JOURNEY Across Japan | EPISODE 5: 1,000km for Dr Jelly in Nagasaki! 🏝️ (Patreon Exclusive)

So guys after 1,000km and five of the most intense videos we’ve ever seen on Abroad in Japan, Journey Across Japan: The Lost Islands is finally over.

A HUGE thank you to all of you for supporting this crazy series. We’re so damn lucky that we didn’t need to shove tons of sponsors in the series, or sacrifice creative integrity along the way as a 100% Patreon backed series backed by the very viewers who enjoy what we do.

This was 100% raw Abroad in Japan all the way and with that creative freedom, I truly believe we pulled off one heck of a series. From producing a song that reached no.14 on the worldwide iTunes singles chart and flying over Japan’s most active volcano, to discovering Japan’s largest abandoned island (Ikeshima), and throwing Natsuki in a waterfall.

There’s been some truly incredible moments over the last five episodes.

I’m keen to hear what YOUR highlight was from the series! I’d love to do another series sometime in the near future, so please do let me know in the comments below what you enjoyed the most and I look forward to reading through over my morning coffee tomorrow! (And plagiarising your ideas for future videos).

BUT THE MAYHEM IS NOT OVER YET.
- There’s still one more final Patreon Exclusive behind the scenes episode to go!

This week in our Nagasaki finale, I explain why filming Dr Jelly this time around was a real nightmare, and how I inadvertently got caught up in a political tug of war off camera because of Gunkanjima’s dark history.

JAJ3: Patreon Exclusive | Episode 5 - Dr Jelly in Nagasaki!
🎤 Watch: https://youtu.be/-u_G25aJK30

ALSO this weekend we’ll be releasing one big MEGA video with every single one of the five Journey Across Japan Patreon Episodes, compiled into one easy to navigate video, so you can enjoy them back to back! Hopefully this means less time clicking and searching and more time watching.

FINALLY as I mentioned in a previous post, because we’ve received such overwhelmingly positive feedback from you guys about this behind the scenes series, it’s now officially going to become a staple of all Abroad in Japan episodes going forward.

With each release there’ll be a bonus video right here on Patreon featuring bloopers, outtakes and making of commentary out with each episode (starting off with the train video later this week).

That’s all for now folks - Natsuki and I will be back over the weekend for our sleeper train adventure to Japan’s mini desert. I think you’re going to be blown away by the train and the Tottori sand dunes. (Heck, I know I was).

Looking forward to taking you along for the ride once more. Honestly, it almost feels like an epilogue to JAJ!

And again, a massive thank you for making this journey possible. (And for giving Natsuki a much needed and rather eccentric holiday. The first week off he's had since 2017).
Chris

JOURNEY Across Japan | EPISODE 5: 1,000km for Dr Jelly in Nagasaki! 🏝️ (Patreon Exclusive)

Comments

Dr Jelly commercial in a Love Hotel Chris? Dr. Love Jelly??!! Now that could be interesting! Third series of Journey Across Japan was immense. Thoroughly enjoyed it. What amazing places that you showed to us all that perhaps most people would never had heard of. Brilliant and I can't wait to see even more content. Congrats on the Studio as well. Exciting times lie ahead!

is there a "hiking adventure" in japan for a Journey Across japan, that would be interesting to see?

It was another fun filled adventure! I personally enjoyed the last episode in Nagasaki. I’ve always been interested in that part of the country but haven’t made it down that way. Perhaps in the future! For the future, I think Shikoku is an obvious choice. I’ve never been but I suspect there are lots of hidden gems waiting to be shown. But I’d actually be interested in seeing Journey Across Japan: Straight Up The Middle. The interior of the country is routinely overlooked. I think you could start in Gifu and Nagoya, then to Nagano, and a couple stops ending in Yamagata (ever been to the Yamadera temple?). I’m sure whatever you chose, it will be full of exciting things to see. BTW, is “Bar, Isn’t It?” still open in Sendai?

Anthony

Absolutely fun episode to have. I do hope this is not the last we see of Doctor Jelly. Looking forward to your next season of JAJ.

Rynnik Elddi

Thank you so much for the amazing content, Chris! The highlight for me was definitely the flight over Sakurajima and ASO too much volcano xDDD. What a journey!

