PATREON VLOG | Thoughts on Logan Paul | Natsuki: The Movie Opening Scene

Hello everyone and welcome to Friday!

I hope your 2018 has been going well so far!

So today, I come to you with the first Patreon vlog of the year (above) - generally filled with good news and even another bonus clip from Natsuki: The Movie, in the form of the opening scene/montage.

I say generally good, because it's not all good - unfortunately, the irritating shadow of Logan Paul still lingers over most social media, and I thought I'd discuss it once and for all in this week's vlog.

Especially as I found myself dragged into it a bit, what with a) Being a vlogger in Japan and b) Being a vlogger who's visited the Aokigahara forest.

In some ways, I'm slightly bitter that I didn't make a video about it (sd all videos with "Logan" and "Paul" in the title seem to easily get a million views). But personally, I'm not sure I like the idea of having the Abroad in Japan channel contaminated with his name.

As I said in the video, I'm keen to hear your thoughts on it all, and also as I mentioned, let me know what you think about the podcast and the opening to Natsuki: The Movie!

Have a great Friday and enjoy the vlog!

Chris

youre fucking gorgeous

That looks so pro! We are looking forward to Natsuki the Movie. Whenever it comes out... Any time now. Yupp.

Love that Englishness coming out "he made a swat out of himself'. I'm English and I still say this even though I lived in Australia most my life.

Honestly Chris, I think you made the right choice by not publishing anything about that idiot on the channel. I understand it must be difficult to pass on money and views by not jumping to that wagon, but as you said he already got more publicity than he deserves out of this. You got our respect, and you only missed out on money, fame, international recognition, probably a girlfriend, free chocolate and dinner with the queen.

Unfortunately I had to have a chat with my son about that video. He didn't see it but he did like Logan. My son is very open about everything he watches so it was a good talk and he understands why it was disrespectful. I don't for one minute support his posting of the video but I did see the apology. I don't think he should have his channel banned like a lot seem to think is warranted. Yes he is an idiot but I don't think he truly knew how to deal with what he saw. I do however blame YT. From what I understand they had a real person watch it and approve it going up. How are hunting videos flagged but this wasnt? Money. YT is making bank off of people like this. They don't want to limit themselves and if anything they are encouraging this kind of crap. I want to see them punished as well.

Jeremy Carlson

its been an amazing year, thank you for everything chris

I do like the opening very much - the music is great! - and just thought if "Life is balloons" shouldn't come until - or even after - Natsuki walks with the balloons in the park and not already with the guitar scene?

Hi! Happy new year, and here's to fabulous 2018. The opening to Netsuki: The Movie is awesome and I'm looking forward to the full-length one. As for the podcast, how about having Ryotaro and/or Netsukin on as guest on a couple of episodes, and also possible a couple of episodes in Japanese (even though I don't understand a lick of Japanese. Yet). Have fun in doing up the podcast!

The Logan Paul thing is a massive shame really, i'd never heard of him before this happened and don't really feel any more enlightened now I do know of his existence.... I literally can't believe how somebody can just be so outright ignorant and be so blatantly obnoxious with such little consequence, I feel he did get off VERY lightly for everything. Especially as all he's really done was an insincere "apology" video. I mean, how long does it take someone to sit in their own house or whatever and film themselves half heartedly apologising for almost 2 MINUTES to try and take some of the heat off? Doesn't really wash i'm afraid, especially that he doesn't apologise for his awful behaviour in any of his other videos. How he has so many followers is beyond me really, but yeah, he got off too lightly and needs to be punished harder, which of course YouTube wouldn't ban his channel or anything because it probably makes them good money..... Anyway, look forward to another year of Abroad In Japan and forgetting about Logan Paul. :)

I'm taking my kids to Japan in October. I have already taught them how to use their manners in Japanese so they have a way to show respect. We are also learning how to pray at temples and shrines to show respect at Japan's sacred sites. If a couple of kids can learn to be respectful to another culture it really shows what a poor quality human Logan Paul is. Can't believe that twatmonger got off so lightly!! But enough about that turdblossom. The Natsuki movie looks great!! Love the title! Can't wait to see it all. Absolutely a job well done!!!!

