How Long Will I Stay in Japan?

Hey guys

I hope you’re all having a great weekend!

So having hit the 6 year mark of living in Japan, I’ve started to feel a tad reflective recently. I guess that’s the reason the next upcoming video is somewhat ominously titled “How Long Will I Stay in Japan?”

I’ve been so lucky over the years, to do many of the things I’d always dreamed of doing in Japan; climb Mount Fuji, get lost in Osaka, sing karaoke with a drunkard (Natsuki).

With that in mind, you’d think after half a decade I’d probably be bored by now; restless and eager to move on to the next country and culture and lazily rebrand to "Abroad in Mongolia”.

Originally though, the plan was to leave Japan after two or three years and move to Taiwan or South Korea and start all over again. I find there’s something exciting and refreshing about selling all of your possessions, arriving in a different city or town and starting all over again from scratch.

I did it before going to University, then before moving to Yamagata in Japan and most recently, when moving to Sendai (with a brief gap back in the UK in between Yamagata and Sendai).

There’s a sense that each time, you’re starting a new chapter in your imaginary autobiography - with a swanky new chapter title - and ratcheting up the sense of adventure along the way.

However to my surprise I’ve found that, despite living in Japan 6 years, rather than looking at my life here and feeling like I’ve done everything, instead I’ve begun to notice all the things I’ve not yet done; the places I’ve never been, the people I’ve never met and the stories I’ve yet to uncover.

- Hell, we still haven’t met Ken Watanabe. I’ll be damned if we’re leaving before we’ve done that.

Far from feeling as though it’s time to move on, there’s a sense that the Abroad in Japan channel is currently amidst a pivotal moment, where we can take things to the next level.

- I mean, we’ve got a drone now for f*cks sake. The sky’s the limit!

(Although to be fair, the limit is more like 250m; the drone won’t go any higher than that on beginner mode).

So providing all goes according to plan, I don’t see myself going anywhere or even thinking about moving anywhere until at least 2021. Beyond that, it’s too far ahead to say.

But for now, I want to continue immersing myself in filming Japan and perhaps - for the first time - visiting and filming neighbouring countries in Asia as well.

I’ve stuck to the “Japan only” rule for too long out of fear people would be turned off by seeing other countries on the channel. Yet, I’ve started to realise it’s probably not as big of a deal as I’d expected.

It’d certainly be fun to explore Korea /Taiwan / Hong Kong and it’d be foolish not to go and exploit the fact we’re on Asia’s doorstep.

Another goal I have is to try and inspire people to hurry up and do whatever it is they want to do - and perhaps to help viewers figure out what it is they want to do in the first place.

It horrifies me how many people sleepwalk through life, without looking up and questioning the way they lead it and where they’re going - until it’s too late and they regret not doing what they always wanted to do.

In many ways, that’s why I’m doing the cycle. I’ve always wanted to do it at the back of my head, but I’ve postponed it for years and I know that if I don’t do it now, I know I probably never will.

- It’ll always just be “next year” - like it has been the last 3 or 4 years.

By doing the cycle, I'll be well placed to annoyingly lecture people about life, as if I'm some kind of genius. That alone, makes the cycle completely worthwhile (if I survive it).

But you can expect to hear me talk about all this, as well as my time as an English teacher in Japan in the new video! (Along with a few fun new hate comments, which have sadly been lacking in recent videos).

As always, I'd like to hear your thoughts though guys, given you are effectively the “Council of Abroad in Japan”. Your input over the last two years here on Patreon has been invaluable - a huge reason the channel is currently going from strength to strength is down to your advice and support.

So should we start making videos outside of Japan? Do you want more hate comments? And how the hell can we get an audience with Ken Watanabe!

Share your thoughts below - as always, I’m all ears!

Finally, for those that missed this week’s Podcast, we discuss why we finally got a drone, tips for learning Japanese from day one, how safe is travelling Japan alone and why a Japanese guy moved to a secluded tropical island - with a sad ending to his adventurous lifestyle.

That’s all for now guys.

Wherever you may be out there, enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Exactly my feelings!

Chris you should definitely do videos outside Japan. I would love to see your storytelling and cinematography in places like Taiwan, Hongkong and most especially the Philippines!

I probably won't watch videos on other countries, but that's just my interest. However, others may be different and you may be bored, so mix it up if you feel the need. Overall, I do think most people are loyal to the YouTuber most.

