1M SUBSCRIBERS !!! | Patreon Vlog

WE DID IT GUYS!

Almost 6 years to the week the Abroad in Japan channel began, we've hit the jackpot! (Also, in the same week we hit 100m views as well).

A super huge thank you to all of you for your support on this journey; you've been a massive part of this success both as Patreons and viewers.

It's important to point out when we started Patreon two years ago, the channel had around 200,00 subscribers, but I was at the end of my tether, with barely a production budget to produce new videos and a far from optimistic outlook going forward.

Patreon absolutely helped me turn that around; we suddenly had a budget, and I finally realised how much the channel meant to so many people. I pushed ahead and went all in.

Since 2016 we’ve produced over 60 original videos on the Youtube channel, many of which have gone viral and many of which are within range of being broadcast quality.

This year we’ve taken the leap from producing Youtube vlogs to documentary style videos, such as “What Happened in Japan After the Tsunami?” “Japan’s Biggest Gaming Obsession Explained” and of course, “Natsuki: The Movie”.

We’ve been able to get all new equipment from the top of the range GH5 DSLR camera and Sigma Art Lens (18-35mm), to Rode VideoMIC for audio and more recently the Mavic Air drone.

All of this equipment will be put to excellent use on the upcoming mega cycle project - a project funded through Patreon (with additional backing and an entire production team from Odigo Travel).

And finally, we now have THE BIGGEST weekly podcast about Japan (with 30 podcasts to enjoy), with a world class radio DJ (glorious Mr Pete Donaldson) as our co-host and even featured on the iTunes Charts.

I’m immensely proud of our success and to be able to share in it with you all, every step of the way makes it so damn rewarding.

I know I’ve been quiet the last few weeks (which I discuss in the above vlog), but rest assured I've been more or less constantly planning the impending journey across Japan, as well as writing and editing the next videos and podcast.

And from now until the end of the year, it’ll be the busiest four months ever; but I’m incredibly ready to dive into what lies in store, and you’ve got a lot to look forward before the year is out!

As always guys, thanks for watching, listening and supporting Abroad in Japan - and enjoy the vlog and recent content, which I’ve listed below in case you’ve missed anything out.

Have a terrific Saturday,

Chris

I will try to convince you to not do a live video. I've seen it done on a few channels and the video and sound quality are absolute crap. Really not enjoyable at all. I liked this video of you walking around. There weren't a million little edits. See, you actually CAN string together coherent sentences for more than 10 seconds at a time! Sounds like it's been a ton of work getting this ride together. I'm really excited for you, that's going to be amazing. You've been in Japan for 6 years and there's still so much that will be new to you! Good for you on meeting the 10k steps goal. That's the default setting and I lowered mine to 6K, haha! {Not because I'm lazy but because I have torn cartilage in my knee and I have to kind of take it easy to keep the pain down.) Congrats on 1M subs, by the way, VERY long overdue! Happy to be a Patreon supporter, and I live in constant envy that you get to live in, work in, and explore Japan. I need to go back...sigh. Keep up the good work, you've always made great videos and they're getting better and better! :)

Pam Zylik

the cycle sounds like it is going to be very cool te watch :) Very excited to see it (and possibly inspiring for the future ^^) As for the live walking stream thing: yes, more please. Not all the time, but I really like how you've edited in the bits you were talking about. Plus, it looks like a fairly easy way to update your patreons (patrons? patty's?). Anyway, love it, want more, as always ;) cheers

Max Jensch

I really quite enjoyed the walking video. I think changing it up makes the most sense - set the videos where it makes the most sense.

Omg watching you, I can almost feel that godawful Japan humidity. Even if disastrous at times, the cycling videos will be fun for us to watch. Walking is cool but also a little distracting for me. Just do both to mix it up.