This round of JAJ was an absolute blast. Loving the behind the scenes bits. I’m sure it’s incredibly hard to keep a straight face while filming Dr Jelly! I couldn’t do it, if I were in your shoes, so kudos to all of you for making it happen! 😆 Speaking of Dr Jelly, I think you and Joey have great chemistry on camera and I hope he returns for another JAJ in the future! As far as location I’d have to say Ikeshima was my favorite. I’d love to explore that place! I bet Natsuki enjoyed his holiday adventures. Hopefully he’ll be able to escape work again next time! 😃

Laura Beaumont

Congratulations Chris and team! Awesome series, looking forward for more in the future!!

Cesar S.

Mega video is great. I was downloading them to my YouTube player for a flight as single video would have been nice. Maybe include deleted scenes like a DVD. Looking forward to your next videos, like island adventures or camping across japan.

bren

cheers Chris for another great JAJ series! favourite part was Natsuki featuring in the Dr, Jelly commercial - his theatrics were on point! I can't wait to see more from you and that new studio!

harupi

Excellent job Chris natsuki and Joey! Love this series to death 😘

Thank you for another amazing season of Journey Across Japan! This was definitely the best one yet with how many crazy events you guys packed in! I think the highlight for me was the first episode in Yakushima and the final episode in Nagasaki. Neither place I've seen much or at all of, so it was good to finally get to experience it through you guys. Plus, pushing Natsuki was hilarious... and the Chinatown of Nagasaki was beautiful. I'm glad you want to continue JAJ, it's probably the best travel series on Japan that's somehow free! If you're looking for suggestions, definitely keep up the whacky adventure feeling you have had. Also, it'd be great if you brought back some of the guests from the first season (Ryotaro, Emma, Sharla) if they're willing! I remember you made a (joking?) remark about a remake, so seeing you back on the cycle would also be fun! :P

H J

Thanks so much for JAJ 3! I had a lot of fun watching the videos! My highlights were Ikeshima, which I think was absolutely stunning and beautiful and also Nagasaki. I kind of want to include these places on my next trip to Japan now, but I am definitely waiting for the Shinkansen to go to Nagasaki, since I really do not want to go there in a car :D. Also can I just say: Ian with the curlers in his hair studying the menu from the karaoke room looked absolutely hilarious :D.

Honestly the rap video, the abandoned island, the Dutch amusement park, and tossing Natsuki in the waterfall were my favorite bits. I guess I'd like to see more videos about exploring different parts of Japan...like places tourists don't know about. Off in the countryside. I think some of your best videos are when you find weird/cool places I've never heard about out in the middle of nowhere. Other then that...more temples/shrines please! I love looking at them...they're so beautiful. On a more serious note, I don't think people should pressure Youtubers/entertainers into doing things that are political. You provide entertainment, you're not a political person or a news person...so why does it make sense for you to do something like that? It really doesn't. People need to separate Youtubers/entertainers from journalists/people who report the news. There's a serious difference and for some reason people don't seem to get that?

Astor Reinhardt

The volcano flight was definitely one of my favorite things on these series, such a unique view and experience!! But I also loved when you showed us the forest that inspired Princess Mononoke's backgrounds, I'm a Ghibli fan so that really blew my mind and now I need to visit that ancient forest someday! Thanks so much for creating such amazing content Chris, I'm always happy to see a notification of yours <3

Dr Jelly in a love hotel what type of jelly is that wink wink

Thomas

Yea, the only person in the picture having something that has the right to be called a hairdress has "bad hair" and needs to visit a barber shop :)

Marcus Budde

Another fantastic series Chris! Like a magic!

Jamie

Awesome series, always takes my mind off things during the pandemic and a taste of Japan that I crave. There are so many fun moments to choose my favourite from but I'll say that for me the top two would be the masterpiece of a rap song you guys created, and your effort to find places off the beaten track, like Ikeshima. And of course it's awesome to see you guys enjoy yourselves along the way.

Patrick

I still can't believe you had to omit Natsuki's line where he says "fucking walking". Would've been a fan favorite 😤. For the next JAJ, you could look for some of the lesser known theme parks (abandoned as well!) and have it culminate in Huis Ten Bosch! But whatever the next series will be, I'll be waiting with excitement!

Austin B.