I'm here for Japan. But...while I think you would drop in views on YouTube, I think those of us here on patreon are committed to watching you. I can't say what it is I enjoy about you, but I know I enjoy your content. I think it's because you are not fake. I'd like to see more personal stuff and would LOVE a series on you actually teaching Japanese. Really though, it is staying authentic and you have me. I love watching you, but I really like watching you with the other two guys. To me they are just as big of a draw. So while I'd not be as interested in another country...I'm not leaving you. I can't quit you! Love from Chicago suburbs!

Jeremy Carlson

Great great insight. Just one thing. You rly need more places for link that lead to your patreon page. :D

I would definitely miss your Japan videos if you moved elsewhere, but live is a journey forward so you just have to go with it. I would love to see you explore the world like Karl Pilkington v2

I'd love to see you make videos outside of Japan! There are so many Asian countries that I think are just as interesting as Japan, but don't get nearly enough screen time to show it off. Thanks for documenting your journey so far, and here's to 6 more years of Abroad in somewhere!

I'm here for a Broad, not Japan.

Hey Chris, we all know Natsuki loves music, how about a litte reaction video in which he reacts to "JINJER - Pisces (Live Session)" I could imagne that Natsuki would be blown away by the female singer of the band ^^

Marinho

I feel that if you film in other countries, you should do it in a short series over multiple episodes. You could get the best quality (like you always do) and the episodes could each cover a day by day basis! Hong Kong is always somewhere that has intrigued me similar to the Land of the Rising Sun. Keep up the good work. We miss your videos!

Hate comments are effin hilarious despite being gimmicky. The "after the tsunami" was so great and inspiring. Obviously videos with natsuki and ryotoro are awesome too. And hey, "abroad in japan: in korea" and or wherever would be awesome too.

Christine E West-Murphy

Good luck on getting accepted into Interac! That sounds very exciting and I hope you hear back soon with a reply.

I love hearing you read and talk about the hate comments, you do it so well and it is always funny! You're passion to visit other Asian countries is reason enough for you to do that and take us on for the adventure. I found your channel because of my interest in Japanese culture but I have stayed because I enjoy your commentary and work that you put into your channel. you could do a video about cheese and I would still watch it and give you money. Keep doing what you do!

I say go for it! If you want to film outside of Japan I'm sure the vast majority of us would be fine with it, I personally watch the channel 50% because of Japan, 50% because you're just an entertaining ball of sarcasm that I can relate to. On the topic of inspiring people, I've mentioned in patreon emails but I'll reiterate it here. I was inspired years ago to start researching about Japan because of this channel, and right now I'm in the process of applying to Interac with the intention of starting work in Japan in April next year (I've had the interview, sent off all my documents now it's a waiting game) And I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been influenced in that manner.

Mathew Williams-breese

My suggestion... Get us abroadies to Twitter bomb the hell out of Ken Watanabe's Twitter feeds.

I would be interested in you travelling outside Japan. I only lose interest in channels if they move to somewhere else. I have discount tickets for the King and I if you want to fly back to the UK before September 9th! Keep exploring and having fun!

Georgina Luxford

Yes, yes, YES! Please start filming abroad abroad in Japan. I'm so glad you'll keep the momentum going! I've met Ken Watanabe (or at least saw him on stage) last week, are you jealous? ;) And we love the hate comments, keep'em coming. And finally, I'm trying to do the same thing - avoid sleepwalking and have a rich, full life. Sharing that same purpose, or discovering that purpose, will keep and bring people to the channel. All the best with all of it! xxx

I'd love to see other countries in Asia through your lens, too! Your videos were a big help with getting my boyfriend excited about going to Japan (and myself, too!) and South Korea is definitely on my list of countries to visit. As for Ken Watanabe - maybe start a video series titled "Eating a picture of Ken Watanabe per day until he agrees to meet me". That will surely get his attention!

Thanks for the amazing content. You're videos never fail to make me laugh. All the best!

And hey, make sure you prepare properly for that bicycle trip. I'm sure you'll make it through in the end, but just don't get injured doing so. Shit like that can stay with you a long time. Best of luck!

Love your videos, man. Found the channel just about a month ago and been binge-watching since. If you're up for it, just go out there explore as much of Asia as you can. I know I'd watch it at least!

I don't care what you do, so long as you get us Ken Watanabe! In all seriousness though. I think it's safe to say, wherever you go the people have fallen in love with you and your style of showing us Japan, which will no doubt carry over to the wider world that you explore. Personally I'd be completely fine with seeing you explore South Korea, China and such. Looking forward to whatever you do next, keep up the good work!

Your an amazing inspiration dude. I'm actually starting school in a couple weeks and have already been to Japan myself. It seriously all started after running into your channel. Thank you for inspiring me. I plan on teaching in Japan and exploring it as well. I hope to run into you one day. I'll buy you a beer. Thank you Chris.

