PATREON VLOG | Featuring on Japanese TV | Abroad in Japan Podcasts

Hey guys,

I hope you've all had a great week so far!

I'll be brief as I'm flying in a minute - in a plane, not magically of my own accord (although the superhero research continues...)

In this week's vlog I discuss the upcoming podcasts, being on Japanese TV (along with a clip of the segment), Natsuki: The Movie and an experimental upcoming video.

As I mention vlog, go ahead and let me know your recommended podcasts to listen to (so I can study the art of podcasting).

And what were YOUR three favourite movies of 2017? (Mine are in the video).

For now, have a great day guys!

Enjoy your Thursday!

Chris

Comments

He stated in his video that he is not going to give us another release date but instead will just upload the movie as soon as it is finished.

Is there a new release date for natsuki the movie?

Hey there Chris, Good to see you! I'd have one special podcast for you which I really enjoy listening to. It's hosted by Sam Harris and called the Waking up with Sam Harris. It's a rather scietific Podcast with topics like AI, politics and biology. He invites normally an expert about the field and they normaly talk for at least 1 hour about it. Enjoy and have a good time!

Who is this mystery DJ? Adam Buxton? Everyone has mentioned the good podcasts... I'd add 'SonicState podcast' too. It's an audio production podcast - live recorded, with video on YouTube too. I think the most important things to consider are to keep it tight; go in with a list of topics and keep moving those along - stay within a half hour of 45 minute commute-length format. Also get the compression and mastering right in your post production so the audio levels are good and strong.

Chris, I also just watched the "After the Tsunami" video, and it's the best thing I've seen you do. That was not an episode of "Abroad In Japan," it was a short film, and I wish it had been longer. I could see it as an hour-long documentary on television. If you're ever looking for ideas for your next film, I would happily watch a feature-length documentary about Ichiyo Kannou at the bed and breakfast. She seems to be a woman with incredible strength and wisdom. She was only on screen for a few minutes, but I am going to be thinking for a long time about what she said and how she faces life. I'm quite serious ... she is what the world needs! Thanks for the great work.

Finally got around to watching your Tsunami video. Wow! This was such a thoughtful and moving film Chris; you couldn't have done any better. If you ever decided to branch out into more serious documentary-style films, then I can see the potential is already there. Thank you!

Hi Chris, Just watched your Tsunami video. I never really comment on videos (always like though!) but this video really made me want to drop a line and say that this was an amazing video and I seriously hope that you continue making more videos of this type. Thank you so much for all the effort you put into your content :)

Lita

just watched the Tsunami video and I would say it is one of your best. I think you should consider yourself more of a journalist and documentarian than a youtuber-rather youtube is just your format for delivery (as opposed to the Logan Paul's of the world). Please do more of this sort of serious format videos-it was excellent. Also have you considered using Kickstarter to fund a trip somewhere else? I'd love to see an Abroad in the World series where you and crew go outside Japan and offer us a window of other places through your perspective.

Hey, are you still doing the "question videos" and where can i send you a simple question?

Dragonisser

Really looking forward to the podcast, really feel you'll be podcasting with Pete which will be a lot of fun. I listen to a lot of podcasts and i personally like podcasts that have a bit of structure in the way of segments but are not rigid (going off the rails once in a while is entertaining) - its a pretty tough balance but here's some shows i feel do a good job at it: -Kinda Funny Games Daily -PS I Love You XOXO (now retired) -Luke & Pete show If you feel the show should be a lot more fluid where you just let the conversation flow, i feel the comedy button may be a good podcast to check out. All the best, i hope you enjoy your break back here in the UK!

Heard you get a mention on the Luke and Pete show so I think I might know who the presenter is!

Important; the days of pure audio broadcasting are gone. You will need video to stay competitive. For that I suggest more than one camera with a switcher to keep your podcast dynamic and interesting. Consider having someone produce this show in exchange for a stable plug so you do not have to worry about sound quality and video problems which will kill your momentum. One; this is not an endorsement but there is an appeal to the Joe Rogan Experience that you should study. The podcast itself relies heavily on unscripted interaction. Rogan may have a curiosity he wishes to indulge concerning his guests but they are on the fly and not read off of a note somewhere. Actually having a logical transition in a conversation that does not compromise it's flow is an art onto itself. It comes down to two people shooting the shit with one another, which leaves both the podcaster and the guest off their guard and allows for more candid interactions. Two; if you're serious about this then you should work up the courage to flex your Japanese skills more. You can subtitle where you can in post production before posting the video to your media sharing website of choice. I'm sure fans of Abroad in Japan would find some inspiration in listening to you speak the lingua franca of your home base.

this.