Another stunningly shot and entertaining series of videos! I loved it all, but the highlights were the volcano flight and silly, competitive moments like squeezing through the tiny torii gate. +1 to a previous suggestion above to do a spooky/haunted JAJ series exploring abandoned or ghostly locations. Perhaps in time for Halloween? I’d love to see a Hokkaido-centric JAJ too. Since you’ve already climbed Mt Fuji, why not climb Asahi-dake or Mt Yotei?

Reading through all those comments makes me feel very moved by what a lovely and supportive community you have here. So I do hope you're weeping into your morning coffee! As for ideas I would just say, ditto to what everyone else said. But I did want to say this - Watching this series over many weeks it has struck me, along with others, what an excellent series it is, for all the aforementioned reasons. And then I remember it was shot in a fucking week, which blows my mind. Each episode being a day does not seem even vaguely plausible. A TV travel show would take a week to shoot each episode, and they wouldn't be better. You should be immensely proud. Seriously you can walk around like an arrogant prick for the next week, you've definitely earned it. I wait with bated breath to see what your next miracle will be and am thrilled that I get to contribute through patreon in some small way. Many, many thanks.

Niamh

Thanks for the fun! Everything was amazing and i hope to see more in the future!

Xanne

Dr Jelly in a love Hotel??? Dr KY Jelly more like it lol

C

Amazing job and so much fun! I really enjoyed the behind the scenes videos. I don't know if you still have the footage, but I would love to see a behind the scenes video of the Hokkaido road trip with Pete.

Dara

I am a paranormal investigator and so for me I would love to learn about any legends on ghostly Japan. Would also like to see festivals and fairs held in Japan. Thanks Chris

Carissa

It was a fabulous ride! Im so glad you got over your drone-phobia. Those were some sick aerial shots you highlighted.

Patti Schneider

"A-S-O. Too much volcano." Too much volcano? Too much fun, education and entertainment more like! Another brilliant series, thank you so much for the amazing quality content that you continue to create and produce. It always makes the anticipation for the next video that much more exciting and a real joy when that notification bell rings to announce the next video being released! Besides flying over an active volcano and making a rap song, the main highlight for me was the Huis Ten Bosch and Ikeshima episode where you put both places in the same video. I loved the strikingly contrasting tones and feel of each location. It kind of highlights just how diverse and varied the different places in Japan can be. Regarding future ideas, here are some of my thoughts and suggestions: - Hakone You've mentioned Hakone before such as on the Abroad in Japan podcast, talking about places like Lake Ashi and Owakudani. I visited Hakone during my last trip to Japan and I loved it. It would be interesting to see your take and perspective of Hakone? Old Tokaido Road: Ever thought about traversing the full Old Tokaido Road route? I could see this having the potential to be another full fledged Journey Across Japan series. Given the significance between the route and the Edo period, you could also incorporate some sort of samurai or period related theme across the whole journey, activities and Anpanman challenges! -Shizuoka Makinohara: Would you be interested in covering the green tea fields and processing plants here? You could rope one or two people to go tea leaf picking with you! -Okinawa Scuba diving with whale sharks -Dr Jelly Any chance we'll see a Dr Jelly origin story?

Absolutely awesome series!! Loved watching and looked forward to each episode eagerly. The scenery was incredible! What a flair you have with cinematography!! The behind the scenes Patreon videos are my favorite. !!! Just so fun to watch. Keep making great content!!! Can’t wait for the abroad lair!!!

Carissa

Thanks for all the fun!! I was surprised that Natsuki is a great actor!😆

Satomi Arihara

Fun series to watch. I enjoyed the waterfall, cessna, Too Much Volcano (of course), seeing the Dutch land, exploring Nagasaki and Dr Jelly. Your videos are very enjoyable to watch. I would like to see more of the journey in journey across Japan. What happens in between locations (is it just boring driving? maybe show scenery along the way.)? Even if it is throwing in some time lapse driving. Up to you whether to include it as part of patreon or the official video. Thanks!!