I think your videos offer a different perspective so if you are traveling and film your travels I'd love to see that even if it isn't about Japan. I do think that there is plenty to still talk about and show in Japan though. I also agree that you can't move until you get an interview with Ken.

Have you considered doing small docs about other foreigners in Japan, and their experiences of change and difference? Or docs about other Japanese, and their experience of the Japanese human experience?

I personally wouldn't mind videos of other Asian countries. If there is enough interesting material out there and it's fun for you to do, then go for it. Just keep your usual style and your subscribers will watch pretty much everything, I know I will :)

A brief stint in South Korea and maybe a collab with World of Dave wouldn't be too bad :p But fundamentally Chris it's about doing what you enjoy, that has to take precedence over the viewership, we'll be behind you every step of the way no matter what angle you branch out to!

Wooo hate comments!! I need more witty Chrisponses to them :D Also I mean yeah it is a Japan-based channel but I wouldn't particularly mind if there were a couple of videos on other Asian countries, especially if you highlight your thoughts on the differences between the countries as someone who lived in only in Japan. According to what the others here are saying, I'd personally make very few videos on them, perhaps 2 per country? I don't know, you're the YouTuber here, you know what you're doing much better than I do. With that said, have a great day dude.

It's abroad in 𝐽𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑛 for a reason ;)

I would prefer content mostly about Japan. With Sharla and Taylor posting about South Korea and Hongkong, I personally would not need another of my favorite youtubers changing their content. There is still so much to see and learn about Japan. And I am really really looking forward to see some (lots!) of drone shots!

This x1000. Chris' videos are way more in depth in Japanese culture, rather than recycled modern pop-culture that's usually on YouTube. I actually learn new stuff about Japan that I haven't learned from learning Japanese at school. I'd love to learn more about Korea and Taiwan. Surely there's more to those countries than K-pop and Bubble Tea.

I lived in Mongolia for 2 years. It can be fun and have great experiences but you either live in a small town with desert for miles on the literal edge of town (mine had a ditch to keep it from expanding) or you live in Ulaan Baatar (UB) living the ex-pat lifestyle with all the other ex-pats. Good luck on your next few years.

bren

Leon, you are not. XD I'm down for seeing other countries through your lens. Do it!

Mary Hodge

I hope I am not the only one who hears Chris speaking with his sarcastic accent while reading the text :) Concerning the videos outside Japan: I would love to see more videos from you, even in another country. I just hope that you will keep the informative style and your philosophy of trying to teach people something in your videos. This is what makes them stand out in the sea of Vloggers. Because your philosophy combined with your whacky sarcasm is what kept me following you channel for two years now. Keep up the good work! Cheers, Leon

I think no matter where you are, you would make great content. To me, you take the time to be understanding and respectful of Japanese culture, without blindly worshipping or fetishizing it; as long as you carry that mindset wherever you go next, I think you'll be golden. And I mean, I would hate if you didn't do something you wanted in life because us Internet masses were squeamish about it. Do what makes you happy, and we'll be happy for you.

Your comment about sleep walking through life resonates with me a lot. I also love the excitement of restarting life afresh, I left the UK and moved to the US 7 years ago and now I've noticed I've fallen back into autopilot with my life here. I'm planning to apply for the working holiday visa in October (have to go back to the UK first) and head to Japan. It's not easy, it can be painful to leave your old life behind. I've broken up with my girlfriend of over 3 years who I care about a lot. But I know I would regret living a staid, static life of unfulfilled dreams and I think the resentment would ultimately outweigh the temporary pain.

I love your content for your sarcastic humour and your nonchalant honesty. When you first started the channel, I suppose that most viewers came across you because of Japan-related interest. However, I daresay you have a pretty solid fan base by now, who might have come for the topic of Japan but stayed for your charisma. With that being said, I would love to watch any kind of video whether in or outside Japan, as long as it is produced coming from your heart.

Abroad in Japan

If Ken Watanabe comes to the Toronto International Film Festival again I can get you to meet him. He was last here in 2016 but who knows when he’ll be back.

I think you should definitely film outside of Japan. I would find that interesting. And the beautiful thing about this medium is that you'll quickly get the feedback you need on whether or not you should continue to do it by the views and likes, as always. So at worst you make a video or two that go nowhere, but at best you open a whole new world for yourself and your audience. This seems a worthwhile thing to attempt.