Your struggle with the release date reminds me of the video game industry. We often talk a lot about the pros and cons of release dates, and how awful it feels to miss the mark and disappoint fans. That said, this is a bit of a different operation, and people here are actively rooting for your success, so it's much less of an issue. Really looking forward to Natsuki the movie's release! I'm only just seeing this vlog as I'm only just in the last day getting in from my first ever trip to Japan. I wanted to take a moment to thank you for putting this channel together. I'm not someone who frequents YouTube content, but a friend of mine showed me this channel, and I have binge watched a lot of it in the last couple of months. You are a great entertainer, and your travels helped me put together a plan for where I wanted to go during my seven day trip. The schedule, if you were curious: 01/21 - Arrive in Shinjuku 01/22 - Akihabara, hit up the Eorzea FFXIV cafe, the Gachapon store (where I bought, much to my friend's dismay, a lewd waifu), a bunch of figurine shops, a sushi conveyor belt place 01/23 - Shiroishi, fox village 01/24 - Kawaguchiko (we were planning on going to the 5h station, but the road up was closed that day), toured the city, saw this amazing old timey thatched roof village 01/25 - Osaka, Osaka Castle, Dotonbori 01/26 - Kyoto, Fushimiinari Shrine, Cat Cafe 01/27 - Shinjuku, Samurai Museum, a lot of Pokemon hunting 01/28 - Shingyoen, Akihabara, more shops, Pokemon Mega Store, and a delightful place called the Yurei Izakaya, which I think you'd enjoy making a video on. It's a heavily decorated diner based on the after life, complete with "poison" challenges, involving wasabi. It's near the Ikebukuro stop in Tokyo. But yeah, thanks a bunch for showing me a lot of cool things that I didn't know that I wanted to see in Japan. Already beginning to plan my next trip out. Thinking more of a Sendai, away from the city vibe.

Hi Chris, a podcast from you would be awesome. You have a wide variety to offer from special guests, projects you're working on, to interesting info and your knowledge...all sprinkled with sarcasm. I listen to a pool of podcasts all day while working: apologies for the obnoxiously long list.... News and Stories -This American Life -Invisbilia -Wait Wait....Don't Tell Me -The Moth -Radiolab -Ask Me Another -Crimetown -Under the Skin with Russell Brand The Kevin Smith Empire -Edumacation -Hollywood Babble-On -Fat Man on Batman -Smodcast -Tell 'Em Steve Dave Comedians Doing Their Thing -How Did This Get Made? -Monday Morning Podcast -The Nerdist -The Joe Rogan Experience -Your Moms House While I'm on the subject of oversharing I think you may like music from New Retro Wave Records. Synth based musicians making some fantastic sounds. https://newretrowave.com/

Matt

Hope you had a good travel and enjoy being home with family and friends :) And I hope to hear more about your podcast soon. Sounds really interesting so far. About the delay of Natsuki the movie as a German I can only smile about such a small thing, thinking about projects here like the new airport of Berlin, or the station for Stuttgart. ;) Could be worse.

Hey Chris you & Natsuki got mentioned in the Puro Resu podcast at the 14 min mark! Link: https://audioboom.com/posts/6624330-new-japan-purocast-ep116-the-new-beginning-in-sapporo-review

Haha this made my day

Abroad in Japan

So excited for the movie and the podcast - i beat my husband at scrabble this morning and sang Natsuki version of we are the champions without even thinking!

Brigitte Marie

Beyond Synth Podcast ;D because we all love the 80s

Personally speaking, I hope you spend the next two weeks catching up with friends and family and sorting out your podcast. Everything else can wait, the clips from Natsuki the movie look wonderful, and it will be all the better for the anticipation. I'm sorry I can't give a film opinion. The last thing I saw in the cinema was Chicken Run in 1999. Embarrassing, I know, but there we go. Such is life. I prefer non-fiction, and 99% of documentaries are on the telly.

Thanks for the update Chris! I excited to see your movie! Top three movies have got to be 1. Dunkirk 2. Thor Ragnarok 3. IT

Hey Chris! A podcast I have been binge-ing lately is History of Japan. Basically it's a guy who posts half an hour episodes every week giving historical information about Japan. He recently has done a few true-crime episodes, like The Monster with 21 Faces and the Teigin Incident. It is a good listen on flights and commutes! I am very excited about your podcast as well!

