Why I'm Not Abroad in Japan

Hey guys,
Hope you've all had a great first week to kick off 2019!

As always I'll let the vlog do the talking - and as requested, leave me your questions in the post below for next week!

WATCH: https://youtu.be/uHdUi46hugM

And please forgive me for my stupid error; Scafell Pike is the tallest in ENGLAND not the UK. Ben Nevis is of course, the tallest in the UK!

And for those that missed this week's Podcast, Pete and I debate the usefulness of New Year's Resolutions, reveal resolutions sent in by listeners (and our own), and discuss a potential sequel to Natsuki the movie - and what it could possibly be about.

Why I'm Not Abroad in Japan

Comments

Chris, thanks for the update. My wife and I love your videos and think you're doing a great job. I'm sure you feel exhausted about coming up with new ideas for content. Really if you're making sarcastic videos with beautiful scenery, we will watch. I guess I'm simple minded, but life is buys enough. Your videos are a joy.

IMHO Moving back to the UK and making an "Abroad in Europe/UK" would be a bad idea... the UK are already heavily covered by the BBC, Channel 4, and even vloggers all around Youtube. I really don't see the point... What makes the channel of Chris so interesting is specifically him IN Japan with his British sarcasm & derision in a totally foreign context, and discovering different things. It will not be really the same once back in a country where everyone is like him... But that's just my two cents :-)

The JAC series is not going to be finished is it? LOL. Agree you should do videos in UK. Based on all the UK based Netflix shows, your country is a very popular destination and Americans love shows about it. You have a loyal following. You should move back to the UK and do an Abroad in Europe /UK series

Hello Chris! I am a new subscriber and new to this as you are the first person I have ever actually used this site for. In a few older videos you went on a date in suicide forest, and also talked to a friend of yours about pickup lines, and my question is: how has your dating life been in Japan? When I was in Japan in October I had a ton of people look at me and say hi, but never could muster up the courage to talk to anyone really. Have you had a decent dating life, or have you been staying away from it while doing all your amazing videos?

Rob Biberhofer

two of the things why i love your videos: 1) interesting stuff about japan, 2) sarcastic stuff - so, please show us more of your signature blend of the two! Also, I would be interested in "Japan Abroad" - so how do you see "Japan" in the UK (or possibly Europe, if you travel around) . Like, is the japanese food any good in the UK? Is there japanese stuff sold in the UK that you wouldn´´ t have ever imagined or are surprised or baffled by? (wouldn´ t it be crazy if they sold natto around the corner?) - In short: How about Japan´ s influences on the UK, you know, other than the last samurai, sushi and hello kitty

i learned using chopsticks rather easily by just "sticking" the bottom one *permanently* between thumb and pointer, and only moving the top ony, sort of like scissors, but instead of cutting, you grab stuff. really quick to get used to.

Good evening Chris. Concerning a serious title for Natsuki 2 the movie, what about "Natsuki : A Life in Smokes"?

Love the weekly vlogs mate <3 This year's plans sound good, but do take care of yourself ;) As for a question: I've been to Japan twice now, and what really confused the hell out of me was how Japanese people find restaurants. My gf took me to many restaurants, but very few of them were located like we westerners are used to: just along the streets on ground level. One restaurant we visited was accessible only through a loading area of some company, through an elevator in the back, up on the 6th floor (excellent food though). In another we just went to the basement of one of the huge Marunouchi buildings next to Tokyo station, and there were about a dozen restaurants there. I was wondering, if there are ways for tourists to find good restaurants in the urban jungle of the bigger cities.

Can you please promise us that when you do eventually decide to leave Japan you won't call the event Jexit

Jonathan Turmaine

Haha, if had Jon, it certainly would have made the video.

Abroad in Japan

I guess that jet fighter never came back :(

I love being apart of your Patreon community. My question for you is: Do you ever get tired of talking/vlogging about Japan? You're like a modern David Attenborough. You could talk about almost any topic and I think you would pull it off. Japanese history is something that interests me, personally, however it's not something I know much about. Thank you for bringing us into your creative process!

Chris now that you are back to visit friends and family my question is as followed. What do your parents think now that your a successful youtuber and what did they think when you just started it out. What advice would you give budding youtubers regarding their potential conversation regarding their possible Youtube career.|

Glad to see you taking a break, it looks pretty nice despite being winter and the lack of tourists has got to be a plus. My bit of the UK near the tip of the south east is pretty much flat fields of cabbages and gradually decaying towns that smell faintly of desperation (or possibly urine, its easy to confuse the two). Anyway my question to you is more of a practical skills thing - How the bloody hell do you successfully use chop sticks? Any tips or even pointers to other resources that you might recommend would be greatly appreciated as my attempts to date have been a spectacular fail!

Jonathan Turmaine

When you mentioned the news article, you said Japanese people think we visit places for scenery rather than historical value. My question is, would you go to the Chinatown in Nagasaki, Japan's oldest Chinatown, this February to prove them wrong?

Xenin

Wow that lake looks beautiful. Good to see you’re enjoying a hard earned vacation. As for my question “when do you think you’ll finally get to meet Ken Watanabe?”

Do you think you could throw together a video in your usual style but for somewhere in England :)? Honestly I think that’d be pretty dope!

