Japan's Taxis of the Night (4k Patreon Exclusive Video) | *Film Friday* "Tokyo Godfathers" (2003)

So a couple of days back I was visiting a friend in neighbouring Iwate prefecture, and after he shot off in the evening to meet someone better, I grabbed my new camera and went for a night time stroll alone.

I don’t do it as often as I should, which is a shame as photography is often best done alone, when it’s just you, your camera and the street with no distractions along the way.

There was no plan other than to test out the new camera and see how it performed in a night time setting - of course, in glorious 4K once again.

And as I wandered the streets, filming folks strolling around and taxis meandering through the narrow roads and lanes, I noticed there seemed to be a heck of a lot of taxis around.

Even as the streets emptied and the crowds disappeared, middle aged men could be seen prowling around in their late night taxis at every turn. I swear to god, Japan has way more taxis than it needs. There’s a taxi for every man, woman and child in the country.

But I was so pleased with the spontaneous test footage, that I hastily edited it together with a beautiful soundtrack from Shin Suzuma (“Bonsai Forest”) and this was the end result.

Also, last week’s mountain shrine video is finally available to watch in 4K on Youtube!

It’s another busy week, as this weekend sees the release of a new Abroad in Japan video on What it’s Like to Own a Sushi Restaurant. It’s a video I’ve wanted to make with my friend Satoshi Ueno - the owner - for many years, so it’s exciting to finally feature his restaurant and his story after all this time.

After it’s released, I’ll return with some behind the scenes Patreon commentary in the next few days, along with some exciting news about a huge upcoming project!

But is it as exciting as the this week’s FILM FRIDAY?!

Tokyo Godfathers (2003), Anime Comedy-Drama
Director: Satoshi Kon

I remember watching Tokyo Godfathers for the first time and thinking how absurd the premise of the film was.

Three homeless, including a runaway teenager, a middle-aged father riddled with regret and a drag queen who stumble across a disowned baby in a dumpster in central Tokyo on Christmas Eve and go off an adventure across the city in search of the mother and answers. That premise alone should be enough to make you want to watch the movie.

It’s the kind of animated film you won’t see Pixar making in a hurry - although after watching Tokyo Godfathers, you’ll wish Hollywood dedicated more time and resources to producing animated films for an adult audience.

But the film is memorable not just because of the hilarious characters and their bizarre adventures, but once again thanks to the artistic direction of director Satoshi Kon, who makes every single scene pop with cinematic detail that surpasses a regular motion picture.

In some ways, if I’d never visited Japan I would have found the plot farfetched to the point of disbelief. However, having seen the cardboard dwellings homeless people call home in densely populated neighbourhoods of Tokyo, and having met the feisty drag queens who dominate the bars of Japan at night, over the years I’ve certainly come to find the characters and the setting are all the more believable for it!

And though in a live action setting, the premise of the film would likely make uncomfortable viewing (particularly the scenes with the baby), it’s a reminder of how good anime can be at opening doors and breathing life into worlds that are impossible to do in live action feature films.

Watching Tokyo Godfathers helped me realise that and turned an anime sceptic into a full-blown believer of the medium.

I love Satoshi Kon <3 thank ou for taking us into his the nostalgic, poetic and cinematic worlds

Absolutely beautiful.

This makes me feel like i miss japan, even though i've never been :(

Amelia

Really enjoy the last scene. The bike outside, the warm light from the indoors with the two people. Reminds me of the artistic world building of a Ghibli film

haha I started the Taxis of the night video muted and realized about a min in. Once I heard your choice of soundtrack it hit me just how differently I saw your video vs your intended feeling. I had a added a thriller track to it. Each scene where a taxi's headlights caught you and red in service light glaring its murderous intent as you tried your best to hid in the alleys of Iwate, never able to fully run from the ever omnipresent taxis roaming the city. and then *BAM* tranquil, peaceful and serene as I unmuted the vid. well done.

stunning vid Chris! I hope you'll be able to enjoy your photography hobby more, would love to see more videos like this