Could've done with less clips from that dipshit's 'visit' to Japan. Don't publicize stupid, asinine behavior even if it's only to make a point of how idiotic it is. I appreciated your commentary however, and yes, that wanker got off way too lightly. But hey, he's probably a future President of the US in the making. Ugh.

Chris, have you thought about making all of your new youtube videos over 10 minutes so you can make extra ad revenue off of them? A simple thing like that could help you a lot in the long run.

I have had very choice, NSFW words about that freaking moron who thought it was OK to pull some of the BS that he did. I'm actually very angry about it because that crap came out not more than 3 weeks after SHINee's vocalist Jonghyun passed away after committing suicide (which hit me very hard as a korean idol music fan), and hearing about how passe he was about the suicide forest pushed my buttons. I ended up yelling at a few people who thought that what he did wasn't that bad. BUT on a more positive note!! I love the intro for Natuski the Movie!!! I'm also super excited about the podcast as well! 2018 is going to be a good year!

Barbara Smith

Really looking forward to the Podcast as they get me through my commutes everyday and I like the idea that you may delve into things that are happening in Japan. I don't suppose that the Radio DJ/Podcaster you were referring to was Pete Donaldson was it? If it is him that I'm buzzing as hes quite entertaining like yourself. Happy to hear about the channel booming in 2017 and pray 2018 only gets better!

Life is balloons! Yes! That intro was great! Positive vibes for 2018 👏🎈

Laura Beaumont

I love that into to the movie, feels vaguely familiar though... nope, can't think of it..

I love the song in the movie intro. I can't wait to see it. As for Logan Paul, I never heard of him until he was in the news but I also never watched any of the videos to see what he was like and after seeing the clips, I never will. I don't want to give him another view. He is too disrespectful. I think YouTube didn't act fast enough. However I did stumble upon you channel last year, subscribed and watched all of your videos. Liked them too. Can't wait for what you make in 2018.

Kristin Briley

Very appealing intro! Also the first one I'll replay to try and google the camera people (because you and Natsuki really feel like acquaintances now, I get this tantalizing sense of something missing if I don't know who's behind the camera... sorry if they want to stay invisible!)

Nynke de Haas

Two or three times a year, I look really forward with anticipation to a new film at the cinema.Sometimes waiting months or even years to see it.I feel the same with Life is balloons. I want to see it THAT much. No pressure :) I am sure it will be great! Will have popcorn and probably an alcoholic beverage ready...

Yeah the Gh5!

Abroad in Japan

80% sure! Probably Life is Ballons: Aka. Natsuki the Movie

Abroad in Japan

Long time watcher, first time commenter I think, well sometimes I don't remember when I have a few drinks like tonight, I wanted to say the intro is great and keep up the good work can't wait to see your work on Netflix soon ;).

Casuali_t

That intro made me smile. Thank you

Luke Richardson

Chris, my husband and I have been following you and your adventures since stumbling upon your content back in 2015. You were also one of the first channels on Youtube that I had decided to subscribe to. We feel quite honored to have the opportunity in supporting you through Patreon! I think it's awesome that you'll be starting up a Podcast soon! If you can incorporate your incite on international affairs that seem to revolve around Japan, I am absolutely all ears for that. I enjoyed your response, for example, of the North Korean missile alert that had affected you months ago. I didn't even know who Logan Paul was until I started hearing about his shenanigans just a couple days ago. As a half-Japanese American citizen who grew up with much of the Japanese culture, I'm at a total loss of words for this individual and his actions. He was beyond irreverent, and as far as I'm concerned, he's shot his credibility in the face. I wish I could bring myself to convey on here, the colorful name I had used about him today. Unfortunately, I am a firm believer in being careful with what I place in writing. Perhaps we'll have an exchange about this over tea and The Chocolate sometime! Natsuki just has this natural way of bringing joy to many of us! He brings the feeling of nostalgia and makes me really miss some of my old friends in Japan. Can't wait to indulge on his movie!! Keep being amazing and doing great things! 特に健康について、気をつけてね!