Leo

Awesome work as always Chris. Filming across in other Asian countries would be fascinating to see through your sarcastic lens. What I hope you do is find a way to bridge that progression, and not just turn up in South Korea for example to observe a topic. One reason your videos are amazing is because they have a sense of narrative to them, that you aren't just turning up at a place and filming; you provide a backstory and context for each and every video. Case in point, it would be cool to see these kinds of videos wrapped in a 'Abroad in Japan but also X, Y or Z' series to tie everything together, I'm sure this is something you have already thought about though, so keep up the amazing work :)

Which Hogwarts house were you sorted into?

I came to your channel through suggested videos after watching Japanese food recipe channels. I find you quite familiar (probably because we grew up in and around South East UK, we’re roughly the same age, and have roughly the same level of sarcasm), and you’ve done something I would have loved to do (unfortunately my life is too exciting as it is to move to another country, holidays to Japan should suffice though). It really looks like you’re enjoying life in the land of the rising sun, and I can’t wait to see what’s comes next!

Regarding Ken, have you tried sending him your nudes? And on a more serious note, great channel Chris. Love the recent collabs on other channels, you've brought some spirit into Tokyo Creative. There is a lot of Japan you haven't shown us. Maybe update/compile a places to visit in Japan video? Make it a mini series with different viewpoints. Going abroad is also a great idea, but just going there is probably not gonna cut it for most people, you need a conquest plan ;) If you plan on going to other countries, Korea is a great place to start, as it's not so far culturally from Japan as f.e. Taiwan. Maybe make a couple more collaborations with other creators in Japan and the rest of Asia.

Even though I came to your channel because of japan, I stayed because of the good content you make (but... also because it was in Japan). What I mean is, if you ever feel like there is nothing more to do in Japan and you want to explore and make videoes about new countries, then do it! And if you feel like blending other countries with your abroad in japan channel is a bad idea, you could always try to make a side channel called "Abroad in Asia" or "Abroad in the world" or something completely different. What is important is that you make content that YOU like, and YOU are passionate about. If not, there is no point in doing it, is it? With all that being said, I'm glad that you'll keep staying in Japan for at least a few years more, cause I personally really enjoy your videos in Japan. However, I that does not mean I won't watch and enjoy future videoes from other countries. Keep up the good work, and good luck!

Hey Chris! I'm super passionate about that idea you mentioned, about making the most of your life and trying not to sleepwalk through it. I yell frustratedly about it at my family members, who all have their own ways of not doing it (my mom not knowing what she wants, my dad knowing but not doing it, etc) to the point where I've become almost a meme of myself doing it. There are so many cliches about this topic but damn it, some of them are just true. Anyway if you ever do work related to that which would benefit from the support of an American actuarial analyst/writer, I'd be glad to step up!

Make videos outside Japan it’s you we like lol! The hate comment videos are amazing we want more!! And make a ‘dear ken watanabe’ video 🙂! 😎👍

I would personally love content from other Asian countries as well. I follow a few different YouTubers who live in Japan, partly because they live in Japan and partly because they are entertaining people. Simon & Martina, for example, moved from South Korea to Japan, but I'm equally interested in their experiances in both countries. Japan might have a certain pull as a country, but I really don't think you making travel videos about other Asian countries will make anyone disappointed.

I would watch your videos regardless of where they are filmed. But I am certainly glad you are still happy staying in Japan. Your videos above all other youtubers give me a sense of "being" in Japan. I've been searching for an opportunity to live there for many years now but maybe I need to move beyond the "wait till next year" mentality. I hope to find my chance before you move away. I'd love to buy you a meal and a pint as thanks for keeping my dream of living in Japan alive. Hopefully that didnt sound too creepy. Haha Looking forward to your future content!

Zac Kelsey

Great post, very inspiring without being over the top. I really relate to the items you speak about. I've spent my earlier years trying to figure out what I wanted to do and I'm just now realizing the fruits of all my hard work in my 20s. I'm excited to capitalize on all of this to launch me into my next adventure. I don't want to ever be stagnant. There is too much to experience to stay safe in the known. I too hope others realize the grand world waiting for them. Always love your content and best vibes your way from Philly!

You should go to North Korea. Then get arrested, and make a video about your experiences there, 20 years later when they finally release you. Think of all the Patreon money that will just accumulate as we breathlessly await your return. If that's not feasible then can you find a way to get the Climbing Mt. Fuji video back up. At least here the US it is no longer watchable. Thanks.

John and Marcella

I'd love to see you make videos on other countries. When you mentioned visiting Korea I was hoping we'd see some of it.