99% Invisible has some the highest quality and best production I know in a podcast. Definitely worth looking into.

Harry Bonyari

Hope you have a great time back in the UK and best of luck with finishing off Natsuki the movie! Out of interest where do you go to book flights UK to Japan? I keep checking up on skyscanner but I have my suspicions as to these actually being the cheapest flights available - if you know a cheaper place/way/route to get them that would be superb! Thanks! M

Thistlevixen

Sweet. My bf got the Shure SM57 for his Twitch streams and online Blizzard tournament casts and its amazing how much better the audio quality improves. My 3 movies I enjoyed for 2017 are 1. Bladerunner 2049 (Watched it twice.) 2. Get Out 3. The Disaster Artist. Also want to see Top Knot Detective, but being a cult film. It isn't exactly easy to watch when there are limited screenings. Even if it's an Australian film, heh BTW I was wondering why you made so many Twitter posts so early in the morning. I usually work till 3-6am so I was a tad concerned. Glad that your heading back for a few weeks, you deserve the break!

Hey Chris, I'm a big podcast fan so I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with yours! Some of my faves that are edited really well are: - Criminal - Death, Sex & Money - Heavyweight - Lore - Modern Love - Radiolab Some others that are more 'talky' than storytelling are: - Beautiful Anonymous - No Such Thing As A Fish - The Infinite Monkey Cage - Punch Up The Jam - Stuff You Should Know

Hahaha I love how in the video you get cut off mid sentence twice! Damn those editors messing with you once again! haha. Anyhow will be interesting to see what happens with this podcast business and Natsuki the movie whenever it's ready! + Maybe see you around if you're about in London for a couple of weeks.

Logan was my favorite movie of 2017

Hope it's Peter Barakan on the podcast

Mike Prater

No worries about the delays Chris, you've updated us every time, that's way more than most kickstarters I've backed! As for your long trip, a perfect time to catch up on Zelda... until the Switch's 2-3 hour battery dies. I hope there's a charging port available on the plane. I listen to a few podcasts that have great presenters that do a good job of bouncing off each other. I'll link them below with a description: H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast: http://hppodcraft.com/2015/03/05/episode-247-dracula-part-1/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-h-p-lovecraft-literary-podcast/id369757090?mt=2 -Production quality and the chemistry between the presenters is top notch. They have readings of a horror story throughout and then break it down, exploring the meaning of the story and history behind the scenes with the times or writer. They stopped covering H.P. Lovecraft's stuff around ep 100, and have since covered people he knew, influences, stories and movies influenced by Lovecraft. Tofugu Podcast: https://soundcloud.com/tofugu/jet-interview iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-tofugu-podcast-japanese-language-and-culture/id1188142876?mt=2 -The chemistry between these guys is hilarious, the show is very informative and the production quality is pretty good. They cover learning the Japanese language, moving /visiting Japan and anything Japanese really. The Penny Arcade DLC (Podcast): http://hw1.pa-cdn.com/pa/assets/dlc/s09/dlc-s09e06-as_was_foretold-03ZRDvO3.mp3 Site: https://www.penny-arcade.com/podcasts/show/dlc/season/9 iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/downloadable-content/id1092391018?mt=2 -Mike and Jerry are the artist and writer behind the penny arcade gaming web comic that has been going on for years. They also run the PAX gaming expos and are behind the charity child's play. Their stuff is generally funny, but their presentation quality is just them chatting to come up with an idea for the next strip, not really presenting to an audience. A fun listen regardless. -L.P. comic: https://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2018/01/08/anthropology SModcast: https://soundcloud.com/smodcast/smodcast-85-side-chair iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/smodcast/id215010467?mt=2 -This is a podcast ran by Kevin Smith (actor/director) and co, where they talk about movies, and what not. The podcast is generally funny and the guys have good chemistry, to the point of creating random fictional scenarios, like the in one episode where Kevin has become a blob monster where he calls to Bryan to feed him while keeping him in captivity. (Linked that ep. ^_^ )

We forgive you, Chris. Or rather, I forgive you. I can only speak for myself. I don’t want you to run yourself ragged trying to please us, although it is good that you enjoy editing. It would suck if you got sick and had to delay with other stuff because your sleep is all out of whack, so just be careful. I am still looking forward to the movie and the goodies I bought for it are tucked away, waiting. As for podcasts, I don’t really listen to them at all. I’ll listen to yours, though. The only one I listen to is Ear Biscuits. I like the fact that Rhett and Link get more serious in those and become more personal with the audience. They also like to expand on odd psychological topics. It feels like sitting in a cozy room with some friends and playing hypotheticals, which I’ve always loved (but none of my friends seem to care about). Lol

Chantal Ward

best uncle themed podcast around http://unclethepodcast.com/

http://www.hellointernet.fm/ ideal podcast for you!