1. Congrats on 1 million and 2. do these vlogs walking its nice to see the background of japan while your walking

How about a mix of both walking and sitting? Love to see your "cat" judging you over and over again! : )

Chris, man, I’m so happy for you. You truly deserve the recognition. I’m actually in Tokyo right now for the first time, and you’ve really helped me prepare and get the most out of my trip! I’ve been trying out as much as possible. Everything from the metropolitan government building to calpis. I love it all. These past few years I’ve subscribed and unsubscribed from so many people, it’s hard to keep track, but you are one of maybe a dozen people I can’t see myself ever unsubscribing from. Truly amazing content, great personality, masterful editing, top notch humor, awesome settings, cool friends.. the list goes on. You’re one of a kind. I wish you all the best in the years to come. Keep improving, keep having fun, keep experiencing new things, meeting new people.. keep living the good life. I hope 6 years from now we’ll be celebrating 10m subscribers. At least. Will probably be closer to 20m, but I won’t put pressure on you. Chris, thanks for everything. You’ve genuinely added value to my life. Stay awesome.

Ryan Wolf

Walking is better! We get to see some of the town :)

congrats on 1m! with the comment video, do it how ever you wish. and with patreon videos we come for you so if you think walking would be better. go with that :)

I really enjoy the walking videos and seeing the scenery as you go by. i loved seeing the neighborhood at night in this video. And you look great by the way--ready for the bike tour!

Agreed on both points! I’m not interested in tourism. I want to see what it would be like to live in a country I visit, to go to all the places beloved by locals, not the stuff just made for tourists. I like the “normal” quality to the Japan shown in this walking video.

Chantal Ward

Congrats on 1M! You deserve it because you put a lot of heart and hard work into your videos. :) Glad us Patreon supporters have helped you to keep doing this because you’re good at it and you seem to be gaining satisfaction and trying out many new, exciting things. Thanks for allaying our concerns about you regarding the biking thing. Lol I like the sound of this a lot, the fact that you’ll be showing different parts of Japan and taking time. Originally, it sounded like it was just going to be you on a bike for hours rushing across a country. I was gonna watch it because I really like you and your content, but I wasn’t excited. Now I am! Feels like I’m going on a vicarious journey through Japan and finding out about it before I ever go. I think you’ll find this to be a rewarding experience, and I think it won’t be too difficult for you. I’m sure you’ll grow through it. Regarding the vlog styles, I like both. I think, as it’s convenient for you, switch it up every now and again. Walking all the time will be nauseating to watch. Lol But every once in a while is a nice change of pace, and we get to see a more everyday-life type of Japan instead of all the touristy stuff.

Chantal Ward

I like the walking videos! I feel too many youtubers who talk about Japan do it in a way that doesn't really show the day-to-day of Japan. I really enjoyed this video! P.S. You are looking quite fit, great work!

I prefer the apartment videos however, both options are fine. I also have a fitbit and I find doing 10k everyday quite challenging, so good on you Chris! Keep it up and don't kill yourself cycling. I look forward to your upcoming videos!

I definitely prefer walking videos. P.s congrats on getting 1 million subscribers, love your work.

Stephen Shields

I knew this would happen - your wit is too like a magic for it not to!

I love all your content and if I ever do get to go to Japan (and if you're still there) I would hope to meet you. Sitting or walking, both is good, whatever you feel comfortable with. Congratulations to 1M subscribers! And thanks for reminding me that I have a fitbit, I haven't worn it since I hit my weight goal, but I'm charging it now. Mostly cause my regular watch is out of batteries...

Congrats on 1M subscribers Chris! Great to see how much the channel has grown. Looking forward to more documentary style videos in the future!

I totally read this out of context and it sounds like you just like the idea of walking in general. :)

Argus9 (Jonathan)

You make a really good point. The in-apartment videos feel more intimate and friendly, and do set Chris's videos apart. But the outdoor walk is refreshing, and I'm all for encouraging better health leading up to the cycle.

Argus9 (Jonathan)

I'm not even sure why it was taken down. Shame too, I feel like that's easily one of Chris's best, just from how funny it was.

Argus9 (Jonathan)

Now that you have 1 million subscribers you should probably try and get the Climbing Mt Fuji 8 hrs of hell video back up.

John and Marcella

I like the idea of walking videos, but please don't accidentally doxx yourself. Be safe out there! We all need you safe and sound to keep making that premium content! ^_^

PhattyMcDugen

I give this one tip for the biking. When you start biking, your backside will ACHE like never before...that DOES go away after a couple weeks...I'd recommend that before the big trip. Just the butt getting used to sitting on a seat.

