How to Take Amazing Photos on Your Phone | Patreon Vlog

Hey guys,

I hope you're all having a fantastic week!

New Patreon vlog is now up (above)! This time I'm going in depth on how I make the most of my phone when taking photos for social media (particularly Instagram) with tips/advice I hope you'll find useful in getting the most out of
your phone.

I realised recently that all these years of doing social media have taught me a few useful things worth sharing, so expect more tip videos in upcoming vlogs.

Sorry for a relatively quiet two weeks - I found myself bouncing up and down between Tokyo and Sendai (not literally - I'm not a ball...yet) filming a series of videos for a new channel called Tokyo Creative.

Tokyo Creative is a bit like an MCN (multi-channel network), except instead of taking revenue and then doing nothing (like most MCN's), they take no revenue and actually help me produce videos (if I need a studio space or cameraman for example).

In return every other month I present videos on their channel, which is anything but a chore, as I'm usually filming with various friends from other channels - and even Natsuki has been taking part to his joy.

It's pretty exciting to have a team in Tokyo at my disposal to help film in restaurants/bars/hidden places a lot easier, and I'm currently thinking up how best to exploit this wonderful situation, now we have a team and a film crew to make ideas happen.

Here's the full list of content from this week mentioned in the vlog!

There's also another Podcast out today where Pete and I answer questions sent in by listeners! Check it out at the link above.

Just for another update on the Natsuki: Movie project, the reason it keeps getting pushed back is I've found myself in a bit of a catch 22 situation. People keep asking where it is while I put out new content, and then when I focus my efforts on Natsuki: The Movie, people ask where new content is.

So in April I've been trying to get Natsuki back in the scene after not being on the channel for half a year, with the Day in My life and Gyoza videos, as well as the two Tokyo Creative videos, and remind folks who he is.

- There is method to the madness.

Truthfully we do have ONE more youtube video out, AND THEN the movie. The next video on the channel is just discussing the movie and reminding viewers it's a thing before we go for it.

And then until the movie is finished and uploaded, nothing else is going in my calendar!

- Only thing is I'm still trying to work out what to call it - don't be surprised if I talk to you guys about that in the next few days. I toyed with Life is Balloons but I just don't think it works.

For now though, enjoy the videos/podcasts and have a decadent Thursday!

That's right, decadent.

Really important tip for those looking to step up their photography game is to shoot in RAW! Most cameras, even the latest gen smartphones, allow this now, but have it disabled. Shooting raw means you can recover more details in the shadows and blown-out highlights and gives a lot extra space for editing. This adds a step to your processing flow, so it can be a bit annoying, but its a really powerful tool. And of course, the top photography trick: just take more photos! Take photos of everything!

I love the idea of teaching something new in every video. Your focus on self-improvement and then sharing you learnings with others is awesome.

Happy belated birthday!!

Yeah I'd absolutely recommend using it - I tend to use it when taking photos!

Every phone I've used has a "show grid" toggle in the camera app. This makes it easy to see where the intersection points are so you don't need to envision it. Handy.

Argh! I keep forgetting that Patreon doesn't allow paragraphing. What I wanted to say: I've been using the rule of thirds for decades and Snapseed for a few years, and both really work great, so kudos for promoting them! And thanks for pointing out the details and brush tools; I never really knew what they were (for), but I clearly need to explore them. :)

Belated happy birthday! I think I really liked being 28 (although it's been 9 1/2 years, and they've all been pretty good ages to be).

A common composition mistake I see Instagram photographers making is putting the horizon in the middle of the frame. It makes the picture uncomfortable to look at, as the top and bottom halves are balanced and your eye doesn't know which way to go. Tilt your camera up or down a bit, maybe even put the horizon on a third, to make a more appealing final product.

Today I learned I'm using the camera grid overlay wrong. I've never given much thought to post-processing my photos before, but I'm excited to try now after this video. Maybe a stroll through the park to give it a go. 😀 Thanks for the update Chris! As for movie name...I guess it depends on who the intended audience is. Anyone who's familiar with the channel will instantly know what "Natsuki: The Movie" is all about, but I guess it's not very descriptive on its own. Then again, from the previews you gave...previously, quite a bit of it does seem to be about Natsuki and his vacation. Whatever name you do settle on, a subtitle may be helpful. Maybe that will take some of the stress out of naming the thing. Thanks as always for the great content!

Haha, talk about things getting pushed back, I finally got a Tourism job (10 years later). And actually, Chris, I work with a guy who was an English teacher in Aomori and he used to bump into you at PUB. Small world in Tourism XD Thanks for the update on Natsuki: The Movie <3 I've been hoping soon. I can't wait to delve into the World of Natsuki. Feature film on Ryotaro's attempts to conquer the world next?

mega apologies for missing your birthday man! as a 23 year old, the idea of being nearly 30 terrifies me :D also great photography tips!