Dan Boyle

I don't listen to podcasts, but good luck. Sounds promising.

Chris, would you mind putting a link to the video you made about the coastal towns that were affected by the tsunami?

Simon

A podcast about Japan that I enjoy but unfortunately is produced on very irregular intervals is Japanatron. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSuOeE_YorU6WFt2Bf_nny3ESqqRpTpGD

My favourite Podcasts: Baited - YouTube Podcast with Keemstsr, ColossalisCrazy and AnythingforViews DHB Radio Show - A Scottish Podcast between 2 - 5 Scottish hosts that talk about things going on in their life and opinions on daily subject currently going on. H3H3 - YouTube Podcast for H3H3 The Official Podcast - YouTube Podcast with Critical and Co. They usually have different big YouTubers on each week. Views - YouTube Podcast with David Dobrik and Jason Nash

Red

I maybe putting 2+2 together to make 5 but one of my favourite podcasters regularly visits Japan and talks about it on one of his podcasts and I'm fairly sure he's actually named dropped you before. He also happens to be a radio DJ! If it's him, I've no doubt it'll be amazing. Adam Buxton can be a good listen, tends to be hit or miss for me, but the episode with Louis Theroux was very entertaining.

My favourite Podcasts are: The Mystery Show- sadly only six episodes were made- however, if you ever wanted to know how tall Jake Gyllenhaal is then this is the show for you! , Revisionist History, and Radiolab. Looking forward to the podcast!!

I can't wait for the podcast! I listen to quite a few, but my favourite at the moment is Crash on my Couch by Arden Rose and Will Derbyshire, where they chat about interesting things they've found on the internet. They have loads of different segments including ones about cults, movies, news, cool animals, weekly idiot, and a q&a segment. Great if you're the kind of person who can spend hours getting sucked into the internet, I've loved every episode so far!

I don't really listen to many podcasts, but the one I do listen to is risky business https://risky.biz/ - it's an information security podcast.

Because of where I live, every time I go to Japan, I leave home 4 hours before my flight to drive to airport, take 3.5 hour plane to LAX, then 3 hour layover before 11 hours to NRT because a Henada is far too expensive and includes a layover, then get off plane and have at least 2 hours to get to Tokyo after getting through airport and to take bus or train. So my travel is always at least 23 hours but closer to 26 usually before I'm anywhere near a bed.

Yessss🙌🏻

My favourite podcasts are “The Weekly Planet” it’s a comic book movie podcast with two Aussie dudes they’re pretty funny. Also “StarTalk Radio” with Neil deGrasse Tyson. He has some funny ones where he trashes crappy science in movies or discuss probability of aliens etc. They’re both on iTunes. Fave movies... Thor Ragnarok, Wonder Woman anddd Spider-Man Homecoming. :)

gotta be the original ricky jervais on xfm

“He’s a good kid, he made a mistake”. Nah man, he’s a 22 year old adult, and he made about a hundred “mistakes”.

I’ll second the vote for Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Star Talk Radio https://www.startalkradio.net Heaps of fun and you don’t even need to be an astrophysicist to enjoy :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QKRSQ9YTPo try these guys Chris! They're A bunch from Bristol called the Yogscast and run this little podcast thing on the side called the Triforce

This is my cousins podcast. I'm not linking for exposure, because he stopped doing it. But just because I thought it had a fun and different approach. Also every episode is only 3 min 16 https://the316.podbean.com/

If you wanna embark on an amazing journey through ancient China, I recommend you The Romance of The 3 Kingdoms Podcast. The storytelling and content are amazing !

Can't wait for the video about the aftermath of the tsunami. I live in Vancouver, Canada and one of my favourite stories was about a man from Japan who reunited with his boat that had washed up on the BC coast: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/british-columbia/in-photos-japanese-fisherman-reunited-with-boat-swept-away-in-the-2011-tsunami/article26158352/

Favourite movies of the year are: dunkirk, blade runner, good time, a ghost story. All very good films

Once again, despite wishing it were out sooner I'm grateful that the movie is coming out at all. Thanks for the hard work Chris!

