wrapped filming a scene for the opening of Journey Across Japan, in a similar vein to Natsuki's epic yakuza showdown at the start of last year's series.

It was completely over the top but I think it'll make the most entertaining start to a JAJ series yet. (As seen below).

But before JAJ drops, our next video is the Kyoto Bar video! (Also featuring Natsuki). The video is one big love letter to Kyoto and one great big lesson on how to not to be a bartender.

I'll swing by with a preview of JAJ and the Kyoto bar in the next few days, but for now guys enjoy the two videos above and have a great start to the week!

Sorry Joseph, 8MBps was supposed to be 80 🤦‍♂️ and I agree there is Absolutely value in shooting above 4k, even in 8k if for crop or zoom reasons, but _uploading_ at that probably won't do much (if anything) for above 90% of viewers and probably won't improve the content, but it will take 2-4x as much space on SD cards as 4k, so there is a downside, having said that v60 SD cards can be got for fairly cheap and considering how many Patreon subs there are I doubt that would be an issue 😅 Of course uploading in 4K is almost 'necessary' these days, and fairly easy when considering the level/ low cost of today's technology. If anything though, shooting in 8K might reduce the framerate and (IMHO) shooting in 60fps will likely yeald better results than 30fps - again depending on content. By that, I mean I don't know if the kit Chris has can shoot in 8K at 60fps and allow enough light in (assuming there are some inside shots, though also I don't have experience witht the black magic cameras).

Eric

@Nope, Wait, I said that they ended the paywall for 4K. Oh, typo, I wrote "the ended it" intead of "they ended it". Shooting uncompressed is (probably) worth it for the type of outdoor/ high quality content Chris will likely be shooting (as opposed to indoor/studio), and I think on the black magic would handle that no problem, though I can't remember his exact camera setup. The 8 was supposed to be *80*, as that's roughly the recommend for high frame rate 4K, and up to 300Mbps for 8K, so my mistake there, apologies! 🤦‍♂️ That was also the encoded bitrate for VP9, not recorded on the camera, sorry for any misunderstanding.

Eric

I'm a professional software engineer and have worked in video processing in the context of online content distribution. There are a few issues here: - Shooting at above 4K is likely pointless unless cropping is needed, agreed. - Paid-only 4K on YouTube was a temporary experiment that has long ended. If you open one of Chris's videos in an Incognito tab, 4K is available. - (Opinion) Perhaps 4K has a small share of watchtime but people with 4K devices will essentially by definition also have money, which makes them more valuable, be it as advertiser impressions or Patrons. - Shooting 444 or as close to uncompressed as possible isn't necessary for all creators. It's important when you intend to manipulate colours in post production, e.g. for colour grading, increasing brightness or maybe denoising, but it's not needed in all cases. If, for example, the content is just going to be cut and spliced together, more "normal" settings are just fine and will result in smaller files to edit. - "8Mbps" as a general recommendation is utter nonsense. The bitrate necessary to obtain a given quality is dependent on the encoder. Out of the camera, you want the bitrate to be as high as possible because the hardware encoders found in cameras typically have garbage compression, so high bitrate is needed to preserve high quality. When uploading to YouTube or another streaming platform, you want the bitrate to be high enough that there is no perceivable quality loss in the encode. That will depend on the software you're using and the exact encode settings. A general recommendation doesn't make sense. Yes, YouTube will transcode the video to a lower bitrate but that doesn't mean it's pointless to upload a bitrate higher than YouTube's. If your encode has visible flaws at 8Mbps but they go away at 16Mbps and you upload both versions to YouTube, you will see that even though YouTube transcodes both videos to similar final bitrates, the video from the 16Mbps source will be noticeably better. - I agree DaVinci Resolve is pretty good. The free version is fantastic value, as is the paid version.

Nope

So full disclaimer - I'm more of a photographer and tech enthusiast over a video videographer. But I'm not sure all your statements make sense.... resolution, dynamic range/HDR and compression are completely different things. There is definitely value in shooting in 4k and above. 1080p is common on YouTube now, but 10 years ago, 4k barely existed. Who knows what the Internet will be like in the next 10 years? An 8k output likely gives minimal visual improvement, but gives you editing freedom. After that, an uncompressed 4k 10 bit stream is going to be huge. Way more that 8mbps. But certainly gives you the most visual fidelity. I also believe compression has little to do with HDR - in fact, most HDR content in the form of bluray is compressed. HDR has more to do with the sensor and shooting profile (usually a log mode I believe) and compatible output display. As a general rule, your masters should be thr highest quality possible and output something reasonable right at the end. In practice, it will likely be a 1080p/4k compressed (4:2:0) HDR. Sorry for block of text, I don't know how to make paragraphs in patreon!

I love you're videos keep it up man you're one of the people i still watch after i all ready went to japan i love the content.

TL;DR There's no _real_ need for anything above 4K on YouTube... ---------- Heya Chris, are you aware that YouTube started charging for 4K quality and above, the it ended that, but no one really uses it, if you look at the stats for YT it's probably less than 15% of people watch it in 4K (most on their phones or laptops) and basically no one can _actually_ watch it in 8K. Edit: "they" ended it - as in YouTube ended the paywall. I've studied film and I genuinely hope this info is of use; but **shooting in 8K won't be _technically_ any better than shooting in 4K**, with the exception of you being able to crop it a lot. But also, editing in 8K will probably be an absolute nightmare because of file size, and I wouldn't recommend it. Instead make sure you're filming in 10bit / 4:4:4, basically RAW/ uncompressed to have HDR, or even shoot in triple framrate and use exposure metering, I have the GH5 MkII and will be shooting some cherry trees in the UK next week and I'll upload a video to show the difference between 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 (also knows as 4:4:4:4 by Apple as the last 4 represents alpha) Bit rate should be 8Mbps, but higher for above 4K is a good idea. *Edit; that's supposed to say 80Mbps!* It's basically all about this; https://www.displayninja.com/chroma-subsampling/ Here's some info and other stats From Google; https://www.thinkwithgoogle.com/data-collections/youtube-stats-video-consumption-trends/ I might not 'need' to say it, but I will anyway, lol I'm not trying to tutor anyone or tell anyone how to do shit, at all, I'm just sharing what I've learned, and from conversations (and experiments) with someone who runs an actual, professional video production compnay, my brother in law is the owner and has said he's even learnt technical stuff from me (even though I've not been in the industry for several years - but I'm still a tech nerd 😅) ( P.S. have you tried DaVinci Resolve/ Studio? it's a dream and something I thought might be great for you Chris, **multiple people can edit at once!** and this is coming from someone who's been using Premiere Pro and Final Cut since, about Final Cut 6 😳 oof, now I feel old.. but I tried DaVinci recently and it's really good, especially for colouring and there's a whole audio mixing panel.)
