The Stupidest Thing I've Probably Ever Done in Japan Happened This Week

A few days ago - here on Patreon - I shared my experience of the recent gigantic earthquake with you all.

What I failed to tell you was that I was already having a bad day, because that fateful afternoon, for the first time ever in 14 years of driving, I RAN OUT OF FUEL. And not just anywhere. I was in the absolute middle of nowhere in the mountains of Hokkaido.

What an absolute moron.

Rather than recant the story here in text, you can laugh at my expense and hear me describe the nightmare - and how I got out of it all - on this week’s Abroad in Japan Podcast episode.

To be fair, incredible stress aside, it was utterly ridiculous and undeniably amusing.

This week also marks the 3 YEAR milestone of the Abroad in Japan Podcast, with Pete and I now having recorded 190 episodes and NEVER missing a single week in those 3 years.

It's surreal for me, as I was reluctant to do the Podcast for many years (in the same way I sneered at the idea of buying a drone originally), but Pete persuaded me that we could pull it off without it getting in the way of the Abroad in Japan channel.

And being able to record while travelling on the go around Japan has made that possible over the years.

But we have a fantastic backlog of episodes and interviews, all of which you can find here, with new episodes every SUNDAY & WEDNESDAY!

ALSO this weekend on Saturday to celebrate hitting 2m subscribers, 3 years of the Podcast and surviving my road trip despite running out of fuel, I’ll be holding the first LIVE show of the year on the Abroad Perspective channel.

I’ll post the link on here tomorrow morning, but it’ll be held at 22:00 JST and likely last 90 minutes. I hope you can make it!

Have yourself a great Friday!
Chris

P.S. Here’s a sneak peek of the upcoming Kyoto episode which is out in the next few days.

Wooo, can‘t wait 😃! Noob question, but: Can someone explain the difference between a live stream and a live show to me?

Ouranor

Bloody hell... has it already been 190 episodes of the podcast!? I've listened to all of them since starting them last summer while in quarantine at home, but I didn't think they were nearly 200. Holy shit. Congrats on all the achievements Chris; including running out of fuel in the worst possible moment - almost got that Darwin Award too. Stay safe! Looking forward to the Kyoto video :D

I don't think Chris could've survived such an experience. Would've gone raving mad and thrown himself off the nearest cliff.

Congratulations on hitting 2 million subs and 3 years of the podcast Chris. Could have been worse though. Imagine running out of fuel with Ryotoro in the passenger seat and in charge of the in car music!

I think that might be the old fashioned Starbucks on the photos

Woohoo! Live show! Congrats on both milestones, richly deserved

Happy 3 year anniversary and congratulations on 2 million subscribers!! 🎉

Bro, I was literally just watching Sharla's travel vlogs from when you guys drove around Aomori Prefecture, and as soon as I finish the last one, the notification for this post comes up, lol. The power of Synchronicity. 😳 Congrats on those 2mil subs and that podcast milestone, Chris. You absolutely deserve it, man, with all the effort you put into everything. 🙌🏆

I CHOOSE OPTION THREE!!! Stay in a warm, cozy earthquake proof home eating pizza like a coward! Adventure is overrated man!😅 Seriously your last trips do read like an adventure, sometimes funny, sometimes epic, sometimes scary, always interesting😊 But it’s because we care that we worry Chris🙂

WOULD YOU RATHER experience an earthquake from a 12th storey or RUN out of fuel in the middle of nowhere? CHOOSE your own adventure!

Abroad in Japan

I still have to listen to the podcast but you running out of fuel, in winter Hokkaido, in the middle of f*ck*ng nowhere is not what I would consider funny in the least😰 Still if between that and living through an earthquake on a 12th floor nothing major happened to you, congratulations! You just moved to I am immortal status. Ryotoro do your worst, nothing can stop Chris!😅 Will not miss the next live show and I can’t wait for the Kyoto episode. I have been hyping it in my mind since you first told us you went there😊 Anyway... For the love of karagee chicken and everything holy PLEASE STAY SAFE CHRIS!!!!
