WHY Japanese is Difficult to Translate & RYOTARO'S Top 3 Movies Revealed | *Patreon Exclusive Video*

The arch villain of the Abroad in Japan Cinematic Universe is back.

So this week instead of my film recommendation, I sat down with Risottoro to hear him reveal his top 3 favourite films (in glorious 4K no less).

Apologies for missing our regular slot this week. As I mentioned on Friday, Ryotaro coerced me into doing an impromptu live show on his channel, which to my shock and surprise, turned out to be relatively fun.

IN case you missed and want to re-watch it, you can check it out here.

ALSO later this week I'm announcing another Q&A video for late August, given how popular the last two were back in April and May.

Not only that, I find something oddly pleasing about producing a trilogy.
(Though hopefully the third episode in the trilogy will still be as good as the first two; a feat most trilogies fail to achieve. Go on. Prove me wrong. *Not including LOTR Return of the King*).

Get your questions in early for the Q&A episode in the comments section below this post and I'll try to fit in as many as I can, amidst the bizarre enquiries and amusingly abusive hate comments sent in by beloved Abroad in Japan viewers.

I'll be back in a few days with a behind the scenes Patreon video discussing the driving in Japan episode, but until then enjoy this chat with the ever cheeky Ryotaro, which we filmed in a rather impressive location overlooking Sendai station.

I don't know why we've never filmed up there before?!

Comments

I'm slowly working my way through all the years of content you put out on Patreon and I didn't comment on anything yet. So, this first one is actually pretty random but I saw Golden Slumber back in 2010 at Berlinale and quite enjoyed it. I kinda forgot about it and Ryotaro mentioning it in the video brought back some fond memories of that time when I would take some days off from work just to head to Berlin to watch japanese movies in the middle of the night or that were over four hours long.

I just wanna know... what was it like for Ryotaro to speak English for the first time, discovering the power of sarcasm?

面白い話だ。仙台駅が見える。行って見たい。楽しかった。

Ryori

For the Q&A: Where should I go if I have 5 days in Japan?

For the Q&A: Out of all the regional dishes you have tasted which one is your favourite?

Milena

Definitely worth checking out, I also recommend watching this analysis of it: https://youtu.be/01E5otZCpqw

Feris Bueller is indeed a good film. BTW a film I recommend and which is coincidentally set in east asia (Hong Kong to be specific) is In The Mood For Love: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118694/

Gus Elizondo

This was delightful, and i only wish it was longer. Lol 😂📼

Jewel - (Freyja's Konjures)

An excellent example!

Abroad in Japan

We filmed it together the other day! Should be up on his channel this week.

Half of all Japan's British residents (and Donald McDonalds) will be still remain when Ryotaro exacts his vision, but Chris won't be among them.

Are you going to do a video of Ryotoro’s new restaurant?

Jashlo

What a nice view of the station, I could imagine overseeing the pedestrian overpass and the junctions from above, especially on autumn where the trees around the station are amazing. Question: What is your recommended place to overview Sendai? Aomori? Also, did you visit the Neputa matsuri this August?

Hmm, I expected something really sophisticated from Ryotoro, interesting choices 🤔

Just have to say, Chris, that your YouTube videos are a staple here at our home as we are all self-confessed “Japanophiles” like yourself and Pete! We like to watch your videos over and over - so often, in fact, that my 6-year old fondly calls you “Chris Bread” (much to my amusement)! 🤣 Anyway, on to my question #AskAbroad: Have you ever had any memorable in-person encounters (good or bad) with a fan/viewer - and have any become actual friends of yours? Thanks again and looking forward to seeing your upcoming videos! 🤩

Oh and Mad Max: Fury Road, far superior to the other two.

Eels

Toy Story trilogy. 😂

Josh Lee

*Also not including Back to the Future III

That was fun! I got a bit distracted trying to find out exactly where opposite the station you were and looking at the Hayabusa shinkansen behind you (I don't have enough shinkansen in my life right now!), but I totally agree with Ryotaro on Ferris Bueller. I looked up Golden Slumber, and it's listed as a Korean movie with a Japanese writer so maybe we should know Korean to watch it :). Looking forward to the language video!