Joy

awesome relaxing video chris! more of this definitely

Mr Fujisawa

Now if I could only have this on a 3 hour time frame, it'd be perfect for unwinding and relaxing. ♥ This is visually stunning, Chris. What a difference the 4k makes, its basically as close as I can get to being there and experiencing it first hand since none of us really can right now. And the music of Shin Suzuma just transports you to another place. Dare I say my headache I had before watching seemed to even dissipate by listening to it and watching. ♥ This is a complete visual and audio treat and work of moving art, and its only fault is that it isn't longer! lol! And I remember stalking the shelves at my first job (the elusive extinct video rental store lol) with Tokyo Godfathers! I always meant to watch it, and never, for some reason, god the chance. I think now is a decent time as any to put it on after all these years. I owe it to myself if nothing else, as I know I will enjoy it. ^_^

Isn't it due this weekend coming? Unless I misunderstood.....

Is there a new ETA for the sushi video?

Gaw

now there's a movie recommendation I can't wait to act on! I also loved the shots of Morioka and have resolved to one day return there, and now that I've already tried out Pairon's jajamen around the corner, I should have ample time to eat skewers in that beautiful izakaya. I held my phone up to the izakaya's crystal-clear sign on my large TV and had Google Translate transliterate it, and now I have Chanchiki Sakaba pinned in Maps. I feel ready :). I hope you can do some more crisp & quiet videos, but hopefully with ambient sound every now and then! One of the things I miss most about Japan is the sound of cicadas. Sorry if that would mean that you'd have to keep quiet behind the camera :)

Nynke de Haas

wow the video colour is so good, and I love the music and have just been checking out Shin Suzuma's soundcloud so cheers for that!

That video was a visual treat. I feel better for it.

I swear that the majority of these shots look as though they could have been lifted from a hollywood movie. Nice stuff!

Videos look awesome!!

You hit the nail on the head about how someone with no knowledge or experience of Japanese culture would be lost and not understand the story. I was one of those people. When the movie "Rising Sun" with Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes first came out, I thought the Japanese characters were written as evil and greedy. I didn't comprehend the plot and drew incorrect conclusions. I finally saw this movie again in 2017. It was like watching the movie with new eyes. Not only did the plot make more sense, I could actually sympathize with the characters whom I formerly thought were "bad." Mind blown. 🙃

Michelle Mundling

Loving these videos Chris! (No biased judgment here :P) Always look forward to them.

Really enjoying these little atmospheric vignettes, makes me somehow both miss Japan like crazy but also feel like I'm there!

Low light performance looking fantastic on that S1H. I know that was one of the downsides of the GH5 with its micro four-thirds sensor! Can't wait to see what productions you make with this 👀

Satoshi Kon is amazing. Paprika is probably my favourite but that's only because Megumi Hayashibara voices Paprika in the Japanese version. Tokyo Godfathers is definitely amazing though. The camera work in your videos are amazing.

Khaltzane

Have you checked out Liam Wong’s TO:KY:OO for inspiration yet? Apparently he also goes through his thought process and editing process so it’s not just a picture book.

Eels

That last shot is just, *chefs kiss*

I basically live on a diet of synthwave music! - And crisps. I feel synthwave music is better served for dense urban cityscapes like Tokyo or Osaka that fit the Blade Runner aesthetic. I can't wait to take this camera for a spin around the streets of Tokyo later this month and do just that!

Abroad in Japan

Chris, you have reawakened my forgotten/buried love for night-time cityscapes. You're right, it IS the 80s and Asian cities show it best. What is the connection, the intangible magic quality? And I haven't even seen Bladerunner... *slopes off to maybe see about seeing Bladerunner **in a similar vein, check out @gregforaday on Insta (I have no affiliation or connection with him whatsoever, just love his pics)

Sonya Ross

Lots of love to Kon-sensei. The guy was, and still is, a legend.

Nicolas G.

Great choice for today’s film. I show it to all my classic movie friends who don’t know much about anime since it’s based on an old classic western 3 Godfathers. ❤️

thefunkybrowngirl

I’m a SIMP for Satoshi Kon. I’m glad you’re enjoying his films!

Eyyy J

Chris, have you gotten into "outrun" or, 80's inspired, symthwave music? I know you like 80's bands and whatnot. This video you shot is stunning, as I love night cityscapes. Needs some of that, "Bladerunner" color grading now!