You got this! Biking gets much easier after the first few days, and the distance is really short, so it should be quite easy. :) I prefer walking!

Nari Kim

Chris, when you buy your bike how are you gonna go, racing, mountain or hybrid, frame , and balloon or skinny ,solid or road /off road tyres what you choose makes a huge difference towards achieving your goal !

Nick rees

Hi there Chris! Good to see you. I think going around is nicer, because we do see places of Japan we wouldn't otherwise.

Ok, i didn't know you were canadian. Look like the axe trowing is the one in the mileend (i could be wrong). Keep up with the workout and i hope you can make some video on how to travel in japan in bike!

Gabriel Rheault

I like the concept of walking!

I don't know about Sendai, but here in Kanto at least we had very nice and cool weather for a little more than a week. It was so dry, in fact, that I was able to run in the afternoon instead of at 9 in the evening when the weather is bearable! Although I also find that doing it in the evening is just an overall better experience because you store energy throughout the day. Congratulations on the 1 million! I wanna give you a tip for your bike ride, if I may: I don't think walking 10.000 steps every day is quite enough to get you to Kyushu from Hokkaido. I would highly recommend you to get on the exercise bike and do a certain amount of km every week to really prepare your conditioning for it and build some leg muscles. My friend did the exact same route two years ago, almost, and he prepared by running between 20-30 km on the exercise bike 3-5 times per week and he still had a tough time on the trip at times. I highly recommend visiting a cheap gym just to use their exercise bike at least a couple of times a week.

Errol246

Hi Chris. You asked for comments on whether you should shoot your vids in your apartment or whilst walking. One of things that has set your channel apart from the many 'Gaijin in Japan' youtube channels is the approach you have used over the last few years, which is begin your vids in your apartment and then segue to your featured content. Recording whilst talking and strolling about has been done to death on youtube. Breaking it up as suggested by Brandi is not a bad idea of course as you evolve and improve your channel. I hope though you will keep in mind the qualities that have made your channel such a success, which is your distinctively English humor and presentation style. My tuppence anyroad. Keep up the great work!

Chris Maddox

Mix. Both have their appeal.

I like the walking a bit better.

Walk.

I like both walking and sitting videos, mix it up. Also I think the biking will be fine. The sore part will happen either way. Let's see some progress videos on the biking at night.

Walking is definitely better.

Petr Azanov

Walking vlogs seem to match well with your 10k-steps-a-day program. Voting for those to see you sweat more :P

Ute Hempel

Voting for walking vlogs. I definitely like casual, slice-of-life Japan.

Crisu

I'm a sucker for nighttime scenery so 👏 team walking vlogs 👏

[Esc] reality

Thank you for doing all this. I do not need a tv when I have you.

Walk and talk! I have always loved that format, and I know your feeling silly talking to yourself walking. Congrats on 1m! Truly Epic. Your channel and I... love at first sight. May your channel continue to grow and remember to vacation. Try to vacation... I know it's hard, however your in it for the long haul and self care is a must.

Amaiaisuru

Congratulations on 1 million! 😃 well deserved. You’ve come such a long way from the days of being harassed by hawks outside your tiny apartment. 😂 Keep it up!

Laura Beaumont

Congratulations on the 1M! And #teamsittingvlogs :)

Congrats on the one mil subscribers - woot woot! I personally think you should mix it up - we are obviously interested or wouldn’t be tuning in. Looking forward to seeing where your life takes us next. 🤪

Huge congrats! Very excited for you. I simply wish you many more days, weeks and years of success at whatever direction you decide.

Why did I read the above in your voice?

1) It's been a while since we had a Q&A video! I'd love to see one. 2) Definitely prefer the walk and talk!

Argus9 (Jonathan)

Congrats Chris, you deserve 1 mil! Here’s to another 6 years of quality and sarcastic content! (With some documentary style videos thrown in). Keep up the good work!

Wonderful news to hear! And I like some taking while walking vlogging but not a whole lot.

