JOURNEY Across Japan: Escape to Fuji | DAY 6 - Did we actually see MOUNT FUJI!?

6 days and 1,500km on the road, through mountains, typhoons and terror. It's been quite a journey, with each day being more eventful than most days on the original Journey Across Japan series!

Journey Across Japan | Day 6 | Patreon Diary

In what must have felt like the longest week of all time, we set off on the final leg of our journey today, across the stunning Izu peninsula, that juts out into the Pacific Ocean just south of Mount Fuji.

The weather on this trip has been nothing but dreadful, but at last today we were rewarded with bright blue skies.

Though we didn't have long to enjoy them, as we ventured inside a full-blown nightmare.

Today's capsule challenge sent in by a viewer was to create some sort of in-car gadget, using our many days on the road as inspiration. The caveat; we only had 1,000 yen each to spent in Daiso, the 100 yen store.

To find some inspiration on the way, we decided to visit some sort of attraction, that felt like a cross between a nightmare and the mind of a serial killer.

A huge cavernous place, devoid of people - except us - the horrifying and frighteningly realistic creations, creatures and set-pieces within, certainly made an impression.

I wasn't overly comfortable coming face to face with a realistic depiction of ET either.

After stumbling through a greenhouse filled with even more terror, we eventually found our way out and fled to Daiso to make our premium in-car gadgets.

I wisely spent my 1,000 yen creating a in-car security system, as you'll discover in the video!

For our final location on the trip, we ascended Mount Omuro, a 500m volcano overlooking the town of Ito.

And because we're lazy, we used the chair lift.

The mountain is essentially a mini Mount Fuji and towers over the town.

And it was here at the peak of Mount Omuro where we received a fantastic view of Mount Fuji in the distance, as we brought Journey Across Japan to a close!

Honestly, it couldn't have been any more perfect, and it was completely unexpected. It felt like fate was finally on our side.

While we were very lucky to see a distant view of Mount Fuji in the final moments of the series, as to whether we got a more substantial close-up view, you'll have to wait and see when the series airs!

All in all, Journey Across Japan: Escape to Fuji was a raging success; the weather may have let us down for half the trip, but the places we visited and the people we met along the way made it one hell of a week.

The challenge now is to rapidly edit all 6 episodes to release throughout November. Though I'm please to announce the first episode will be October 29th, when both Joey and I will be releasing videos.

The first episode will feature leaving Tokyo, the forgotten quarry, meeting an angry Natsuki and the abandoned love hotel - it's going to be a very strong opening to the series I think!

And later this week, I'll share with you a Patreon sneak peek of the intense trailer for the whole series!

I think by filming the series and editing it afterwards - like a conventional tv series - we've been able to raise the quality of Journey Across Japan this time around. It'll be far more consistent than our previous series 2 years ago.

For me personally it was a lot more fun as well, throwing all my energy into filming, then throwing all my energy into editing once it's done, rather than trying to do it all at once like last time! The series will be all the more impressive for it,

And certainly if the series is successful, I won't hesitate to start planning another follow-up Journey Across Japan series early next year.

For now though, I hope this Patreon diary has got you fired up for the series; if not, then I suspect the upcoming trailer certainly will!

And before JAJ kicks off, there's another video out this week, but more on that later!

First off though, I need to sit in a chair for a day and recover from this 1,500km journey.

While I loved your first series across Japan, I can't imagine how insanely difficult it was and am glad you learned a lot about the process this time for JAJ. Loved what you've put out and the quality of the videos is fantastic!

I can't wait to see it, and loved reading the diary of your trip to get a taster :)

I just wanted to say thank you for these written diary logs for each day of your trip. They have been incredibly fun to read and made me really pumped for this series.

Man, Chris, you gotta stop saying that the original Journey Across Japan was two years ago... Because like, that's totally not possible at all. There's NO WAY it's been that long. None. SO pumped for the videos!

John

Woohoo! Congratulations!

Nynke de Haas

What a great finish to your trip diary! Cannot wait to see the incredible scenery and learning more about Japan in your upcoming series. Rest well and have fun reliving the adventure while editing. Cheers to you! 🍻

Chris has definitely developed a strong style... As I was reading the post I kept hearing his favourite sound effects in my head 😂

Tonight on Bottom Gear, i buy a car alarm system for 1000 yen, Hammond climbs mount fuji that's to his scale and James turns into a mummy

I'm hoping for CGI EXPLOSIONS

Wait until you see the trailer. It’s next level absurdity, haha.

Yes! Can't wait to see the results! These sneak peeks have been awesome.

Argus9 (Jonathan)

He covered the abandoned love hotel and the capsule hotel with his own spin/perspective. Hopefully it’ll attract his viewers to the series!

Next journey: okinawa ?

Really enjoyed reading your posts on the trip, can't wait to watch when it's out!

Congratulations you completed the journey and made it to one of my favorite places the Izu-Hanto. BTW, that ET looks like a dead person that should receive the courtesy of a burial. I almost vomited at the site of the skin. Not sure it is an attraction...Yuk. Thank you for mentioning the Izu-Hanto. As you know, it is the site of one of Japan's most famous stories, "Izu no Odoriko", the Dancer from Izu, a coming of age story of a young girl set in the Edo-period. I travelled the trail mentioned in the story several years ago. I would recommended it to literature and nature mavens. Shimoda, a town on the tip of the Izu-Hanto, known as the place Commodore Perry first landed in Japan in 1853. He returned the following year,1854, forcing the Shogun in Tokyo, into signing a comprising treaty. This would eventually lead to the end of Edo-period and the start of Meiji-period. As a bonus, some of the most famous Ryokans in Japan are on the Izu-Hanto, many dating from the Edo-period. Looking forward to the videos. 楽しみにしている。頑張って。。。

So fucking excited!!! Judging by the way you chose to produce this series, there is no doubt in my mind, that it's going to be a high quality watch, indeed!

I couldn't be more fired up if i tried! Lol🔥 Mount Omuro looks gorgeous, and I'd of absolutely have taken the lift also, most likely. 😂 Stand in E.T. is dreadfully terrifying by the way, what on earth (or not on earth) is it made from?! Lol!

Sounds amazing! Already excited to watch, and already excited for the next one in 2021!! As for joeys videos about JAJ what will they be like?

Cannot wait for the adventure, 😀looking forward to seeing Mount Fuji at last, just don’t burnt yourself out from editing this time

Thomas menz

Great work! Thank you for sharing it with us all. Looking forward to seeing it all ⛰️🌋🏔️⛩️

Glad to hear you finally got a view of Mt Fuji. I feel like week long JAJ things would be easier to do since you can just record the week then edit once it's done

Khaltzane

I am super, super excited that you filmed on Mount Omuro, the volcano that looks like a kid drew it because it is such a perfect cone shape. Hope you got drone shots!

Cannot wait to see the adventure😀 and I’m glade you didn’t kill yourself this time by editing on the road.

Looking forward to the antics and the challenges throughout this rendition of JAJ. Hats off to you for taking this time to keep us entertained while most of the world is shut down.

Blace

Looks like the curse of Mt Fuji has ended. You will get nothing but clear and spectacular shots of Mt Fuji for the rest of your life.

That's awesome! Nice job and it looks like it was fun 😃
