JOURNEY Across Japan: Car Edition | PATREON Sneak Peek Video (*Watch Now*)
Added 2020-07-22 16:50:41 +0000 UTC
Beyond the relentless sarcasm, beyond the culture, the cuisine, the Ryotaro or even the Natsuki, the Abroad in Japan channel has always been about escapism.
Though to be fair, it took me about 5 years of making these videos before I worked that out for myself. Sometimes it's surprisingly hard to understand what gets you motivated.
As much as I like to make people laugh, teach useful things, or watch Natsuki break his teeth on European sweets, the thing I get a real kick out of is trying to capture the sense of adventure that comes with travel.
To allow viewers to escape through their smartphone screen or PC monitor and go somewhere else - even if it's just for a short while. I suspect partly because I still remember the frustration of wanting to see Japan back when I lived in the UK, but the kind of content I craved simply didn't exist at the time.
To that end I've been making a special effort for the upcoming Driving in Japan episode on Abroad in Japan, to do the Japanese countryside the justice it deserves. For the Japanese countryside is truly a magical place that the world doesn't get to see a great deal of (and sadly nor do many of my friends in Tokyo).
So before the release of the new video - which is shaping up to be more like several videos in one - I'd like to share this sneak peek video with you here on Patreon.
Hopefully it'll also prove I've not just been sitting on a bean bag for the past two weeks eating biscuits.

These scenes were all filmed in the past week (mostly in Yamagata) and I've stripped away all the narrative and sarcastic quips to give a more pure experience. With the exception of the ending!
AND in case you missed the previous post, there's another scene from this video here on Patreon, revealing why I'm Japan's most reckless driver.

ABROAD IN JAPAN PODCAST
Also, if you haven't caught this week's Podcast where Pete and I discuss the miracle of Japan's all you can eat & drink culture, you can tune into it here. It's a topic listeners have been asking us to cover for a while and one we're both well versed in!

Finally, tomorrow I'm catching up with the elusive Ryotaro for the first time in a while to promote his brand new restaurant (!?). Yes, that's right. Apparently he owns a restaurant now.
First a new Youtube channel, now this. The man's building a bloody empire.
He's summoned me to produce a video for his channel, where we check out this restaurant. Should be interesting given it's a traditional setting as well.
But I'll be sure to let you know if Ryotaro's restaurant is any good on Film Friday's Patreon post.
Honestly, I'll be devastated if they don't serve risottoro.
In the meantime, enjoy the new video - I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

What a gorgeous video. It almost hurts, not being able to be in these spots right now.
I am looking forward to watching the full video.
You are ever topping yourself Chris, keep it up!

日本の自然を舞台にする。撮影は素晴らしし、編集も一流し、是非是非質が高い作品を続けてね。また、ドローンの撮影は珍しい立場から撮影されるので、作品の美しきは珍しいだ。 Set in the nature of Japan. Shooting is excellent, editing is also first-rate, and by all means continue to work with high quality. Also, since the drone is shot from a rare position, the beauty of the work is rare.

Hey Chris, can I ask what the song/music is? It's a really nice accompaniment to the video!
2020-07-23 13:45:16 +0000 UTC
You're right, I'd forgotten it was set in Yamagata, it's a nice and chill film with beautiful animation. Funnily enough I recently watched a review of it by Chris Stuckmann on YouTube and he said Disney stopped its release in the US because the main character talks about having her first period, dear oh dear.

So excited for this! The preview you gave us was beautifully shot and was the most relaxing thing to watch all week. Is this in Yamagata?
On a side note, I recalled that a lovely Studio Ghibli movie "Only Yesterday" is set in Yamagata! If you're interested in seeing your old hometown animated Miyazaki style there ya go~ it's a memorable movie :D

I was planning a trip to Tohoku this year after years of watch your videos. Im gutted that it's cancelled. Guess I have to vicariously live through you again

Stunning new video and refreshing format with the carefully thought-out cinematography and musical accompaniment. The end bit with Natsuki is also quite touching. ❤️ #friendshipgoals

It's a really pretty video Chris and it really shows some of the beautiful nature of Japan! :-D I love the music too, it fits the video very well :-D I'm looking forward to the full video :-)

i still propose “abroad in-a-van” as the title :)

Don't go to the restaurant Chris, it's clearly a trap! Ryotaro will be lurking in a dark corner with a katana at the ready in case the obscurely placed ふぐ doesn't quite poison you enough. He's been planning this elaborate scheme for year's, all so that he can usurp ownership of the channel. The bloody Germans!

