INSIDE a Japanese Log Cabin | Feat. Sharla & Pete Donaldson | Patreon Vlog

Hey guys!

I hope you've all had a great start to the weekend.

SO HERE'S A VLOG UPDATE of how things are going on the cycle, as well as a bizarre behind the scenes tour of a log cabin we've all been staying in on a mountain overlooking Kobe. (It's like a poor man's Cribs presented by Pete Donaldson).

As well as the 11 videos that have come out over the last fortnight charting our Journey Across Japan, Tokyo Creative recently put up a behind the scenes look at the first leg of our trip.

- Tokyo Creative Behind the Scenes: https://youtu.be/CxxlEDKNIN0

I'm currently halfway through editing a video to put out tomorrow of the next day of our trip. I'm still aiming to do daily videos (sometimes with a day in between); the reason for the lack of videos over the last four days was it pretty intense filming in Kobe, Osaka and Kyoto with Mr Donaldson.

Him and I had waited all year for those few days together in Kansai, and they did not disappoint; from monkeys and feral cats, to retro video games bars and Kobe Beef - the videos of what we got up to will be out next week and they're already some of my favourite videos of the entire trip so far!

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the trip so far though guys! It's thanks to you all that this epic adventure has been possible, and when we end the year with a 40 part video series charting the journey across Japan, just remember that if it wasn't for you, it would never have existed in the first place. You made it happen!

Now bring on the weekend! (Albeit not for me, I've got a 40km cycle tomorrow).
Chris

I'm worried for Christ. No Journey Across Japan videos for a week. Anyone knows what's happening?

Just signed up today! Cant wait to see more stuff from you Chris :)

I love all of your videos. Your trip across Japan is amazing. Keep snarky!

The Journey Across Japan has been great so far -maybe you should try something like this every year? The longer form plays to your strengths i think. You are shining more and more as an auteur.

Thoroughly enjoying the series. I think using the challenges to augment more barren sections of the route is probably a good idea, but, the videos have still been interesting and entertaining so far. Please don't wear yourself out. I know this is for the channel and it's not just a personal trip, but this seems like something you've wanted to do for a while. So please don't worry about the daily videos! Anything is good.

The trip has been exciting to watch so far! If Natsuki the Movie was the last watershed moment for the channel, then this is the next. Great work by you and everyone else involved so far!

I'd personally rather you have more time for fun experiences on the trip / sleep than a video a day. Don't melt your brain editing until the wee hours, coffee and energy jelly only goes so far! You're doing a great job so far. Bigger challenges are fine so long as the're not every episode. One very minor thing that my wife and I both agree on is that a bit more footage of the actual cycle would be nice (something from the side every now and then?). Perhaps extra cycling footage at the end once the video is 'over' for a minute or two, or an extra bonus clip outside of the main video so it doesn't break up the pacing? You're going through some pretty places, but I sometimes don't feel we've seen them enough? Once again, you're doing an amazing job!

For sure take time to enjoy the journey, get the rest you need. Maybe an every other day video instead of shooting for dailies? I doubt anyone would be upset (and if they are, they aren't very cool). Challenges could be less often too if needed. Delegate some more of the stuff if you can, you have support, use them. :)

Out of curiosity, why do you insist on editing yourself? If you have so much crew with you, why didn't you get someone who can do it for you on the go? Seems a bit mad to try and do everything yourself tbh.

Love the series so far. I personally not fussed with the challenges and cycling parts, I enjoy either. Does have a bit of Top Gear style going for it which is fun. As you have mentioned, editing seems to be the main slowdown. If you prefer to do it yourself, it might be worth considering pre-editing one whole leg at a time then releasing that the following Mon-Thurs with Fri or Sat being the catchup/non-cycling episode which can be more casual/combing multiple days into one video. This would take pressure off doing more realtime releases and also give a bit of a regular schedule with set days off. Anyway, happy to get as many episodes as we get and will continue to enjoy the series.

And Risottoro shall now be known as Ryenteros...

