Where Should You Stay in Japan? | Patreon Vlog

Hey guys,

I hope you’ve all had a great weekend.

So we have a new Patreon vlog out today focussing on accommodation/where to stay in Japan. It answers all the big questions such as:

Sorry it’s taken this long; originally it was supposed to be a simple Q&A, but I’ve been adding more and more to the episode throughout the past week, such as the montage at the end video and the hotel room tour in Kyoto. But hopefully you’ll all be able to learn something new from watching it.

 JOURNEY ACROSS JAPAN

These last few months Journey Across Japan episodes have been coming out on Sundays, however given tonight is the finale of Game of Thrones, I realised it may be safer to postpone it a few days so the view count doesn’t get completely decimated by millions spending their evening watching the show (myself included).

The next instalment will be out in the coming days, where we pass through the ramen-filled city of Fukuoka and part ways with Ellen!

ABROAD IN JAPAN PODCAST

In recent weeks numerous people in Tokyo have caught sight a few scams in places such as Akihabara - and I myself witnessed one first hand. With that in mind, we dedicated this week’s Abroad in Japan Podcast to discussing 4 common scams to avoid in Tokyo and it’s definitely worth a listen if you’re planning on visiting Japan sometime in the near future. After the release of the Podcast, listeners sent in stories and experiences that’ll be sharing in another upcoming episode, suffice to say we heard of one horrific story where a couple were drugged and extorted out of thousands of dollars.

In particular though folks, be incredibly wary when travelling around Roppongi and Shinjuku at night, as both areas are infamous for their shady bars with notorious practices.

PATREON DISCORD

Up until about two weeks ago I didn’t know what Discord was. And yet in the last two weeks, I’ve spent tons of hours on there chatting with you guys in real-time on the chatrooms. It’s been a lot of fun and a great way to get folks sharing stories, tips and experiences amongst the community.

If you haven’t accessed the Abroad in Japan Discord yet, check out my last post on Patreon, where I detailed what it is, how to switch it on, and why it’s definitely worth diving into. It’s like the 24 hour online pub you always wanted (except you have to bring your own drinks).

That’s all for now guys, I’ll be announcing the next Patreon Vlog Q&A topic in the coming days! Have a great start to the week!

(And in case any of you are wondering, yes I do think series 8 of Game of Thrones has been a bit of a let down. It’s a real shame the show runners felt the need to rush through it all so quickly after years of building up to this. Nevertheless, I’m pretty gutted to see the show come to an end; I don’t think I’ve ever immersed myself in a fictional world on this scale before. Bring on the finale).

BTW, if you're travelling by yourself and want to see what Japanese home life is like, I'd recommend homestay.com; cost affordable and you'll get exposure to parts of Japanese life you won't otherwise see.

my wife and I stayed at 9 hours (capsule hotel) during our honeymoon. It was a memorable part of our trip. Also one of the worst night's sleeps I ever had.

Enjoyed the video. I was looking for something exactly like the Osmo Pocket, so when I saw this I immediately went and researched, and did indeed end up buying one. Thanks!

Perfect timing. I bought tickets to Tokyo a few days ago

Thank you so much for answering my question. Greatly appreciate it!

Regarding luggage, there's another option I found useful during an impromptu stop in Takayama when I had a backpack almost as big as myself, and all the big lockers in the station were gone. Some of the luggage transport companies like Yamato (look out for the logo with the black cat on a yellow background) let you store luggage for the day at their branches. Which at least in Takayama were just across the road from the station. Definitely seemed a good option if you have truly massive bags and the big lockers are all taken.

Thank you for including my comment, I'll probably opt for just hanging out a bit in a Book and Bed! Their beds do look like shipping crates.

I was tempted to buy dji osmo pocket when it first came out, because let's face it, it is just a shiny new small gadget. Then I looked at the discarded pile of technology sitting on the bookshelf and came to realization that I am not a vlogger and have no intention of becoming one in the near future.

I used the book and bed place in between a 5am flight arrival and meeting my real estate later that afternoon. It was great to have a shower, some hot tea/soup and a snooze after being wrecked from the flight. So while I can't comment on it for staying the night I would definitely recommend it for those weird in between times when you need somewhere to chill and compose yourself.

Great vlog! Man, i really feel spoiled with this one, i wasn't expecting 16 minutes! Regarding AirBNB, personally, my experience is that airbnb's are great if you are intimate enough with whomever you are travelling with that you are okay with cheaping out. For example, me and 3 other mates did a single-room airbnb with 3 double beds, and it was so cheap we kept it as a luggage storage room when we went out of tokyo(20 pounds per night ca). A video in which you explore different living options might be an idea for the future as well, maybe going "up the price range" or just discussing possibilities. I have a lot of experience with using airbnb(and flipkey, a lesser known competitor) as well as photos and prices, if you need material or further thoughts for something like that.

I was thinking that!

Great vlog. I used Airbnbs only on a 2 week visit around Tokyo and Kyoto and they were brilliant - no issues at all and very reasonably priced. Beware though... Japanese are the masters of photography and know how to make their apartments look like spacious penthouses when in reality they are pretty compact!

The one in Aomori is called Hoshino Resort Oirase Keiryu and I second the recommendation - it was absolutely amazing. Book it with the buffet dinner as well. Not cheap but so worth it. If you're only there for one night, check the timings for the outdoor onsen - it has men/women/coed hours and you need to take a little bus there. Worth going at night.

aha - I'm booked to stay in one of those 'book bed' places later in the year. I've stayed in similar (non-book) cabin/pods elsewhere and found them to be pretty comfortable, despite looking like a plywood coffin!

Just to add to what you said in the video, in my experience not only can you leave luggage in hotels after you check out, you can also leave before you check in - if you happen to arrive in a new city before check-in time.

We had a scammer at one of the large temples in tokyo. Offering "free" prayer beads after which he asked for a donation to the temple. All "official" as he wrote it in a book. Total scam of course, as all temples of any size have a shop with much better goods. Still, five weeks and it was the only time someone tried anything. Go to most other countries you could be losing count in that time