Life is balloons is the official title of the movie?

Keep up the work:)... I will travel to Japan this year :)

Hey Chris, was this filmed with your new fancy camera? it looks amazing!

First of all: Get well soon! I'm glad that youtube at least chancelled their support and the collaboration with Logan Paul. But I feel sick thinking how many people clicked his videos just because they heard of him now. I hope that the loss of his actions is higher than the profit he made of this scandal. I'm wondering why he is so popular in the first place... makes me sad that people (and youtube) support idiots like him so much. I guess he got of lightly... in my opinion youtube should just demonetize all his videos from the past and the future. Especially the Aokigahara Forest video... But enough of that person now. I'm really looking forward to your podcast. I don't usually listen to podcasts, therefore I don't have any ideas or tipps. But I'm quite interested in hearing more about Japan from you. Your voice and way of talking is really nice to listen to!

Natsuki is balloons . . . happiness and smiles. Logan Paul is the epitome of America's younger generation . . . and regretfully our American Legacy. He shames himself, he shames his family, he shames his country, he shames humanity and the world. This is what American is becoming . . . I want more Natsuki! Visiting Japan this spring for three months, looking forward to a wonderful time and researching where I would like to move. Retirement in Japan will be wonderful, thank you for all the content and laughter.

Julie

Loved the beginning of the movie, wanted to settle down and watch the whole thing.

Dr Dia

Omg I'm so tired of hearing "Logan Paul". He's a moronic twat and somehow makes money by being that way. Of course he got off too easy for what he did. I've heard he was kicked out of Japan but I hope he was banned permanently. There are not enough negative words to describe him. Ugh. Anyway. I loved the beginning of the movie! I laughed so hard when I saw the title, and it's so perfect. To be honest, I thought "Patreon Backed Film" sounded awkward. Funded? Supported? I don't know what you're getting at but it seems a little oddly expressed. But it's not like it will wreck the entire thing or whatever. It's a really good scene and I'm SO EXCITED for the movie!! (Like, you don't even know how excited we are.) Keep up the good work 👌

Just upped my pateron to the $5/mo mark, because I think you're doing a great job and deserve all the support. You are making quality work and I want you to be successful. Good luck.

Keep up the good work. I think your instincts are right on for your channel and its integrety. My wife and I really appreciate your stance on Mr. Paul too. We think you're doing well with the channel and have enjoyed your current co-hosts a lot. Maybe consider a woman co-presenter from time to time to offer a little different perspective. PS. I have not and will not dignify Mr. Paul with any views. What a waste of a human.

I love the opening! Natsuki is such a genuine guy, so enthusiastic and eager, and quick to laugh at himself. I am really looking forward to seeing the whole thing. Well done! Watching Logan Paul be rude to people just made me so angry. Japanese culture (from my experience) is quiet and respectful and he just barges in like a gigantic douche making them uncomfortable. Thank you for being normal! :)

Pam Zylik

I know you put a lot of Natsuki sayings on your merch but I think you came up with a great one yourself. I believe it was "A lake is like a big puddle that just got out of hand" you had me dying at that, but admittedly I think you making fun of the typical vlogger had something to do with that. Still, I'd buy a mug or shirt with that on it.

That vlogger is a soul-less idiot.

rafa UGM

OMG! What a disrespectful jackass!!! My husband is not convinced its a hoax still despite the fact that he's not come out and said its a hoax or the Japanese government/media saying its not real.