As most people stated - your videos have been a hilarious pleasure and I love watching them (and yes, I'd love some more scenery, but where there is none, you can't make it magically appear). As most of the guys here, I am worried about your health as well. Stay safe, mate. I think most of us are happy to see "where our money goes". But I also believe that many of us also want you to have an unforgettable time, a journey to many destinations on many levels and a trip which makes you a bit healthier - rather than killing you. ;-) That, in the end, wouldn't get us the videos we crave for, neither... And if the videos stream until a while after the cycle, it prolongs the fun for everyone included. So - why stress? On that note, take care and for god's sake, ENJOY. Otherwise time will fly by even quicker and you might be shocked on how quick the trip is over. This is one of these projects in life which is unique, so don't forget the pleasure.

Hi Chris, that Pete Donaldson I'd keep an eye on him. Any one who likes hiding under stairs and scaring people must be a bit dodgy Must be a law someware about doing this sort of thing . Sighs are all there likes foolish and wears dodgy football shirts , come on ! Keep to the pod casts you will be a lot safer. Best to all the team and Pete .

I like the challenges, it didn't look like the most exciting scenery (although beautiful, repetitive). Equally if you get some nice mountains and scenery I can happily watch that. Get those Tokyo Creative chaps to earn their keep and help you get some sleep :P No hurry on videos, release them at a rate that allows you to stay healthy and enjoy the ride :)

Wow that's a scary hole there, but the beautiful cabin makes up for it tenfold! Get some rest and am excited to see the next cycling adventure videos and the guests that tag along. PS: Sharla you're so cute! >.

Ditto on health comes first. Including footage of the cycle itself might be more challenging in that there might be the pressure to make it “exciting” and cause more stress on you when editing the footage. I must agree, though, was a little sad that the parts of Japan you cycled through was barely shown. I think try to show more cycling and see how the audience responds. I would trust in your audience and in Japan (scenery and possibilities for unplanned adventure). The video with the highest view count of the series is the mountain of fried chicken one, which was not planned right? Your personality will always shine through and your take on things is uniquely you. Sometimes the most mundane things catch people attention. Would like this cycle to be one of adventure and renewal for you. It is a pleasure as a patron to help support you on this journey.

Don’t worry about the daily vids, get solid rest!

Scott Dier

Congratulations on the trip so far. I really want to try the Black Ramen video now. I had a thought, maybe instead of showing just one day you should try focusing on an entire segment of the cycle. It would allow you to focus more on the cycling and less not he challenges. Believe it or not, I'm now thinking of cycling from Aomori to Tokyo next year but with a road bike. Love the content so far. Keep it up!

Maybe you could add a couple extra minutes of video to make up for the time from the challenges

Love the trip so far! Its ambitious, rambunctious, hilarious, ridiculous! Or simply put, Rascal Bicycle! I like the interaction with the guests, but I also really liked the one where it was just you and we got to see more cycling. Being able to see more of the scenery would be awesome :) Enjoying everything so far, do get enough rest, stay safe!

We hardly ever see you actually cycle, everything else is great! Thank you for your hard work - you must be tired! ;-)

MVR

I do agree that the challenge bit does seem to take up too much time, but again as you said it does depend on the area you are in and what is interesting...Going forward yes I'd like to see more of the cycle itself, but the challenges are fun, so incorporating them is a great idea, but it is a difficult balance. Perhaps making the videos longer like 15 minutes would work? but I've no idea how much more work that would be for you, so yeah, just do what works best I guess. And if we have to wait for a video it's not the end of the world, I know you'll probably be releasing cycle videos a month after your done the cycle even due to the back log, so just make sure you have fun with this too! Thanks Chris, it's been a blast so far.

Adam Penner

Im loving it but maybe the challenges could be a seperate mini video and the cycle stuff seperate? Id watch both for sure. Also any plans to do long timelapse of your gopro along cycle. Much love all the way from Australia.

Challenge or no challenge, the videos have been fun either way. Not much criticism from me other than get some sleep!

We appreciate your hard work and quality contents. You must be exhausted from doing a livestream, making a video for Pateron as well as for your main channel on a single night! Keep up the good work and don't forget to stretch your legs :)

Echoing what others have said on the dietary choices and making sure that you get enough sleep. I'm enjoying the videos, and I'd be glad to watch as many as you make, but I know firsthand that the quality of content we create tends to be better when we're feeling our best. Per the content itself, I like that you're experimenting with styles. Unsurprisingly, I'm still a fan of the high quality drone shots showing the coastline, but (and I say this as someone who doesn't watch vlog content) I'm also digging the more quick and dirty stuff. I'm also enjoying owning an Abroad in Japan jacket before the guy doing the actual cycle, haha!