Now that you're in the UK, you could do a comparison of UK japanese food vs japanese food in Japan. Im sure viewers around the world who havent been to Japan wonder how much better the food tastes in Japan. When we tried ramen in the Netherlands, it was so disappointing that my bf said on the spot he doesn't want to go to Japan anymore (note: japanese food is 70% of the reasons why he wants to go there and if i don't convince him that food there is much much better than crap we eat here, i will never get to see Japan :( ). Help! ó.ò

Can you explain about resources and advice about apartment hunting and moving in Japan. I'm changing apartments here later this year, and I'm wondering the best way to make all my stuff. How did you move your things to Sendai from your previous apartment?

What are your recommendations for travelling in Japan during Golden Week? Stay in Tokyo? Try to get to lesser known cities?

Whose videos (on youtube or elsewhere) do you personally find inspiring and why?

Katherine Donaldson

Who is your favorite Japanese historical figure?

rafa UGM

I'm glad to see you're all smiles. :-) I was wondering if you were back in Japan yet and I see that you're not now. There's one question answered already. As for topics or questions we can put forth, perhaps do a video on how INCONVENIENT Japan can be. Everyone always talks about how great the stores are and the trains, but a video about less happy shiny things could be refreshing. I've been traveling to Japan yearly now, and there ARE things that some foreigners would find inconvenient, like ATM usage times, walking a kilometer in the rain to the train station, the lack of cheese, etc. I know you've mentioned these things in individual scenarios, but an all in one video with some new things could be fun if done in a light-hearted and not malicious manner.

How do you think natto would pair with Worcestershire sauce or marmite?

rafa UGM

Definitely has to be another hate comments video, love those! So funny! Still laughing about “Dao Pham” haha 😂

Fran Batchelor

well I feel shamed as a yorkshire lass, I haven't had natural sunlight on my skin in about five days. My japanese teacher uses the bloody peak district and surrounding areas in so many examples and it's a bitch to remember how to spell in katakana considering I can barely spell sheffield. Anyway as for the patreon channel, little unedited non-scripted vlogs like these are always welcome - I personally would enjoy seeing some outtakes and behind the scene stuff of how you decide to film the things and the way you do. Not everyone's interest but just my two cents! Anyway hope you managed to navigate the dales without the need of an interpreter.

Do you plan to stay in Japan forever? If not, where will you be abroad in next?

Could you talk a bit more about the aesthetics vs. historical/cultural significance question from the newspaper article? Personally I think it's about 50/50 when it comes to choosing places to visit but interested to hear other opinions from travellers

Happy New Year, Chris! Not much of a question but I noticed that your 'Sake Vending Machine' video with Kim Dao and Chris Okano is not on your YouTube channel anymore. Sorry if this was already addressed before but could you tell us why it was removed/hidden? I really love your videos. Whenever I finish binge-watching your videos, I just watch them again from the start. 😁

So beautiful. I live in the UK and same as you, I pretty much rule out the UK as somewhere that could possibly be interesting or beautiful. Thanks for showing otherwise haha. Living in London I forget what fresh air and beautiful scenery is

Sian Smith

What would you do if you never made it as a youtube star after you finished the jet program?would you stay in japan or move back to England?

Happy New year. I want to see Japan as a holiday destination, but I have a particular intrest in Folklore can you give me some direction ore destinations fore this?

Sordan

What do you think about the different mentalities around Japan?.................................... I've got friends from the Tokyo area, Kansai and Kyushuu, and they all seem to have different mentalities. From the tokyo area people just seem so damn stuck up. Including my friends. But Kansai and Kyushuu people just seem to be generally Genuinely friendly and comedic.

Glad to see you having a well deserve rest. Please remember to give yourself adequate time off, particularly from screen use. Self-employed people can often be their own boss from hell! Don't burn yourself out, lad. But what a lovely place to be. My uncle used to be a warden on Lake Windermere. His job has manning speed boats and getting shat on by angry injured swans. Since us Brits (and other gaijin) have a reputation of not knowing a whole lot about Japanese history, it'd be great if you made a film about the life of a Historical figure. Why not go all out and do a period drama scene? Bonus points if it stars Ryotaro as a monk.

I’m so glad that you’re focusing on your mental (and physical) health, Chris! Also, did the Highlands sink? 😂 I’m kidding! I know you meant England. I also know that a lot of people outside of the UK may not know the difference England and the UK. ✌️ Also, thanks for keeping up with the podcast! It helps me through my workouts.

Thetypebeast

I've been in the UK for 4 years now and I've barely been anywhere. Being in the south just sucks you in. On to the question; have you thought about what documentaries you'll be doing this year? I hope the rest of your time in the UK is stress free and you can recharge for the amazing 2019 that's waiting for you in Japan! Xx

Milena Raschia

What do you know now about YouTube that you wished you knew 5 years ago?

Hey Chris, what are some ideas you have for YouTube videos coming out this year?

You came to the North of England and didn't even come for a pint even though I said I'd buy :'(

WraithBringer

Please please please do a video shouting out and taking the piss out of the hate comments you receive on your videos, you haven’t done one in ages and I miss it 😂

"Why I'm not Abroad in Japan" I knew it! He was Chad from Seattle this whole time! #exposed
