*NEW VIDEO* | 10 Things to do Around Tokyo Station | Travel Guide

Hey guys,

I hope you're all having a great week so far.

So we have a new video released today featuring Ryotaro at the top of his game, churning out bizarre phrases and expressions worthy of t-shirt designs. My favourite was undoubtedly his random exclamation of “Discovery!” during the opening minutes of the video.

Today I’d planned to release the final episode of Journey Across Japan, but I ended up switching it around with Sunday’s Tokyo Station travel guide episode, as I realised I needed a bit more time to finish up editing a chaotic sword fight sequence (action lurks behind every corner on the Abroad in Japan channel).

In 10 Things to do Around Tokyo Station, Risottoro and I eat, drink, shop and even EXERCISE (god forbid) around the station area.

It was fairly interesting for me, as I pass through Tokyo station a staggering amount, but until this whirlwind tour with Ryotaro, I really didn’t know a great deal of places around the neighbourhood. Credit where it’s due to Ryotaro, the man knows his places.

We’re currently exploring producing more travel videos in the Tokyo area, given pretty much 100% of foreign travellers coming to Japan find themselves in the megacity at some point and it can be overwhelming knowing what to do and where to get started. Any of you guys have any thoughts on this? Should we avoid Tokyo and stick to more rural Japan (like we have done until now), or finally turn our sights towards the big city? Let me know your thoughts below guys.

Over the years, I feel like Ryotaro and I have more or less nailed the travel format (which is essentially a poor man’s Top Gear), and though he often puts me through hell - like making me run through a park at 7am in Japanese summer weather (?!) - the videos are always a good laugh to produce.

At the same time, going forward I plan to strike a better balance between travel with Ryotaro, the more traditional sarcastic commentary videos with myself, and general wackiness and absurdity with Natsuki.

With Journey Across Japan out of the way, it’s time to get back to the roots of what made this channel great - which is essentially just me complaining alone in a room about not understanding how to use my Japanese microwave.

Also, now that I’ve also announced Natsuki: The Movie 2 - or something big with Natsuki in it - various Natsuki fans have been enquiring for more details, and in the next Patreon vlog, I’ll be revealing the results of the questionnaire I put to you guys several weeks ago, to help give me some clarity on the project and what people would like to see. Some of the feedback and comments were hilarious, unnerving and exciting and I look forward to sharing them with you in the coming week!

Finally, if you’ve watched today’s video, but still haven’t listened to the Podcast, where we discuss Japan’s terrifying bear problem, be sure to check it out below.

That’s all for now guys, let me know your thoughts on the above in the comments, enjoy the rest of the week and I can’t wait to get the final Journey Across Japan episode out on Sunday! See you then.
Chris

well then, you better start planning another round of JAJ :>

Genuinely couldn't tell if Ryotaro thought miso cheese and mackerel sake was a good idea or if he was taking the piss. Either way- very entertaining

Haha, tempting but I'd like to think it's the theme tune for JAJ as opposed to the theme tune to the channel!

chris, keep that awesome music from "journey across Japan" in your future videos, dammit!!!

I really enjoyed the video! I think more Tokyo videos would be good for the channel in terms of new viewers what with the rugby World Cup and the Olympics coming up, however as others have said there are so many Tokyo videos on YouTube already it'd be good to focus on lesser covered areas / topics. For example this video had lots of content I'd not seen in other videos and the dynamic between you and Ryotaro is great. From a selfish point of view I personally love seeing the more rural / off the tourist trail places. It was predominantly your videos that led to my husband and I including 5 nights in Tōhoku during our honeymoon in Japan last year. I imagine you'll be able to strike a balance between more Tokyo-based content and the more intriguing places and content that I think sets your channel apart. After all, how many YouTubers have been to where Jesus Christ died in Japan? :P

Hey Chris, I wrote this in a thread below, but wanted to get a sense of other patrons' thoughts on the idea. I just noticed while trolling Google Maps that there is a chain of islands south of Minato, Tokyo, ending with Aogashima Island: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Aogashima,+Tokyo+100-1701,+Japan/@31.1140984,137.8031858,7z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m8!1m2!2m1!1stokyo!3m4!1s0x606ab9f47fa9b07d:0xd7cc98551e98903f!8m2!3d32.4666123!4d139.7636032?hl=en I did a little bit of digging and it seems that most or all of these islands have some sort of attraction to bring people to them, including shrines, shops, and other local establishments. There's a ferry system that goes to each island from Minato so they seem easy to get to. This seems like it'd be a great middle-ground between people who want more Tokyo videos and more videos of the countryside. Just imagine standing on Aogashima, an island of under 200, staring southward at nothing but the sea, the sky, and the horizon! Might be some great content hidden on these islands. :)

the ideal on Tokyo guide is great, however I think it needs a bit more details like prices? I mean if even Ryotaro says that "how luxury we are?" it is probably a bit pricey guide. Having cheaper options would be a good guide

Have to say, I would love if you could get some of the original style back. The first 10 or so videos were superb, I'm glad I subbed to you so early. Maybe the nostalgia value couldnt be recreated though, although it could be hilarious to do some more videos like the original ones while you travel Japan. Complain about some weird hot tub or some shit like that? Could work i dont know, i dont even know why im commenting to be honest, kinda odd.

