The Most DANGEROUS Situation I've Faced in Japan | Patreon Exclusive Video

There's over 50+ exclusive videos right here on the Abroad in Japan Patreon; from blooper reels and outtakes, to videos chilling out with Natsuki and Ryotaro, to creepy stories - like the time someone stole my video by quite literally re-enacting it word for word(?!?)

However, as these videos are tucked away on the “Posts” page, there’s a good chance you may have missed them! Which sucks, given I suspect many of you guys would actually be keen to watch them.

So for this week, in place of Film Friday, I’m going to list off the TOP 15 must-watch Abroad in Japan Patreon exclusive videos for you below and hopefully you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find a video that piques your interest!

After you’re done watching this week’s episode, have a scroll down the list and see what you can find.

How I Learned Japanese: 2 Years in Detail

Thrust into my job as English teacher with no Japanese knowledge, for my first two years in Japan I studied harder than ever before. As someone who wasn’t great academically and had always failed at learning languages, I had little self confidence or optimism that I’d be able to converse in Japanese at all. However, after uncovering some invaluable study techniques from friends and quickly seeing results after 6 months, I learned to push myself in a way I never thought was possible. In this video I chronicle those experiences and share tips and tricks for fellow learners of Japanese who find themselves struggling through those tough early years.

8 Lessons I Learned Making Natsuki: The Movie

A brutal, honest look at the nightmarish production of Natsuki: The Movie; my first hour long documentary that took 6 months of filming (on and off) and many months to edit. I’ve made over 200 videos since 2012 and no other video or project I’ve undertaken has come close to this, in terms of teaching me what no to do as a filmmaker. With behind the scenes footage, deleted scenes and outtakes of Natsuki losing mind (along with myself).

26 Traits Japanese Girls Want in a Guy: Outtakes & Bloopers

When my good friend Chiaki and I sat down to work our way through a list of characteristics Japanese girls allegedly want in a guy, it was both eye-opening and disappointing (given my dreadful performance). Some of the best scenes didn’t make the final cut, and as always some of the most fun happened in the outtakes and bloopers!

How I Make Youtube Thumbnails

Arguably the biggest factor in whether a video on Youtube is successful or not is the thumbnail (second only to the title). That small image summarising your video is the difference between 1,000 views and 100,000. So is there a formula for success? Well yes, and in this video we discover what it is. Essential viewing for budding Youtube creators.

The Most DANGEROUS Situation I've Faced in Japan | Patreon Exclusive Video

Comments

Another shrine I love is Hidagokoku shrine in Takayama. It is so beautiful with the bridge and cherry trees. I was totally in love, when we discovered it!

Cathy

Kencho-ji is so stunning! And yes, there are a lot of steps. I went there at the end of March and it was very warm. I remembered that on the last steps a young boy came down and greeted me with a happy "Konnichiwa!" and I was like: Yeah, just a few more steps and I made it! After him his grandparents walked downstairs and just smiled at me. It was a funny situation and the temple is very beautiful :)

Cathy

With regards to the temple question, my favourite temple I visited was Kencho-ji in Kamakura. After seeing Hase-dera and Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu, I noticed on my little map another temple nearby. Behind the temple there's a path which leads to a LOT of steps up to a shrine. This was February, and the place was deserted, except for a lone monk who greeted me and seemed surprised that anybody had found this particular shrine! 🤣 Just a fantastic memory!

I love the haircut! Sleek and clean fade😎

As a new patreon, I'm thankful for this list. As my work lets me, I'll definitely watch each video :) Thank you!

"Patrons" buddy

Claire

It took an hour but it’s done once and for all!

Abroad in Japan

Nice Vid. I just noticed I also have that Philosophy Book, it's quite good.

Gus Elizondo

The Star Wars vid made me wake up my husband I was cracking up lol currently 3:50 am in Wisconsin ;)

I would definitely buy that book ;)

the real question is... did you end up sticking everything down with blutak?

Isaac

Awesome bonus Q&A! Such fun and terrifying experiences, lol. I've made note of Yamadera and Takkoku no Iwaya on my next visit! It looks far more ancient/historic and something from the Heian period than the other temples now surrounded by housing. Are these shrines that weren't burned down and reconstructed?

H J

Nice, my question got featured in the video :) Coincidentally, I recently learned the kanjis for product and made-in-Japan (日本製). Plus, your word association method is quite similar to the one I use to learn the meanings of the kanji (ie. 大人 = "Big Person" ).

rafa UGM

Have you ever thought about selling your photos as prints? I would definitely buy some of those night alleyway photos. They’re so cool! Please look into making those available to buy! 😃 Also I think the diorama blue screen will be great. Even if it ends up looking a little cheesy it’s got charm.

Laura Beaumont

These are the best ever to wake up to, now to figure out where to start first! Lol I've probably seen them (most if not all) but don't mind another in order binge session, which is always welcome. lol Also, coffee. I need a giant coffee before I start anything, of course. Lol And your haircut looks quite dapper, my good sir! 😊✨ Now, for coffee! ☕

Jewel - (Freyja's Konjures)

Thanks Chris! Your content has been clutch during the pandemic for me :)

Chris, if I, with my severe arachnophobia, can survive 1.5 years of Australia (the unofficial national anthem of which is this: https://youtu.be/HmRexWQhs3M), you can survive moving to southern Japan for a change of scenery. : p

Eels

We prefer to be called 'Patronisers'

I haven't gotten my JET placement yet, but I'm hoping for Matsuyama! It seems so great in all the videos I've seen of it.

ShezInJapan

Woohoo! The storied career of the Hot Sauce Assassin™ continues!

Argus9 (Jonathan)

OMG, YOU DRINK COW PISS !!?!?! 😉

Becks

😮

Now my work here is done, I’ll certainly sleep well!

Abroad in Japan

I betrayed Natsuki and got a haircut in Sendai!

Abroad in Japan

You’ve been out , Natsuki haircut ?

Chris, are you really posting this at 3:20 AM Japan time? I'm really glad to see the post, but get some sleep!

Matthew Cirilli

Can you do a video about your favourite beers and sakes? ☺️ Arigato
