Hello everyone and welcome to 2018!
First off I'd like to wish you all a Happy New Year! May your wildest dreams come true in 2018! (Within reason).
I'm looking forward to making this another year packed full of videos and sarcasm, with larger scale projects and forays into producing documentary style videos, short films, and also experimenting more as a vlogger (which basically means walking around filming myself while holding a camera).
But most importantly, the amazing news is we've finally finished filming Natsuki: The Movie! (No I can’t believe it either).
We needed one last scene of Natsuki performing the song he'd written with his band and we finally got it several days ago in a music venue buried under a foot of snow in rural Yamagata.
Our journey which began a year ago when we hit our Patreon goal, has finally come full circle, with a story that has spanned the last six months.
All that remains now is to edit the last scenes into the film (it’ll take a week) and then have at least a one week run-up to promote the video and make sure people actually watch it!
With that in mind, the release date is going to be Friday 26th January! So put it in your diary, tell your family and friends and get the popcorn in.
In other less good news, I’ve spent today and yesterday responding to people asking me what I think about an incident that occurred several days ago.
It wasn’t a great way to start the year, opening up Twitter and receiving a flood of comments about Logan Paul, the vlogger who’d filmed himself discovering a body in the Aokigahara (Suicide) Forest.
It seems the popular vlogger, with an audience of 15m subscribers (mostly kids) felt compelled to not only film the suicide victim, but go on and make jokes and chuckle amongst his idiotic friends, whilst the poor guy quite literally dangled from the tree before them.
The whole event left me feeling pretty sad.
Sad that the person had taken their life on New Year’s Eve in a state of hopelessness, only to be discovered by a band of morons hours later and exploited without hesitation.
Sad that the video had half a million likes from enthusiastic viewers, who derived excitement and pleasure from the video.
Sad that the video somehow stayed up for hours, without Youtube intervening, whilst smaller channels are suspended without hesitation for far less serious matters. (Unsurprising, given that Logan Paul’s channel generates millions of dollars of ad-revenue for the company annually).
I don't want to waste much energy acknowledging Logan Paul, suffice to say I was shocked and appalled as everyone else, albeit not surprised; if you have a look through his previous videos you'll find human decency, compassion and morals were thrown out of the window for views and profit a long time ago.
More worryingly, with the trajectory Youtube is heading in, this is the direction more and more younger generations will turn to. Where shocking, outrageous content is swiftly rewarded with clicks, views and ad-revenue and thus actively encouraged.
Allowing top-tier creators to film such horrific scenes, only to profit from it without consequence is certainly setting a very dangerous and worrying precedent for the future of social media and online entertainment.
I was torn with whether or not to make a video on it, but quite honestly, I want to forget it happened.
I want to forget about Logan Paul, Jake Paul; anyone from the dynasty of Paul.
And I apologise if you’ve only just learned about it all having read this post. Learning who they are and what they do isn’t a great way to start your New Year admittedly.
But just as you discover who they are and swiftly lose your faith in humanity as I did, just remember, Natsuki: The Movie is coming out this month!
There is hope after all guys.