That was completely beyond otherworldly gorgeous, Chris...🌿🌸 What a god damn masterpiece, and its only just the preview yet?! And i loved that ending shot with you both.💙
Fucking blissful, and a wholesome depiction of friendship and the evolved journey of it all.
My god am i in for an in depth experience of grand proportion and tranquility. I can't believe the detail in those shots and the pure feeling of tranquillity they invoke.
The quality you put forth is quite frankly like nothing I've seen on YouTube. Its stunning and incredibly clean. 💙 There is a reason you're my favourite Youtuber and Japan dweller. 😊
And so proud of his restaurant, i cant wait to hear more details on that as well! 😊🎉
But in all seriousness, you deserve a bean bag and biscuits for the godly work you've been up to. (And of course so much more than that. Lol) Please remember to relax and take well deserved breaks in between. 💙

That $1500 drone definitely paid off. The quality is something I'd expect from a high budget film, not from some evil sarcastic british jvlogger

That sense of escapism and adventure is why I subscribed in the first place. Every frame and note of this snippet is a tribute to your love of Japan. Beautifully directed and produced.

The sneak peek is a little masterpiece! I‘m so in love with the music, it instantly gives me this magical Ghibli movie feeling!

I don't use the word lightly. But that little sneak peek was Fucking amazing. really. I've watched it some ten times, and I still get chills. It's the amazing views, together with the music. Great, great stuff!

YES escapism! Yes, countryside! I was feeling pretty good about my own explorations of the Dutch countryside around my house today (on a bike, with dikes and polders), but these views of Japan are something else. Natsukashii!
With wind rippling the rice fields! I can also see why you'd want Sharla along as a secret camera woman, for better, moving (car) shots :). And Ryotaro has bought a restaurant? Wow!

Man, here I was getting ready to watch the next chapter of the Journey Across Japan, with the theme music playing in my head, and instead I'm met with an unexpectedly wholesome video instead.
Love it.
I'll be looking forward to that new video! And holy crap. Ryotaro's a restauranteur now?! Might want to consider hiring a taster if he wants you to eat there. ;)
Great stuff all around Chris!

Great video Chris! Will add "driving through Japan" on my bucket list...but first need to get my license! This has motivated me to do so! Ryotaro is a sly minx ;) looking forward to see if he serves Risotto in his new restaurant!!
2020-07-22 17:15:46 +0000 UTC
I'm really excited after seeing the sneak peek! I agree with what you said about the channel, although I love all your videos and I'd probably watch you sit on a bean bag and eat biscuits for two weeks, my favourite part is the sense of journey and how fun travel is in your videos. By the way, thanks for increasing the frequency of the podcasts! Double the awesome.

Ah! Excellent Chris! I'm so stoked for what's to come! I feel so bad not exploring more of Japan outside the hustle and bustle of the city life when I was there. Stunning shots and great music too! Hell, you should make one of those 4hr loop videos of Japan's countryside with relaxing music, I'd probably throw it up and fall asleep to it every night!

Haha, it only dawned on me at the end of editing the video, that it'd turned out like a low budget car commercial.

And what if you had indeed been two weeks just sitting on a bean bag and eating biscuits? What’s wrong with that? But yeah to those that can’t go to Japan (yet!) your channel is a window to what we want to live there. We live our fantasies through you Chris! Thank you so much for making us dream!😊

All those breathtaking scenes coupled with the music made me tear up hard. Can't wait for the full video, Chris!

Not gonna lie, it looks like car advert. Not a bad thing.
2020-07-22 16:56:15 +0000 UTC
So beautiful, Chris, it brought tears to my eyes. The wind on the rice fields is lovely. Thank you.
2020-07-22 16:56:14 +0000 UTC
I dunno man, sitting on a bean bag eating biscuits sounds pretty okay to me.
2020-07-22 16:55:08 +0000 UTC
Honestly the main reason why I even consider getting a driver's license is so I can drive through the Japanese countryside...
