The Worst Earthquake I've Ever Experienced Happened Last Night

So last night I was tucked up in a hotel bed on my way back from Hokkaido, falling asleep while pondering how to make the world a better place, when all of a sudden I began to feel dizzy.

I suddenly realised the entire building was moving and given I was on the 12th floor, rather than violent shaking the sensation you typically experience during an earthquake, it was more akin to ominous swaying.

Usually an earthquake lasts 10-15 seconds, but this time after 30 seconds of progressively more shaking and swaying I was starting to panic. Particularly as I remembered Natsuki’s prophecy of a large earthquake in the coming years that’d rival March 2011.

Fortunately, as I threw on my clothes and stood in the door way, the swaying gradually came to an end, with the sound of creaking and banging replaced with my phone vibrating, as it lit up amongst a sea of messages from friends dotted across Japan. Soon scary footage of people capturing their homes falling apart began to spread (https://twitter.com/himei42/status/1360595666775379971?s=20).

And while luckily, Natsuki’s prophecy of a world ending earthquake hadn’t come true, the earthquake was still a rather frightening magnitude 7.1, just off the coast of Miyagi prefecture.

In fact, rather creepily if you look at the epicentre, by a weird twist of fate, the closest spot in Japan to where it occurred is exactly the very street market Ryotaro and I visited in last week’s video!

And speaking of Ryotaro, his shattered clock wasn’t so lucky, as you can see in the photo below.

Of the many earthquakes I’ve experienced over the years, yesterday’s was easily the most frightening.

100 people were injured, the Shinkansen between Tokyo and Sendai remains closed and many folks in the Tohoku region were given an eerie reminder of what happened almost exactly 10 years next month. In fact, yesterday’s earthquake has been described as an aftershock of that distant event.

Last night serves as a fantastic reminder of Japan’s architectural genius, as thousands of buildings from Sendai to Tokyo shook violently without any serious destruction or collapsed buildings, with temporary power outages being the main cause of concern for folks living in the greater Tokyo area.  Hopefully the country will be back to normal by tomorrow.

On a more positive note, I’m now finally back from the Hokkaido trip and for the most part, it was a success  -as you’ll see in a few weeks.

I’ll admit, Japan’s most northern point felt like a different country, as blocks of ice began to appear floating in the sea and the coastline turned to ice. For hours upon end we drove across endless nothingness and felt like we were at the edge of the world. It all felt a bit like a mini Journey Across Japan episode and you can check out the crazy photos from the road trip below.

I hope I can do the trip justice in the edit, but before then we still have an episode inside the traditional Kyoto townhouses (next up), a Q&A episode and another trip with Ryotaro around the best Ryokan we’ve ever stayed in to date (an impressive title given that’s essentially all Ryotaro and I do in every video).

So plenty to look forward to this month folks and I’m currently planning a live show later this week on Abroad Perspective.

I hope you’ve all had a great weekend - I’m off to buy Ryotaro a new clock.
Chris

HOKKAIDO ROAD TRIP
My erstwhile companion Pete is a presenter on NHK and holds the title of being my best American friend.
He's also from Kansas, so you can expect lots of jokes about the Wizard of Oz in this one. In fact, the whole bloody trip felt worryingly reminiscent of the journey made in the Wizard of Oz.

Adam Armour-Florence

I was worried for a bit, thought that Dave in Japan would come to an end! Glad to see that you’re alive and well :)

Scary! Really looking forward to your upcoming videos!

Glad you're safe!

Glad to hear you're ok Chris! Really Love your Content!

Maybe the earthquake was really caused by The Nome King... 🤔 Glad you’re doing alright!

Laura Beaumont

Instead of calling strangers dumb, please do a quick google search, otherwise you’ll learn very quickly that you, in fact, are dumb. https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/earthquakes/during.html

Brock Otterbacher

Umm... what? Load-bearing door frames (exterior and reinforced interior) are definitively more stout than lying under an Ikea press-board desk. Don't be dumb.

