What REALLY Happened Making the 'DRIVING in Japan' Video | *Patreon Exclusive BTS*

Unsurprisingly, not everything goes according to plan when filming an Abroad in Japan video.
In fact it's a bloody miracle if everything goes right.

From dodgy equipment and bad weather, to painful decisions to remove entire scenes from the video, in this Patreon exclusive Behind the Scenes video, I reveal the the ups-and-downs, mishaps and lessons learned in the recent "Driving in Japan" episode on Abroad in Japan.

Watch: https://youtu.be/Kg0k14Jp12I

Overall, I'm delighted how it turned out and it was the perfect practice run for the mini Journey Across Japan with Joey the Animeman in September, (in terms of learning how to film inside a moving car), and especially for the Natsuki smoking documentary, where I want to give a cinematic quality to the scenery and the region Natsuki calls home.

Enjoy the video and if there's a question about the episode that you want answered, write away in the comments below!

As for me, I'm off to admire my new hair.

Hi Chris, that behind the scenes information was really interesting. However there is one thing you didn’t answer: As I don’t expect you to be driving the car and flying the car at the same time (sorry, if I am underestimating you on this), how did you film the driving car with your drone? Does it have auto pilot (probably not just the drone, but the car as well 😂) or did you have an assistant doing the drone shots (or the driving) for you? Greetings Sarah

So cool to see the effort, thought process & technical tricks behind these videos! Keep trying new things & always follow your creative gut! 😂 You inspire us 💕

Now I know why Chris spends so much time editing! Absolutely mental

I enjoyed this behind the scenes video. Thanks for putting it out. I hope you do more abandoned places videos in the future. You have the data analytics about video time but I don't mind longer 20 minutes videos (that might be because I'm YouTube Premium and don't see the mid-videos ads that are driving people crazy.)

Absolutely loved the Driving video, just became a patron today and looking forward to going through all the extra content! I only found your channel this year and watching through 'Journey Across Japan' was such an awesome experience, I have fond memories of it, similar to the feeling you get from finishing a great show after getting attached to the characters, it has a sense of nostalgia to it now. Can't wait for similar future endeavours, thanks for the hours of entertainment, insight and bountiful joy fresh time Chris.

Hi Chris, thanks for the grate insights on how such videos are actually made. Also, after seeing what you made out of the beach scene I was impressed, because I did not notice it in the final video. But I have a request to you. Since you shared the name of the soundtrack you used at the beginning of the video I would like to ask if you could share the name from another one. You stoped using it probably about 3 to 4 years ago. If you search on YouTube for „Abroad in Japan Soundtrack“ there is a 50 second video with a clip out of a video from you with that soundtrack. I really did like this one and spent hours on trying to find it - obviously without a result...

that will do,thanks!

I could watch your drone footage all day long 😍

At which time stamp in the video? Most of it was shot in Shonai, Yamagata!

Abroad in Japan

chris, Mind to tell what was the town name ? I know its somewhere in tohoku and my curious mind is demanding for a name

I loved the video and thought the introduction music made the video. Sadly it costs $49 to buy! It's a shame that Premium beat don't make it available for a domestic price!

"Kill your darlings" feels so bad - I´d like to see the footage, that didn´t make it into the video though! Will you upload it or is it a treasure, that will always remain unseen for the world?

I had no idea you did this much actual film MAKING—I like it more now I know, honestly. It’s pleasant to know about process and effort

Claire

I understand why you cut out the speed limit scenes from the video, but i'd still love to hear/read your take on this topic, because it's something that really bugs me when driving in Japan, they are so outlandishly low and i completely fail to comprehend why. Even the Japanese, who usually follow the rules strictly, don't seem to take them seriously because they make no sense at all.

Naryoril

I imagined Sharla lurking by the side of the road, as she was in Sakata at the same time too, judging by her instagram pictures :).

Mmm, Calpis...

What an adorable photo of you clutching that voucher 😅

Did you enjoy your Big Mac?

Chris, the last video was great. It is a clearly a work of art, it is optimistic. The video touches the heart, in particular the flow, the editing and filming. As you noted the video moves according to the narration. I will remember that. Continuing, Chris I was impressed with the creativity you imparted in this video. Lastly, thank you for telling us about the techniques you learned along the way. Learning by doing. Next, my favorite scene were rice leaves moving in swarms. The scene was taken with a drone, the rice leaves were bunched and moving like waves in the ocean, superbly filmed. I have watched that scene several times. If anything, the scene is like an antidepressant to prevent depression. The image is bright and blessed with nature. Great job.

Next juicy reveal: Natsuki is just an animatronic puppet and the Abroad in Japan channel is some sort of disturbing sequel to the Calvin and Hobbes strip where grown-up swanky-haired Calvin can't separate fiction from reality.

Eels

The video is entertaining and beautiful!

Nancy Takahashi

Each new video's production quality gets better and better! Thanks for the BTS! Now I HAVE to try Bikkle!

Michael P.

Also, your haircut looks really good! 😉

Froppuccino

I appreciate your desperation in getting what you want, haha! Your film techniques have really improved and I sincerely look forward to how you use them going forward and what other things you learn and utilize! The edited beach scene was gorgeous and I would not have thought it wasn't real had you not shown the unedited bit. Japan really is that beautiful.

Froppuccino

The drone footage you take is always impressive. I've toyed around with a friends drone and bloody hell they're hard to use even without any camera attached

Khaltzane

My favourite shot as well! Found it by sheer good luck while driving in a secluded area and turned around to re-film it, haha.

Abroad in Japan

Thanks! 🥳

Abroad in Japan

great BTS, also the video is amazing, really funny and interesting, that region looks amazing. I was wondering how did you achieve the scenes like those around 2:28; did Natsuki filmed those.

Its been a long ass sleep deprived day. And this is just what the metaphorical doctor ordered. Lol

Jewel - (Freyja's Konjures)

Gimme a bickle over calpis any day

Don Murray

I remember wondering why Natsuki’s shirt was wet, but for some reason it didn’t cross my mind that you could’ve faked the weather😂 it looked very good, the entire video was really beautiful!

hands down my favourite shot in film was you driving around the corner and having the small tori gate with the path going into the woods on the left , and your car driving on the far right. every time I have seen that scene, I just want to go there myself.

John Horner

That’s the spirit

Abroad in Japan

Nice haircut.

I have to get up at 4am for work, in 6 hours, but if there ever was a good enough reason to stay up is to watch an exclusive patreon video

Oscar Calderon

YES! And in fact this video was shot on the new S1H (the narrative scenes in the apartment). I can't wait to see Natsuki's face in ProRes RAW 12bit.

Abroad in Japan

This is will be a fine distraction from studying for summer finals! And Chris I heard you picked up the S1H for ProRes RAW. Can’t wait to see what you make out of that 👀!