Lisa Rogers

I think the intro is very well done, has a nice casual feel to it and seems to represent the natsuki we know. As far as people who don't know of natsuki when seeing the first minute, I'm sure they will feel intrigued to want to watch more. Can't wait.

Matthew Crown

You have to make a t-shirt with that phrase (life is balloons). Love the opening, love the idea of a podcast. I've always wanted to get into podcast but never seemed to be able to, so you'll be the first one I follow religiously. Congratulations on your amazing 2017! And let's just forget about Logan, he's an asshole that hopefully will have some kind of consequence for his actions. At least in the long run. Keep up the good work!

Milena Raschia

Cant wait for what you have in-store for us this year Chris. And cool intro for the movie i like it.

Podcast sounds like a really great idea! Also the opening scene looks great!

Natsuki movie looks great, really captures who and what it is that he does. Being Natsuki. In regards to Logan Paul, absolutely nailed it. Just another money hungry boi who has no respect for anything or anybody~(^o^)

Zac

Podcasts became my new favourite thing in 2017 so It's brilliant that you're making one Chris! For style preferences, The True Geordie podcast or the h3h3 podcast could be good starting points! ^^

Happy New Year! =D Logan Paul is someone I'd never heard of until earlier this week and could have happily lived my life without ever knowing of. I think his videos were taken down, but there's so many videos doing commentaries, rants, etc, on it... and you just KNOW some of them are just trying to cash in on the controversy. You, and the content on your channel is better than that. (way, WAY better). Don't let the drama suck you in. If you feel the need to post a video about it, I'd just say something to that end - "not something I want on this channel. We're about learning, travel, disgusting amounts of meat, and CGI plane crashes." Podcast? Hey, now I have a reason I actually listen to podcasts! NATSUKI MOVIEEEEEE! I'm so happy the subtitle/tagline/whateverthingy is "Life Is Balloons" (please tell us you're going to add "Life Is Balloons" to the merch store...)

Yep, love that intro. As for Logan Paul, I wish YouTube would just kick him off the platform as only THAT would teach him a lesson. But they're too lenient with their "vloggers" which is disgusting really as they are being looked up to by the younger generation. I just hope it's not too late to stop other wannabee YouTubers aspiring to be just like him. But Chris, keep up the good work on your channel as both I and my other half enjoy it although I haven't yet managed to persuade him to let us visit Japan yet, but I will! I will!!

'Life is Balloons' shall be my motto for 2018. Love it! Great opening, Chris, can't wait to see the rest.

Uta

YES! I wanted that to be the title SO BAD!

JBS

Goddamn that was GREAT! very stylish

David

I follow you because you make me laugh and the respect you show to the Japanese people and culture is brilliant. You are a credit to our country. I can't wait for the movie and I do hope the podcast comes off, epic job mate

Have you ever considered another platform other than YouTube? As an engineer and avid video watcher I believe that YouTube as a platform is going downhill fast. Patreon should partner with another video platform. I’m quitting my Red subscription next month and would rather send the money to creators I admire.

Lyn Dee

Their algorithms work but the humans don’t. Really disappointed, agree that he got off with a pinch rather than a slap on the hand.

Lyn Dee

Life is, indeed, balloons. Well, sometimes. Watching the movie intro, I realised that it's hard to comment on it objectively, because Natsuki just makes me smile, whatever he's doing. But it does look good.

Sheepless

Like others, I'd never heard of Logan Paul, and since the hullabaloo, I've never even tried to find the video. It sounded as if it was in such poor taste, I wouldn't want to sully my eyes or waste my time on such trash. I'm interested in the podcast idea, though it is such a very different media than I'm accustomed to from you. Watching amusing and informative videos about Japan vs listening to you discuss topics other than Japan sounds like an interesting endeavor, one that will help you stretch to new horizons once you are no longer in Japan, I suppose.