You can aim for my brithday instead, 12 feb ;)

My birthday is today (the 25th). I'd naturally been really annoyed that you were going to miss it by one day - so, ironically, the delay actually makes me feel much better.

a Great podcast to check out is Nerdzilla on ABC Radio Australia, its made for the ABC by an ABC Hobart Tasmania producer and a local nerdy Dentist, well worth checking out. http://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/nerdzilla/

I Know elton john just retired, so perhaps he's your co- presenter, but then again he's more of your performer than Dj, just a hunch ;p

Great video and thanks for posting the tv clip. It was short but came across really well. Safe travels my friend!

I like Simon and Martina’s podcast, Fatman on Batman and also ひいきびいき. All available on iTunes.

Hey Chris, my favourite podcasts are currently The Triforce Podcast (nothing to do with Zelda), The Roosterteeth Podcast and The Doug Stanhope podcast. Good luck!

The Adventure Zone is a fun podcast if you want something different than traditional interview/current events podcasts.

I'm not a particularly regular podcast listener, but I listen to Adam Buxton's (from old school Adam and Joe show) podcast a lot. He's affable and has some really fun podcasts. For informative shows, I listen to NPR podcasts, like that Michael Moore bloke above. I've heard 99% invisible is fascinating too.

The Weekly Planet!

8-4 Play is very good, would love to see Chris guest on it

That's so funny. Whilst I'm watching the video I am literally on a plane going back to London (from Narita). Luckily my plane is pretty much empty, so I'm sitting by myself. I wish both our flights are nice and easy and we get to sleep. I too can't sleep at all on planes. Listen to "my dad wrote a porno". I'm pretty sure it's not the type of podcast you're looking for but it's hilarious. Honestly.

Milena Raschia

Looks like you need to invest in some lip-balm ;) Love your content, can't wait for the podcasts!

8-4 Play podcast, The Game Informer Show, The Giant Beastcast. They're all video game podcasts, but that's all I really listen to.

Cody Manninen

Planet Money (NPR). Invisibilia (NPR). S-Town (NPR). This American Life (NPR). RadioLab (NPR). Stuff to Blow Your Mind (How Stuff Works). Food Stuff (How Stuff Works). No Such Thing as a Fish (BBC/Qi). Even if you don't like the content, they're made by serious pros and have the presentation and editing down pat.

Michael Moore

Only podcast I listen to is Super Best Friendcast, their podcast titles alone are worth it.

My heart broke into pieces!!! I have to wait some more for this awesome move?!?!lol

Podcast . . . don't do one like Tofugu . . . do one like The Minimalists. Oh screw that . . . DO IT YOUR WAY!!! THAT WILL BE THE BEST!!!!!

Julie

I like Just Japan Podcast by Kevin O’Shea, Mac OS Ken for Apple stuff, Grumpy Old Geeks for snarky geek stuff, 2 Player Select for gaming and Japan, and PS Nation for PlayStation stuff.

In my opinion, the best podcast of all time is Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. He puts an agonising amount of time and effort into each episode, but his release schedule is very infrequent as a result. Otherwise, Joe Rogan's probably the best regular-releasing podcaster - even if you don't like his guest or topic, he's a good interviewer/presenter. The Tofugu podcast is pretty good - although they don't mind going on quite a few tangents - but most relevant to you since they discuss Japanese culture and language. Excited to hear what you put out!

Miles Gard

My podcast recommendation is "Hello Internet" by CGP Grey and Brady Haran.

Crisu

Uhh Yeah Dude - the only podcast I regularly listen to. Unbelievably funny/interesting weekly recording of a ~1 hour conversation between two old friends, looking at things they've found interesting across the week. Criminally under-rated since they were one of the first serious, regular podcasts and have been going for 10 years. Enjoy the trip home!

Hey Chris, Here’s a couple of my favorite podcasts that I listen throughout the week on my commutes to work: Lore by Aaron Mahnke Mission to Zyxx by AudioBoom Serial by This American Life StarTalk by Neil deGrasse Tyson Invisibilia by NPR Freakonomics by Stephen Dunbar They each have a unique topic, technique for delivery, and production quality used to perfectly balance educational value, while still being entertaining. Hope this helps!

Well, at least you managed to get a flight out of Haneda. I'm stuck out into Narita from Seoul/Incheon and out of Narita to Newark. No beautiful approach over Tokyo Bay with a stunning view of Fuji-san. Instead, I'll get an approach over...fields of edamame, I guess.

JBS

"The weekly planet" is a good podcast.

also did you get the pikitu train in the tsunami video that only in japan covered?

new vlog yes (Y)!
