Road Trip to Natsuki | Patreon Vlog | *Watch Now*

Hey guys!
I hope you've had yourself a pleasant weekend.

So I've finally escaped the chaotic clutches of Tokyo and have arrived in rural Yamagata to catch up with Natsuki for a few days.

The video is now up! You can watch the vlog of my journey here with a brief cameo from Natsuki and his mouthwatering cheesy chicken dish:

Watch Road Trip to Natsuki: https://youtu.be/ajINbujMtT8

I say cameo, because Natsuki will be appearing again (for much longer) in next week's vlog where we'll be answering your questions and giving you a tour of a ryokan (a traditional Japanese inn) which we're both staying at for the night. (We decided to catch up in style for once, as usually our meet-ups revolve around sitting at a bar for 4 hours beatboxing and rapping).

Thanks for sending in all the awesome questions; I answered as many as I could in between drinking coffee, stalking cats and freezing on mountain tops.

Be sure to send in your questions below for the upcoming Patreon vlog with Natsuki at the Ryokan, but for now folks, I'll let the vlog do the talking!

Enjoy!

Chris

Just wanted to say thanks for filming and sharing this trip, it was enjoyable to watch. Hope you'll consider doing similar again in the future!

Question for Natsuki (and to yourself if you would like to answer, Chris) : what are your favourite British comedy series? Also, I’d just like to add that the ‘stories’ channel would be perfect for more road trip vids, random ramblings, reading hate mail (I bloody LOVED the previous ones!) and keeping the original AiJ channel for your beautifully produced, informative vids (and of course the remaining segments of the cycle).

Hi Vanessa - it was Kiraranishi Park just south of Niigata! And my favourite volcano is either Mount Chokai where I used to live in north Japan (and featured in the vlog above) or Mount Sakurajima in Kagoshima as it's still actively smoking away throughout the day!\

Abroad in Japan

The anime Re:Zero has the main make character named Natsuki! Every time they call his name I laugh a little.

Chris, where is the bouncy outdoor park from your abandoned tunnel video with Joey? Also, what is your favorite volcano? I am a volcano lover myself.

Vanessa Walsh

Natsuki! I was happy to hear you have an interest in baseball! I am a big baseball (San Francisco Giants) fan and plan on going to a Yomiuri Giants game in May. Any advice for my first Japanese baseball game?

Vanessa Walsh

Natsuki, judging by Chris's singing (and disclosed dancing) on the last blog would you ever join forces to create a super-group. It'd be a mix of 80s, Sid vicious and sick moves im sure... Also love the videos, keep it up! Always makes me happy to see an Abroad in Japan notification!

Natsuki, what do you like most about Chris?

Chris, I've been interested in how your Japanese sounds to native speakers, esp since your last podcast where you mentioned you don't always pronounce Japanese words as the Japanese would. Can you please ask Natsuki what he thinks about your accent and how well you speak Japanese?

Michael Moore

I love the road trip videos. Yes to more! 😃 The answer about Risottoro being the man left behind was perfect and I laughed heartily! I could totally picture him battling until the end.

Laura Beaumont

This may not be a Natsuki-related question, but I was wondering if Chris has ever considered doing movie reviews on his channel. I’m severely into Satoshi Kon thanks to the Q&A with Dōgen.

Absolutely worth signing up to Patreon just for this. <3

Really pleasant video! Enjoy your time there! A road trip style series would be interesting.

Great video! The style is super cool! The constant change in scenery keeps people hooked just like your main content :)! Sorry I missed the live stream I was busking... whats busking and the music scene like in Japan :)?

Hey chris, love the videos as always, and... I got a quick question for ya. Do you have much interest in playing computer games, and if so, which are your favourite? If not, favourite TV show and why? If Natsuki is there when you answer this, could you get his responses to the same questions too please?

Not Natsuki related, but as you have been a JET and been around many different JETS from all walks of life I was wondering if you could help me out with this one. I've applied for the JET program and will hopefully be hearing back in the next week about my application result. I'm currently working as a software engineer and at this point have at least a year and a half of experience. I could currently move and work in Japan with my current career if I sole Japanese... But I don't. Not yet anyway (working on that). If I was to except my application (assuming I get through) for the JET program it would stunt my career progression by at least a year and getting back into it after doing English teaching for a year will be difficult. My main reasons for wanting to do the JET program is to see more of Japan, live in the country side (which working as a software developer probably wouldn't be an option), learn more of the language (get to an N3 or N2 level preferably) and do I job that I would hopefully find fulfilling. Reasons for not taking part in the key program would be better career progression, better salary (with two years experience my salary could be almost twice that of a JETs), will give me more time to travel Europe and other regions and still have the potential to move and work there eventually. I know it would be possible to get a job in Japan as a software developer without Japanese, but I know from my own experience, after a day's work, finding the motivation to study another language is difficult, especially if you are spending your whole day learning (which is 90% of a software developers job). I understand this is a little long winded and a good conundrum to be in, but I'm still finding the design difficult to make. If there is anyone here or you know anyone who has been in this position, your input would be much appreciated. Cheers.

Loved this road-trip style video! After the necessity of coffee was achieved, I watched it first thing this AM in San Francisco and was surprised (nay—pleased!) to see my question made it in. And equally pleased with your answer. I'm certain that if you found yourself inexplicably living the same day over and over again for all eternity, Osaka's nightlife and Pete Donaldson wouldn't fail to ward off the throws of existential insanity.

Has Natsuki managed to cut down on his crazy working hours and get more time for his hobbies?

Eels

Now that the vlog released I do have a pleased weekend :3