The only real podcast I listen to religiously is Joe Rogan. I'd have a look at his for some examples and ideas. His can be long, like 2 hours. But they are him and a guest and they talk about news and contemporary issues. It's usually a worthwhile listen. It's on your usual iTunes and podcast formats but they also film it and stick it on YouTube. Best of luck!

Holy shit! I couldn't be more excited for Natsuki The Movie after seeing that intro. Screw Avengers Infinity War, Life Is Balloons is the most anticipated film of 2018.

Loved hearing your view on the idiot whose name i'm sick of hearing. Can't wait for the podcast - i listen to podcasts almost everyday because it takes me an hour to get to work so i need something interesting to keep me awake! Can't wait for Natsuki the movie!!! Like a magic!

Brigitte Marie

Podcasts are a great way to talk about current events and such that you wouldn't necessarily want to make a YouTube video about. Some other vloggers I have been watching use their podcasts (not as the main purpose) to speak about issues that come up like the Logan Paul horridness. It's a good way to discuss it personally and honestly, without calling the attention to it that a video would. And it tends to feel more like a personal discussion. On a separate note, I can't wait for Natsuki The Movie! The opening looks great!

Sophie Counsil

Looks great! Appetite.... whetted.

Really looking forward to the Podcast! Perfect platform for more in-depth discussions and looking at topics that don't necessarily translate well to video. I think you're right about going the conversation route, if a podcast's hosts have a comfortable rapport together it can really build up a dedicated following. I think it'll be great hearing your take on current issues in Japan. For years I followed a China-based one called the Sinica Podcast, which was run out of Beijing by two long-term expats and became quite prominent both amongst the expat community in China as well as the China-watching and academic community overseas. They would generally have a topic for the week, and came to blend a conversational style incorporating their experiences, opinions and humour, and interviews with an invited guest who had particular knowledge of the topic. I think part of what made it so popular was the hosts' personalities and humour, rapport with each other, as well as knowledge and genuine interest about the topics. (It's still going these days, though is I think changed somewhat from it's hey-day a number of years ago as both hosts have moved overseas now.) Best of luck with it, I can't wait to listen!

Great start to the Natsuki movie and can't wait for the full release! I'd never heard of Logan Paul before the incident and wish that was still the case. I haven't even been curious enough to go and watch any of his videos and after watching clips like the ones in your video I'd rather not give him the views. I always think its funny that some YouTube stars get so big yet I don't hear about them, despite the fact I visit YouTube quite a bit, it was the same with PewDiePie. YouTube's algorithms must work!

Holy crap! Natsuki has a last name! 夏樹は姓を持っていますか? 素晴らしい!

You got Akasan? Haha

Daniel Parkinson

Very Nice Opening from Natsuki the Movie. I'm really looking forward to the movie

Your vlogging setup looks so good now! The new camera and lighting are working magic. Also did you just subtly drop the actual title for Natsuki The Movie on us at the end there?

Harry Bonyari

Loved the opening! Did put a smile on my face! As for Logan Paul the less people talk about him, the better.

Nem Elsay

It's definitely something I'll take on board when drawing up plans! It's likely I won't be editing the podcasts so it shouldn't get in the way!

Abroad in Japan

Intro is soooo awesome! 超すごい!

I literally cannot wait to watch this doc! Opening looks awesome. Very excited to see what’s coming from the channel this year. I’ve refused to watch anything regarding Logan Paul because well i’d rather keep disrespectful cretins off my radar. YouTube pussied out in my opinion by not removing him from the platform, clearly they put money over morals. Shame on them.

The intro looks great! I cannot wait to see it alongside everything else you have in store for us this year!

I'm a little worried about a podcast. CGPGrey used to make plenty of videos, then they started taking longer and longer while he uploaded podcasts. I just hope the podcasts don't interfere with the videos.

Nope

Honestly, I can't wait for Natsuki the movie. I'm so excited for it! And I'm glad that Chris talked about the Logan Paul situation.