Would love to see you do more stuff in Tokyo! I know you’re not much of a city guy so it’ll be a bit of hell but if you can survive cycle across Japan, you can survive Tokyo haha.

I hope you will pursue what is of most interest to you and your passions. Yes, making an audience happy is important to a small extent, but you can never make everyone happy and I think you will only be satisfied ultimately if you are pursuing your dreams for the channel and the things that fulfill you.

I laughed out loud when that guy turned out to be Swedish, and he did indeed have a satisfyingly Swedish accent. I expect more random Swedish encounters awaits Chris in the future.

Your big, bold, new cinematic travel stuff and the Journey Across Japan series has been epic. But as a long-time fan I have to admit I do miss your older, shorter videos rambling about various aspects of Japanese life and the Japanese language. Obviously the podcast still covers this side of things which is great but it would be good to have these odd little snippets back! Oh, and there are plenty of other vloggers covering Tokyo. It would be great to get your take on the place of course but I do enjoy seeing all the other more obscure parts of Japan.

Yeah makes sense to cover some hidden or less well known districts in Tokyo, like Shimokitazawa and Nakano Broadway. Barely any foreign tourists visit the latter even though it's like Akihabara but good.

Abroad in Japan

I really enjoyed both the video and the podcast! A few weeks ago, I couldn't believe it when you actually recorded running into one of those much-vaunted Swedish fans, with a satisfyingly Swedish accent, and this week I really couldn't believe it when your hairdresser turned out to know Ryotaro! As for future videos: I'd be interested in further Tokyo videos, especially if they explore lesser known neighbourhoods and as long as they don't take too much time away from videos exploring the countryside, because there's so much adventure there! Videos of you sitting in a room may sound less appealing, but knowing you, you'd turn them into wonders of snark mixed with education, so I'd watch them :).

I think that focuing on Tokyo is a good idea. The olympics is happening in less than a year and it would be helpful for people getting ideas on what to do or where to go. My younger brother is there right now performing in a tournament and I had to make him a map and describe places to him where he could get his money out , which stations he can use etc. He's going to be playing table tennis in the paralympics and he can't wait! Maybe you could do a video about the ever improving accessibility options in japan from trains to shop entrances? (he's in a wheelchair)

Chris Hunter

I love videos of rural areas. There are millions of travel vlogs of Tokyo since as you said everyone goes there. I like seeing other parts of Japan that aren't Tokyo. It makes your videos special to see different places all over Japan and it always gives us ideas where to travel in Japan on our 6 Month trip next year (we will live in Fukuoka, so Videos in the south are especially appreciated, an area you aside from journey across Japan pretty much avoid.) Here's an idea where you could go: the Yufuin floral village. It's in a beautiful onsen town near Beppu which probably as you know is another big onsen town and that is right next to oita. So the region is definitely worth a visit and a video. I tell you! Yufuin! Look it up. It's amazing. It's in the shadow of a very very cool looking volcano. Another video I would like to see is actually near Tokyo, which is the isu peninsular. My Japanese teacher told me that all the people from tokyo go there for their holidays, so it probably also is very special. Yet ANOTHER video idea would be Yakushima, an island in the very very VERY south, which is a national park with a forest that inspired princess mononoke. The nature there needs to be stunning. I think you are far from done from exploring rural Japan, and focusing the videos only on the big city now would be a shame. There are enough video producer out there who do that...

I love seeing the videos that are in more rural areas and off the beaten path. Has more of a Lonely Planet thing going for it. I'd love to see Oita, which is the sister city to where I live. That said, I look forward to anything and everything.

I think focusing on Tokyo a bit would be a nice change of pace. But the major areas like Shibuya have been done to death. What about some videos on the lesser-traveled neighborhoods of Tokyo? You've talked about Ueno in the past, for instance, and it'd be great to learn about some of Tokyo's other districts from you.

Argus9 (Jonathan)

Watched the video and listened to the podcast, good as always! I'm glad to hear that you are thinking about returning to the older less "professional" style of video. I personally enjoy the more rural areas in your videos, but I think you should do whatever you enjoy because then the video will be that much more fun to watch.