Honestly I've been following the channel long enough that you could go anywhere in the world, and I'd still follow and watch. My husband has enjoyed your videos too whenever it's something cool that we would like to see on our next trip to Japan. I'm a huge sucker for Korea though, so that would be my vote for the next country you move to (but still totally up to you!). On the flip side, you seem like you've become well established in Japan, and there is a ton more you can probably do there, it might be a small island on the Pacific Ocean, but it's a huge country in terms of culture and things to see I think. I'm excited to see how things go with the Cycle trip of a lifetime :D

Barbara Smith

The part about "hurry[ing] up and do[ing] whatever it is they want to do" got me. I've spent my whole young adult life just doing what I should do: get an engineering degree, get internships, find work, save money, and currently, work for years and years to get a PhD. There's so much more that I want to do, like living in another country, studying language and culture and teaching people about my culture. I don't think I can abandon my PhD program right now, but I really feel like at 24 the time where I make the decision to do what I want to do must come soon if it's ever going to come. I need to find a way to make it happen and, somehow or other, I *will* make it happen... in the next couple years. Unfortunately, I think that's the best I can aim for for now. Thanks Chris!

Some viewers would certainly be turned off quite easily by not-specifically-Japan content (and leave more possibly interesting hate comments on their way out), but I believe that far more of your following will be absolutely thrilled to see more places, people, and ideas explored through your eyes and cameras.

Seeing you make videos in other countries would be great to watch. But if you go to Korea for example, would it be a "quick" few months trip and then hop over to the next country or would you stay there for years and learn the language like you did in Japan. Either way is okay with me and I'm sure for most of your audience as well, I think if you go for the former the channel could be renamed to your full name like other vloggers have done, or if you go for the ladder it could be changed to Abroad in Korea.

Personally i dont watch your channel for videos about Japan, if i did then there are plenty of other channels i could watch other than yours. I watch your channel because of you. I, and likely many others, arent a fan of AbroadinJapan. I'm a fan of Chris Broad. So travel, have fun and make videos, we'll be watching!

I'm with @R-Devu here - came for the info on Japan, stayed for the entertainment. Branching out and filming in neighboring countries would make for an interesting turn - starting to experience another new culture, but with the experience you have of living overseas in Japan. Regardless, I'm glad to hear you're not planning to leave Japan just yet. Your videos have been a huge reason why I'm so interested in learning about cultures abroad, and even though I'm not in a position to just up and move there, I plan to keep coming back and experience Japan. P.S. I'll never say no to hate comment videos, they're some of my favorites. :D

Argus9 (Jonathan)

Seeing you visit mainland China would be fun as well!

So, I am all about the Videos in different countries, because I don't get to travel as much as I like I get to see it through your perspective and that's really helpful and helps keep up my drive to one day be able to travel like you can and potentially move to Japan after my degree. As for the hate comments I am torn, they are funny but they are also giving light to the horrible people there are out there which isn't really great. Maybe you could do it and leave their names out so they aren't getting recognition for being a fuck-stick? The climbing Mount Fuji is still one of my favourite videos because of how adventurous it was and how you and your friend bounced off one another. Moar pls! How's the cycling training going and do you have any plans to get Strava? Would love to keep up with you on there and maybe match your mileage.

Did anyone else read this with a British accent int their head? Love all your videos and I can't wait to see what you have in store in the future! Whether you move or not!

Would love to see videos about other countries!! Korea would be awesome!! Also “An Audience With Ken Watanabe” is a video we’d all love to see. And that should be the title of it lol

Fran Batchelor

1. I would love videos from other countries, even if I came for Japan I stayed for you. 2. Hate comment videos=Great 3. I don't have anything else but having just 2 points seemed wrong, all great things comes in threes (me,myself, and I)

Film anywhere, I’ll still watch. I started watching because you had information on Japan, but I stayed due to your personality and unique sense or humour. Go for it! I’ll still watch and Patreon’ise no matter what country you’re filming in.

I'll dispatch Pete Donaldson to interview him

Abroad in Japan

We need more hate comment videos! Those are golden! Your wit and dry sense of humor is endless!

I didn't even realise he had twitter?! haha

Abroad in Japan

I would love to see you visiting the rest of Asia. As for Ken, he's in London at the moment doing The King and I - so if you get a chance to head home maybe you'll find him there haha.

Lewis

While I love your videos about Japan and I think the cycle ride will be fascinating, I would still watch videos about other Asian countries because your hosting them. Is your personality that draws me to your videos with Japan being a close second.

Kristin Briley

I would enjoy your take on neighboring countries, so, yes - do it!

Tweet Ken? The power of social media is literally awesome.