Tom W

Ditto. Everyone above said it better than I. Re Dr Jelly spot You did better than you think apparently. Your location and shooting certainly portrayed a cramped salon, and background noise would be on point for sure. It was great. You and Joey killed it as usual Natsuki stole the show with his method acting and I love Ian in curlers and Norms oh heck no entry. 🤣😂🤣. It’s perfectly executed! The next jelly idea that came to mind was due to your mention of love hotels. Lol. But that’s too cheeky I’m sure. Connor would have to be in that one 😏 So maybe shower gel can be a jelly? I was rewatching old videos waiting for this weeks episode and you said, repeatedly, in one that you didn’t think you were a very good presenter. I think you’re dead wrong on that. Do you have goofy or awkward moments? Yes. That’s endearing and very on par with any famous adventurous presenter out there. Please believe me, you are better than you think! Keep up the good work!

WT

Awesome series! Any chance of a Tsushima adventure? I'm sure the video would do well!

Matticus

This was an amazing series. The quality is so good. During the series I commented about Great narration, Great nature porn, Great background music choices, Great shots and Great content. At least. Every episode had so many awesome things. I am so proud of you too, Chris. I started following you about a year ago and even in such a short time period you have leveled up so much. I had such a shitty week and seeing this last episode was the first thing that made me laugh in days. Behind the Scenes gave me another short escape from reality. The value of that can't be measured. I am glad to be a Patreon. ❤️

This is by far my favorite JAJ. The cinematography is beautiful, the locations especially the abandon locations are impressive, and the chemistry between you, Joey, and Natsuki comes across the screen beautifully. You can’t recreate true friendships. But, you know what I like the most, is how intimate this series felt. By having a small cast and crew, I felt really more immerse in the experiences, emotions, and perspectives. I hope that makes sense. Regarding ideas for the next JAJ, we know how efficient trains are in Japan? Can this be utilize? You can explain the train type, the route being taken, and final destination. There you can do the everyday challenges submitted the viewers and share some of the locations. I think it can make a great series and will be educational as well especially for a foreigner like myself.

Mercedes Mezzasalma

Hi Chris, i cant quite believe the quality of your film making now. The level of detail the combination of different camera angles, drone footage, music and top quality voice over work is amazing. I really am looking forward to you making a short film, if your recent work is anything to go by it will truly be amazing. The quality of the videos is something that i would expect to see on other places and not on YouTube. I cant wait to see what you will be doing in the next few years. I would love yo know how you have gotten so much better at doing your voice overs. I have recently being watching all of your videos again (from the very beginning) and things have changes so much. looking forward to the next live stream i have lots of questions.

Wayne Grover

Yeah, so when is "Too Much Volcano" going to be available in Japan's karaoke bars? :)

Steve Liu

definitely think the walking journey has massive potential, things like the 88 temple shikoku pilgrimage could be useful to investigate. I want to see a Chris Broad x Death Stranding walking simulator

I still don't understand what happened to Natsuki's pants lol! How did they come off so fast and disappear?!

Perri

Such a great series! It has definitely added many more places to my Japan bucket list, especially Nagasaki. Cannot wait for your next adventure! Maybe one day you could do a journey from Hokkaido all the way down to Okinawa 😄

Anna D

Congratulations on wrapping up the season, I am excited that the journey will go on! There were so many highlights, each episode had something special, but Too much volcano is my favourite. It had beautiful cinematography and you can't get the song out of your head. Loved all the abandoned places, it would be great to discover more of these in future videos. You travelled through Japan first on the bike, then a car, now also a plane and a horse, next time maybe you could take a boat? Sailing along Japan's coast and try to find Natsuki a new pair of pirate pants. Whatever you decide, it will surely be amazing!

Eszter Nagy

Great series Chris! Always enjoy all your videos. Keep it up!!! My best to you and the crew of JAJ!!!

Michael P.

Always superb content dude, you never disappoint. In terms of things I'd like to see in future videos, I think finally getting Garnt in on the action sometime and/or bringing in Pete some more would be awesome, I think your banter with your guests is great and you're really good at playing off their personalities (usually with your cynicism lol).

"I had a good week of diarrhea" *Zuiikin English PTSD intensifies* LOL

Chadin

Success! Another challenge completed! A hit song, a funny commercial, well done guys, you're awesome.