+1 vote for walking and talking. Not only is that better for your health, but the feeling of the background came through well. In particular, the camera caught the background noises like the bugs and occasional car. These little noises made it easy to feel like we were there with you.

I like the vlogging-while-walking format! Not only does it provide a bit more visual variety than your kitchen bar/table, but it provides a bit of context for where you live, so Sendai feels less like a black hole that only contains your apartment and an invisible train station, konbini and pizza delivery service :). not sure it would be the easiest format to answer reader questions in though - I wouldn't want to walk around with both habds full! Congratulations on the 1 million subscribers, and I look forward to the 45 days of cycling! Taking it a bit more slowly sounds like a wise decision.

Nynke de Haas

grats chris! I'm glad that partreon has allowed you to carry on doing the channel!

Mr Fujisawa

I enjoy the walking around, it feels less scripted as well (not that there's anything wrong with your indoor videos!). And no, please don't do a live stream on the main channel, if the Tokyo Creative stream is anything to judge by, it would be impossible to keep up.

Hey Chris, I think the great mix of documentary style videos and British sarcasm is what brought you so far. So congratulations on hitting the 1M benchmark! I am a tiny little bit concerned with the idea of fans looking out for you. It might get a little bit out of hand if a group of people tries to "track you down" 😅. Other than that, I am looking forward to seeing the Japanese countryside like that. And last but not least, I liked the walking vlog. I guess a mix out of both would be best.

Happy 6 year Japaniversary! And dude, wow, I am so proud of how much you’ve achieved. That’s a very hard earned 1 million subscribers. And it’s a real vindication of your philosophy of quality over quantity. Congratulations Chris. Can’t wait to watch you embark on the cycle, 45 days of adventure awaits!

Congratulations! I was wondering when you’d reach 1,000,000 subs. It’s well deserved - and now Joey can’t make fun of you about it any more...

Awesome video and blog! RE your question - I like the vlogs but I'd prefer them smattered in between your usual videos. I'm also so down for a live stream!

i dig the walking vlogs. While Chris has shown a lot of the Touhoku region, he hasn't shown us much about the normal city in which he lives in.

Congrats you definitely deserve it! I like the walking around vlogs so you should do more.

Congratulations! You've earned it with your informative and entertaining videos! I hope I'm still in Japan when you're doing your cycle! I agree, I like the mix of sitting and walking videos but I doubt that's helpful. The spiders in Japan are aggressive little animals the space above my front door is covered in spiders, I literally had 25 spiders one time, I counted. For the first month and a half I lived here they would build a web right in front of the door every morning just so I would walk into it everyday. Lovely. They finally figured it out that I wouldn't stop leaving out my front door though thank goodness!

Regina Miller

Extremely well deserved, Chris :) As for walk vs sit, you should do both, because they both have their own merits.

Congrats on the 1 mil!! Really looking forward to the ride! We'll be in Japan ourselves next month. Are you going to release your riding schedule ahead of time? Would love to see if our itineraries cross paths anywhere :) Please keep doing the walk and talks! Would LOVE to see more of Sendai!

I did enjoy the walking video, and that night view was beautiful :) it puts the vlog more into context of your daily life I think.

Congrats. The walking vlogs would be better to get a chance to see some scenery other than Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka.

Definitely do more Vlogs walking outside 10/10

Yay well done Chris 😊

Congrats dude, a well deserved one mil! Maybe do a walking vlog with the follow-me feature on the Air. You just might have to shout a bit and scare a few more cyclists haha

John P Kowalchuk

Grats Chris!!!

Adam Penner

Congrats Chris! Walking patreon vlogs are probably better for you. (sucks about the insects though, but hey! extra protein. 😂)

I like you sitting in your apartment more, but I think the walking would be a nice change every once in a while. Also congrats!

Congrats! Now Watanabe-senpai will have to notice you!

Alex

Jesus Chris you've lost some timber!

Congrats!! I like a mix of sitting and walking I think. Helps to separate the vlog from regular videos. Natural Chris

Congrats, you absolute legend! 🙌🙌🙌

Congrats Chris!