Maybe you could put the cycling parts and footage that you haven't used on the abroad perspective channel after the cycle is done. Kinda like deleted scenes in a movie. I think it would fit the channel nicely (and can also rake in a bit more revenue). Although it would make sense if you wouldn't want to have anything to do with the cycling afterwards and have a big break.

Are AirBnBs still up and running in Japan? I heard they'd brought in more stringent laws a couple of months ago which made many of them likely to shut down, at least temporarily?

Congratulations Chris it has been great! I have see all videos so far, really fun to watch, great content. Looking forward to the rest of the journey! Good luck!

I agree with all the health conscious commenters! The lack of sleep reminds me of the fact that before the cycle, the idea was a little bit more centered on a vlogging style, and now you say that you like the fact that the videos are a little more "main channel" style, or just polished and professional. I pretty much know nothing about editing, and maybe it would take more time to edit in a way you're unused to, but something a little more traditional, easy vlog style every once in a while could make the flow of videos more interesting AND take off a little editing burden. Anyway, back to the health; I'm tempted to find a way to go into the challenges and rig it so they all say "eat really healthy for the day" for all the rest of the days. It's hard to do but combining the food with the lack of sleep could really make things difficult. And... Sharla is the best.

I loved this vlog update! It really shows what it's like being in that quirky Japanese cabin, and it was great fun not only listening to but also watching Pete (and Sharla is also always lovely). I'm looking forward to more videos with Pete and more videos that focus on the journey (although most of the challenges have been more fun than I could have imagined)!

It’s been a hell of a journey but really rewarding for us, the viewers. Every time the videos show a different take on your daily experience without falling into a routine, monotonous task. I’m really curious to see what you’ll end up producing for Himeji...last May I went there and it was probably one of my favourite places during my journey (that Castle...)

I've been loving the videos so far and can't wait to watch this vlog! But I do worry about how much healthy food and sleep you're getting. Do take good care of yourself!

Nynke de Haas

Overshadowing the cycle? I mean I watch this channel because I'm interested in Japan and I enjoy your hosting, not because I'm a cycling enthusiast - I presume that's most of what what the other million people are here for too. The challenges line up with the travel aspect of this project, they're lighthearted and fun. Also, what's wrong with having a funny challenge heavy video one day and then a slightly more serious informative video another? It's about balance, people. I'll put my soapbox away... I'm running on pure caffeine myself cramming work for my japanese degree into one weekend because I have some other stuff this week. Fun fact, I also managed to shove the phrase 'it was like a magic' on one of my compulsory module assignments where I was told there's no right or wrong answer, so cheers for the inspiration. Also please have a nap and eat more bananas. <3

Hahahahaha, what link! SHHHHHHH Don’t tell Sharla... I agree that the challenges are a bit much, and like to see more of the cycle itself and the places you come across. Also: eat healthier, man. Saturated fat and simple carbohydrates (karaage, pizza pockets, sweet canned coffee, cookies) actually starve your body, and clog your arteries. Gotta get vitamins in you, and you’ll feel less hungry, and stronger. You’d be way better off with rice balls and sushi bento.

Thetypebeast

Hi Chris, loving the vids. As much as I'm sure we all want more videos of the cycle YOU REALLY NEED TO GET MORE REST!!! I'm saying this for a couple of reasons, the most important being that if you keep going with only 5 hours of sleep a day your health is eventually going to nose dive, and none of us want that to happen. Not only that it will quite possibly start to effect the content / quality of your vids. We're patient folks, we wouldn't be supporting you on here if we didn't want to see you doing the things you do, so try and take better care of yourself please.

Mathew Percival

Pete's shirt looks like uncook bacon or some other meat. 😅

Loving all the cycle videos so far, absolutely brilliant. Pete emerging from the secret compartment under the carpet was so funny, can’t stop laughing 😂 Very much looking forward to the upcoming videos with him, big fan of his! Great to see Sharla as well, been following her channel for years. Seeing the cycling videos has actually inspired me to start going to the gym (finally) so 本当にありがとう!Good luck on the rest of the cycle!!

Fran Batchelor

I'm really enjoying the videos and everything that's been put out of the trip so far. Keep it up, you're doing fantastic!
