Hey guys!
So this is it; TODAY IS THE DAY the Abroad in Japan Patreon has finally integrated DISCORD.
For everyone who knows what Discord is, you’ll likely be delighted and relieved that months of repeatedly poking and prodding me to launch a Discord has finally led me to do it.
For everyone that doesn’t know what Discord is (a camp I was firmly in up until a week ago), I’ll do my best to explain it quickly and eloquently:
DISCORD is essentially a cross between a forum, a bloody good chat room and a 24 hour tavern where you can sit hunched over a bottle and exchange conversation with the world.
It’s clear that whilst Patreon is great for posting vidoes and photos, sharing news and connecting with you guys in the community tab, it’s not the easiest place for everyone to be able to chat with each other. This has always been a shame given the fantastic community of likeminded folks we have on here, and all the untapped wisdom we’ve struggled to share.
Through the Abroad in Japan Discord you can easily post your questions or share your stories with others on the dedicated forum pages and chat in real time.
From topics such as learning Japanese and working in Japan, to passing on travel tips to upcoming travellers, you’ll be able to get all the answers you need from myself and fellow Abroad in Japan Patrons from around the world, anytime of the day.
And once we have it up and running and everyone is on board, I'll be able to fix a certain time during the week where I'll make myself available to chat in real time and answer questions.
As Discord is integrated into Patreon, it does mean it’s an exclusive group. The only requisite is you’re an Abroad in Japan Patreon - which if you’re reading this already, means you’ve already won that round.
All you need to do to access it is enable the Discord App in Patreon settings. It takes about 30 secs to do, and I’ll quickly tell you how below.
STEP ONE:
Go to Profile -> Patreon Settings (you’ll need to do it on Desktop Patreon not the App)
STEP TWO:
Go to the tab for Apps -> App Integrations: Discord -> Connect
Done!
If you have a Discord it’ll automatically connect you into the server. When you open Discord the Abroad in Japan server will be loaded and you’ll be ready to go.
- If you’re new to Discord (as I was), you’ll quickly need to make an account - but once again once that’s done, it’ll all be setup and ready to go automatically.
IN case you ever leave the server you can hop back in at the link below:
Note: You’ll only see the full server & forums once you’ve connected your Patreon to Discord!

If any of you have any problems though, let me know in the comments below so myself or anyone who’s a Discord Pro can help you out!
Looking forward to chatting with you all in real time there!

UPCOMING PATREON VLOG
In other news, apologies for the delay on this week’s Patreon vlog guys; as I mentioned it’s an Accommodation special discussing hotels/airbnb/ryokans in Japan.
I asked you guys to send in your questions for the vlog, which I’ll be answering in the video and it’s shaping up to be a great video that’ll answer questions such as:
But the main reason I delayed it by a week is that once again, I find myself in Tokyo this weekend staying in a hotel and I figured it’d be worth filming the hotel room and giving you all a tour in the video.
Thanks for your patience though folks - it’ll be up at the start of the week.
And it’s still not too late to send in your questions for the accommodation vlog - I’ll be sure to check the comments below.

THIS WEEK ON ABROAD IN JAPAN
For those that missed the last Journey Across Japan episode, we finally found ourselves arriving on the shores of Kyushu and were able to turn the arduous journey through rice fields and a depressing never-ending tunnel, into a Japanese language learning extravaganza. Definitely check out “How Much Japanese Can You Learn in a Day?” if you missed it.

In the next episode of Journey Across Japan - which I’m currently frantically editing whilst drinking Nespresso - we arrive in Fukuoka, city of ramen, and say goodbye to my friend Ellen who’s joined us on our travels since Hiroshima and shamelessly exploited me as a tour guide.
And finally in this week’s Podcast, Pete and I discuss if foreigners can ever truly be Japanese (short answer: no), as well as a bold plan to get Natsuki to stop smoking for a potential upcoming documentary. Have a listen on your way to work, or in-between studying or exercising.

Hopefully between the Discord and the above content, there’s enough to keep you guys busy until the vlog and the next video!
For now though, I hope you’ve all had a great end to the week - bring on the weekend.