Michael Moore

Clearly, Ryotaro is trying to kill you, Chris. Glad you're OK. And even Ryotaro ...

Michael Moore

So happy to hear that you and everyone else is alright! I‘m also really looking forward to seeing more of Peter, you‘ve hyped him up for sure 😃!

Never stand in a doorway during a quake. That’s a myth, and people have died from such. Experts say lay next to your bed, or a sturdy piece of furniture, so that if the ceiling collapses, it creates a pocket for you. Grim, but true. Glad you’re all right dude.

Brock Otterbacher

Strange coincidence, almost 10 years to the Month to Fukushima, 2011. 🚑 Relieved to know those around you and the place you were staying are alright. 🎏🧸 Hokkaido in the winter is one of my favorite places in Japan. The winter landscape, stills and focuses my mind. 🏔. Looking forward to the Hokkaido footage. ⛩👍

Ryori

Bloody hell, what a quake! Not fun. That Twitter video makes me think that every cupboard in Japan should come with tiny-house-style barriers over every shelf, to keep stuff from falling off.

Nynke de Haas

Yeah, being up in a tall building designed for an earthquake can be extra scary. The building is on rollers or some similar system and is designed to move and sway freely. This actually keeps you safe, but it is scary and nothing is going to stay on the shelves. My dad was on the 10th floor during Loma Prieta, and it was apparently quite the trip.

NM

Thats so crazy to ride out an earthquake that many floors up. I am so glad you are safe!

SeanW

Glad you guys are safe and no one was really harmed during it! I grew up in California where smaller ones are fairly common, but I can only imagine what something that big would feel like

Parker Brown

I can only imagine the slew of British swears you were yelling as it was happening haha. But in all seriousness, I’m glad you’re safe!

Eyyy J

Thank goodness you are safe! Sending my thoughts to those who were injured...may they make a full recovery soon. It makes one realize that time is precious. Take care and stay safe.

Jolie

It sounds terrifying I'm glad you're okay! Nothing like the tiny earthquakes I remember happening in the UK growing up, feeling the entire building shaking sounds SCARY AF!

Whew, glad you're safe. That sounds terrifying.

Argus9 (Jonathan)

So glad to hear that you're all doing well. So scary to have that happen but so grateful Japan has invested so much into making sure these earthquakes are as safe as possible. Very excited to see the new content and hope for no more earthquakes (at least not for a while).

Michelle Thong

So glad you're safe.

Oof... Glad no one died. It's incredible the buildings are still standing after that. Bless those earthquake support beams or whatever magic they put into the structures.

Santeri Edelmann

Being on the ground during an earthquake is bad enough but 12 storeys up?! Bugger that!

Glad you're home safe.

Susanne Tassin

Very glad to hear you're safe and that there wasn't any serious destruction. Thanks for the photos and looking forward to the video.

Rainstorm Travel

Stay safe everybody 👍

I’m from Kansas. We love Wizard of Oz jokes... Glad your safe.

Grad to hear you are safe.

Those big earthquakes are scary, glad you are ok. Looking forward to the videos! Especially the Hokkaido roadtrip sounds and looks amazing.

Glad you are safe chris looking forward to the hokkaido trip videos as I'm going to go there again when the situation permits.

Deric Chong

Glad everyone is safe and well Chris (well other than Ryotaro's clock...RIP), I'm sure it was very unnerving to be swaying about on the 12th floor! Looking forward to the Hokkaido video, it's on my list for my next trip to Japan.....whenever that ends up being!

Caraniel

Glad to hear you're safe, looking forward to the video.

Mim Franklin

Pray that nothing serious will happend afterward. Stay safe Chris, looking forward for new videos ahead...

Very glad you and your friend are all safe. So sad to hear about the clock, presumably there will be a ceremony. Great pics. Hugs, N
