Journey Across Japan Q&A Hangout | Feat. Sharla | Patreon Exclusive

Hey guys,

I'M ALIVE! Just about.

I hope you've been enjoying the more or less daily videos covering the first week of our 2,000km Journey Across Japan cycle. So far they've been fairly action packed, from witnessing Natsuki do exercise for the first time in 10 years and watching a tiny Japanese girl eat a bowl of food bigger than her own head, to exploring a haunted tunnel and befriending strangers in front of Sake Vending machines, and swearing whilst cycling through the pouring rain.

This week has felt like one big, long master class in mindf*ckery.

- And it's just getting started.

I've spent the last few days wanting to speak to you all in some way, but I'm more than happy to admit it's been a serious struggle. Whilst the cycling the first few days was tough, the real challenge has been producing daily videos and editing them through the night (usually until 5am).

The first week of the cycle my schedule has been:

- Start cycling and filming around 10-11AM

- Finish cycling around 5PM

- Dinner at 6pm

- Edit from 7pm until 3am

- Render and upload from 3am until 5am

- Sleep from 5am until 10am

The good news is, I've become far more efficient at editing in recent days, and being getting more sleep thankfully, but I've come to the conclusion that whilst I'll be able to upload daily for the most part, every 3 or 4 days, I'll need a break in between (like yesterday). That extra day gives me the time to edit more than one video and stay on top of things.

Still, I feel extremely happy with the videos we've been producing this past week - the production quality is far higher than I'd anticipated, but I figured we might as well go all out and make the best genuine Japan travel series ever. Especially as we have the resources at our disposal for the next month and a half to do some incredible things.

Above all though, I hope you guys have enjoyed them and I'm certainly keen to hear your thoughts on what you enjoyed and what you think can be improved!

(As well as the 7 videos this week, there has also been the usual podcasts as we recorded a few in advance, so don't forget to check them out!)

Because there are so many things to talk about; stories, experiences, people, places, I figured rather than make the usual vlog, I'd actually do a Live Hangout tomorrow where you can all join in and send me your questions during the stream. I figured it'd be a lot more fun! (And for those that can't make it, the video will be archived so you can watch it whenever you want).

Joining us on the show is my current guest and fellow co-rider Sharla (in Japan but not in Japan), and she'll also be happy to answer any questions you guys might have as well!

Here's the link to the hangout:

(Important note to $5 tier supporters: this isn't the monthly Ask Abroad Hangout. That will also take place next week!)

I just want to add, I apologise to any of you who've tried to get hold of me this past week; in order to survive the cycle and the mental, all-night editing process, I've had to shut out most of the world (including friends and family who are getting annoyed that I've had to ignore all messages). If I'm not cycling, I'm filming and if I'm not filming I'm editing, but I hope to get on top of it all in the coming days though, so I appreciate your patience!

Looking forward to seeing as many of you tomorrow as possible and enjoy tonight's new video (just released). I apologise for ruining any of your favourite movie scenes. (Particularly Star Wars and Titanic).

All the best guys - and I hope you had an awesome Friday!

Chris

Hi Chris, my partner and I are absolutely loving the series, it's such a great way to experience Japan, and the combination of guests and challenges really help make each video more varied (and it must be more interesting for you as well!); I agree with everyone else, I'm no stranger to insane schedules but please be careful not to wear yourself out! We all love your content (apart from that one bloke, apparently!) and continue to support you so please don't worry if you need longer to edit etc. Your sanity and health is more important and we are happy to wait!

Hi Chris! I really am loving this series! You are doing a great job and the videos are informative and fun at the same time. I love all the collaborations and challenges (I hope mine gets picked along the way)! I would love it if you could should more local foods of all the places where you're staying :) P.S. why don't you try sugar free enegery drinks instead of the sugary coffee??

Sorry Chris, but I have been so disappointed with your cycle across Japan video's especially those with that idiot Joey, and the stupid "challenges" that they are unwatchable, and I am sorry to say I will no longer support you on Patreon. I'll still watch after this load of shit is over on the off chance you go back to what you do best, but I will be freeloading from now on. This should have been a great series. I should have known you weren't going to seriously when you turned up on that mountain bike.

Chris, the cycle videos have been going better than I could have expected. Incredibly entertaining and informative. They also seem to capture the spark that your earlier videos had - that feeling of tagging along on your journeys through Japan. I said that Natsuki the Movie was a milestone moment for the channel, and I feel like we’ve already hit another milestone with the cycle series. I really appreciate all the effort you’re putting in to keep up with the daily upload schedule, but definitely take what time you can to recuperate too. I can’t even imagine how grueling it is to cycle as far as you have so far. Overall - great work on the series so far. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Tip: This series deserve to be remixed later on, like a Christmas/new years special and made all in to a movie, and maybe edit in more map details and drone shorts, to get even more length out of it. It could be like a star wars saga, a 3 movies to rule them all? Anyway, great videos and plz be carefull.

Loving your content for the cycling marathon so far Chris and am amazed at your output both in terms of quality as well as quantity. Please don't burn out though!

Loving the vids you've put up so far Chris, they've been fantastic. I joined your patreon about a week ago and can't wait for the live stream later on today.

I've been really impressed with the quality of the videos so far. Keep up the good work!

Welcome! Click the set reminder so yt will notify you when it gets live. ;)

Videos have been amazing so far! The hard work you’re doing really shows! Keep up the good work but also try and rest more too :) oh, and thanks for getting the “cycle bicycle cycle bicycle” remix stuck in my head for a whole day 😂🙃

I'll need a De'Lorian in order to travel back in time and take part in the stream

@Cath thank you!

Jennifer Lowry

If you click the live stream link, it shows 18 hours before the stream. Oct 20, 10pm JST

Hey Chris, awesome videos so far, I'm really loving what you're putting out. Keep up the good work but more importantly keep up your mental health! We're more than okay with videos that are less than daily if it maintains the quality of the videos and your physical state. Do what you need to do, don't put too much stress on yourself.

Ah I misread, it's 2 hours for both together. Not as bad as I first thought.

Tristan Louet

Chris, the image above has the Sept 29th information - will the stream be Oct 20th at 22:00 JST or Oct 21st? Also that is an insane schedule, please make sure to rest as much as you need to not burn out, physical and mentally!

Jennifer Lowry

Thanks for updating us, Chris! Rest is just as important as everything else!

Thetypebeast

The videos are great quality, so your long nights were definitely not spent in vain. That said, if that daily routine really starts to wear on you by week 3 or so, do take more breaks and sleep longer. We love what you're doing, but we want you to be healthy, too.

Crisu

Use the sauna or steam room for recovery as much as you can to recover those muscles.

Don't burn yourself out, I wouldn't be bothered if the vids came every 3 or 4 days even, that's still very generous.

Chris in all honesty take as much time as you need for the videos. The amount you been producing is beyond human considering how incredibly well done they are. While you may be trying to keep us updated, try to survive the ride first. Good luck.

Awesome this far, can't wait for the rest! Greetings from Norway.

Chris, the date in the mail is wrong, unless you want us to wait 11 months.