Helene Sirois

You smashed the series out of the park Chris! Highlights have to be Ikeshima, Too Much Volcano and all of Natsuki's one liners out of nowhere I'd be really interested to know what your diet was like on this trip, whether you were able to sample the Kyushu delicacies or if you reverted back to JAJ1 Family Mart fried chicken everyday life (although Natsuki probably would've complained without end if the Sapporo trip is anything to go by)

My cancelled trip was supposed to be Kyushu based, so thanks for letting me live vicariously through you three!

These videos are a treat! Can't get enough of them. Thank you! And, the whole series was incredible. Job very well done! I'm glad that Natsuki got his holiday.

Susan Ray

OK the best part just happened right now when I heard that the journey probably goes on. It's just awesome what you guys are doing in front and behind camera. Love it <3

Kevin Bischoff

Thanks! I enjoyed the series. Do you have enough footage of Natsuki on Ikeshima to put together a post-apocalyptic short film? Maybe make it similar to 28 Days Later where Natsuki wakes up then goes outside and that's when it's Ikeshima.

Tom W

Awsome been waiting for this eagerly. Aome great part of this series. The level of banter between the 3 of you is always a highlight. Whilst i couldnt stand the level of cringe that was the too much volacano music video i commend you guys on it doing so well. Gotta say seeing you and joey in the little aircraft flying of the volcano was a special moment. Cant wait for the next video thanks chris and the abroad in japan team for allowing me to live vicariously through you all

Stefan Ford

What a great job ! Thanks guys! 😎👍

Dinkum Aussie

Ikeshima was definitely a highlight! Seeing how areas are changing as younger folks presumably see no future for them in areas like that is, whilst sad, also eye-opening as to how rural life vs. city life differs in Japan. Stellar production values through the whole series, really a credit to both the planning and post-production.

Thank you for the excellent videos Chris and gang!! I hope Natsuki had a great time during this holiday!

Peter Varga

Amazing job on the series Chris! Honestly my favorite part is just the banter between you three ("your hair is shit"), I hope that for the next series we can have Natsuki stay for the entire trip.

Excellent job on the videos Chris! My favorite moment would have to be your commentary right before taking off with the Cessna, that was gold haha.

DinoKōyō

An amazing series, the production quality is always incredible but it's just felt like it's gone up a notch this time round! "Always f*cking place" has a special place in my heart, and I'll never forget the fear in your eyes when you saw that horse... Thanks for the laughs!

hanny

Looking forward to whatever comes next. The very first JAJ holds a special place in my heart because I was in Japan at the same time you did the cycle and whenever I came back to my hotel after a long day, I was looking forward to an episode and there was always one ready. This JAJ3 was an amazing series from start to finish. The cinematography, the drone shots, the locations you chose, the challenges - they were all fantastic and the best of any JAJ to date. I think I liked the Mount Aso episode the most. It truly looked like something from another planet and the song was probably the best challenge ever on a JAJ. Creating a song and a video in under a day and it coming out to be that good was just truly fantastic.

VanillaCoke1956 .

Congratulations on another successful series Chris

SarumanTheStinky

I loved every second of it, but you guys exploring Ikeshima was definitely one of the most amazing parts to see! And of course the long awaited return of Dr Jelly featuring Natsuki :) Congrats on an excellent series once again and keep up the good work!

Joey B

Excellent job, Chris! I cannot get "Too Much Volcano" out of my head! I look forward to all of your videos, not just JAJ, and can't wait to see what you release next. Side note, the Zuiikin' English episode is probably my favorite, although not part of Journey Across Japan. :)

It's amazing to see you visit Nagasaki! I lived there for a year during my study exchange and it's crazy to see you in places that I also went to like Chinatown or Peace Park. I cannot wait to see your next adventure!

Milena

Best series so far, I looked forward to watching the episodes after work each week! "always f*cking place" is my new work catchphrase.

It's crazy how much good content (I know you don't like that term but oh well) you are providing to patreon folks. And now there will be BTS videos for each video. Not gonna lie, makes me feel as if I'm stealing something.

Valerij Romel

My favorites are always the abandoned places. I'm so excited you've decided to do another series in the future, and I'm excited for more behind the scenes! Thanks for another amazing series, and have a great weekend!

Lady Long Limbs

Was looking forward to this video very much. Keep up the good work, Chris. Can't wait for the next JAJ Series 👍🏼

Rohit Mehta

Congratulations on a series well done!
