Why I Bought an ORIGINAL GAME BOY in Akihabara | Patreon Exclusive Video
Added 2020-09-19 01:47:03 +0000 UTC
AN IMPULSE PURCHASE 8 YEARS IN THE MAKING.
But how could such a beautiful creation spark so much childhood resentment?
And why did I finally buy one?
ALSO this week, news on the upcoming Journey Across Japan: Escape to Fuji road trip series and of course FILM FRIDAY!
All that and quite possibly more in this week's Patreon exclusive video, hosted from a hotel room in Tokyo.
► Watch: https://youtu.be/aTQCWxEeuqE
Keep an eye out as there’s a fun video of Shinjuku at night coming out later today!
I'll keep this short and sweet and let the video do the talking and I hope my nostalgic purchase encourages you to dive into your cupboard an unearth your favourite console from years passed.
Also did anyone here actually BEAT this damn game? Can it be done?
Chris
I grew up with gaming, even had a pong game in the '70s that predates the Atari. Gameboy color was my first handheld, and I wish I still had my first edition Play Station. The first PlayStation was basically a development kit that still has the Parallel port to connect to a PC.

The game... themusic... the memories. I think it was the first videogamer I ever played.

When I was about 13 I swapped my original gameboy for a watch that was also a tv remote control and while it was fun switching channels in Currys this act is still up there today in my top 3 biggest regrets in life.

My first GameBoy was an opaque lime green GameBoy Color with Pokémon Yellow, which I got for Christmas when I was ten. My first Mario game was a few years prior, when my dad brought home Super Mario World on a secondhand SNES when I was seven. We started a new game and played through all 99 levels together; later, it was rereleased along with Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (the Yoshi games are the cutest games ever made, fight me) on the GameBoy Advance, along with my first Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. While unfortunately, my GBC was stolen in middle school along with my copies of Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, and Silver, I do still have my pink GBA and all its games. I remember that my parents must've bought my brothers' and my GBCs as a bundle from Costco, because they came with a Pelican game gear kit, which included an LED light to allow us to play in lighting besides direct sunlight. No more were we at the mercy of daylight or streetlights on car rides (of course, Dad had us all convinced it was illegal to use the dome lights or something); we achieved true gaming freedom that happy Christmas.

I loooved playing Super Mario on Gameboy when I was a kid. I actually managed to play it to the end. If you wait until after the credits role, the game starts again, but this time in some kind of "super hard mode" with even more monsters to kill. It was so much fun :)
My dad actually still plays tetris on his gameboy while sitting on the toilet ;) The gameboy must be 30 years old by now and still works!

My first Game Boy was a Christmas present from my sister back in 1995. I played Tetris 2, then Tetris Attack 2 years later. In 1998, I bought a Game Boy Color in purple. By then, Nintendo started adding card and board games to their game cartridge selections. I had Yahtzee and UNO added to my other previously mentioned games. By the time I got my Nintendo 3DS Lite, I also purchased a whole lot of games for it and took it with me everywhere so I had something to occupy my time. I still have my GBCs and my 2 DS-lites, and the games still work.

Its a testament to Nintendo that even 30 years later the humble Gameboy is enjoyable to play. I myself still have my SuperNES from the Australian launch day in 1992, still the best birthday present I've ever recieved.

omg that game was my favourite, I stole my brothers game boy to play it all the time XD And somehow I did manage to defeat it yay!

Great patron video, easily worth the $2 a month

I too loved the Mario Brother games from the early days of gaming, particularly the video arcade versions. If you see an Atari console the next time your are in Akihabara, perhaps you may consider purchasing it. Steve Jobs first job after dropping out of college was on the night production line at Atari in Silicon Valley, which was in part how he met the Home Brew computer enthusiasts club, which built the first Apple computer and the rest is history. Cheers, keep up the great work.

Get Super Mario Land 3 as well. IMO it's the strongest in the seires, and the first game playing as Wario.
Zelda: Link's Awakening is an amazing GB game too. I spent months trying to defeat the final boss, then put it away for 2 years, and managed to do it first try when I came back. o.O

Great, 90% of your Patreons subs will now be spent on AA batteries 🤣

I suddenly feel really good about never having finished a computer game, because now I can frame it as something that's kept me from turning bitter, rather than a sign of my failing discipline and patience :). And I think the new Journeys across Japan are going to be amazing :) :) :)

Hearing the Super Mario Land theme song instantly transported me back to the 90s and had me humming along. Love it!

The last Nintendo handheld made for people who like their hands. I found my GameBoy Color recently and it has sadly been relegated to being displayed on a bookshelf as I can't play it for more than 10 minutes without crippling myself forever :|

Hmm I bought my first ever console this April. A mysterious thing called switch.... I’ve always been a PC gamer :)

Oh I loved playing that game growing up 😁 was great to see it again! The ideas for the road trip sound amazing, can’t wait to see it!

Lovely looking game boy 🤩 I doubt you'd ever get something so pristine in the UK. Can't wait for the new road trip! It sounds great!

Aww bless. Good luck, don’t throw the Gameboy at the wall and try Kirby’s Pinball instead. Loads more fun 👍

The original Super Mario Land on Game Boy AND Millenium Actress, a man of taste.
By the way, is Sharla involved in this upcoming road trip since she is in Tokyo as well or is it just a coincidence?

Super Mario Land! Love that game so much. You'll be amazed at how much better you'll be at the game now as an adult, what took hours before will now take about 30 minutes to complete the whole game

This sounds a lot like my experience with Super Mario Land, except I had a Game Boy Clear! Absolutely loved that game.
In my late teens I sold the Game Boy off to my much younger brother, I'll have to ask him what ever happened to it...

How serendipitous you uploaded this video, as the Mario 3D All-stars was released today! My first Gameboy game was Tetris.
Can't wait for the new Journey Across series! I just finished re-watching your other one for the whatever-th time! All the best Chris, thanks for always giving me something to look forward to!

Don't worry Chris, I have also never beat super mario land when I played it back in the days. Perhaps I should revisit it as well and beat it once and for all! Speaking of nostalgia I recently bought super mario 3D all-stars for the switch, which is a collection of some of the best 3D mario games, gonna be reliving through childhood memories as well (the good and the bad :P).
Also I'm so keen for another journey across Japan series, and to see Joey featured once more. Just be sure to not to push yourself too hard health-wise ok?! I'll be eagerly awaiting for another escape to Japan through your videos :)

Oh god, the game music is a pure sound induced time machine. Lol 😂 I also cant wait to watch this anime, im always looking for new ones to experience. 📺 I cannot even express how excited i am for your guys' adventures to come; i feel like its Christmas time, and im told to wait before i can see the gifts. Lol
Whatever you have in store, I absolutely cant wait for it all.

I miss a Game Boy. Isn't it possible to save the data in the middle of the play? Anyway, I'm looking forward to your new journey!!

Sennen Joyu has that GORGEOUS sequence across multiple period films set to Susumu Hirasawa's "Run". I still get goosebumps listening to that track.

Finished watching your video. Good for you. Conquer that mountain. My best friend had a game boy when I was a kid. She was quite good at it. I was terrible. Even now I have never been past level two of Mario. Those damn mushrooms. Impressed that you are taking them on. Scary fu$&ers.

I almost bought a Nintendo switch lite today, despite not actually having any time to play... because in that moment the bright colours drew me in 😟
