Hey folks!
It's time for "THROWBACK FRIDAY", where every week l introduce a video from the Abroad in Japan channel from years ago, that you've probably never heard of, and talk a bit about it from a behind the scenes perspective.
This week: 2014's Japanese thoughts on British Snacks video, where Natsuki made his debut by eating a packet of crisps and doing a questionably good magic trick.
"Cheese taste 50:50. Onion taste 45. Good percent."
- Natsuki reviewing Crisps
Having met Natsuki six months prior to the video, I realised that this was a man that needed to be put in front of a camera, and having received my annual box load of British goods from back home (literally just a box stuffed full of chocolate and crisps), it was the perfect opportunity to put his reviewing abilities to the test.
I trudged through the snowy winter streets and handed him a packet of Cheese and Onion Walkers crisps and a Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolate bar and a star was born.
At the time of posting the video, the channel had about 5,000 subscribers, but after a delighted viewer posted the video to Reddit and it went viral, the video hit 100,000 views by the end of the day.
Natsuki's fan base was subsequently born; no doubt won over by his playful childlike innocence and carefree mentality.
The only problem we had afterwards was numerous viewers had noticed his finger nails were pretty much black - something I hadn't noticed during filming - and soon a wave of comments came along, proclaiming him as some kind of dirty peasant.
ALAS, it was my fault for forgetting to point out Natsuki owns a beauty salon and had spent most of the day working with black hair dye (which is an absolute nightmare to clean off).
Nonetheless, having read the comments, Natsuki didn't handle it overly well, and he's been self conscious about cleaning his finger nails thoroughly before filming to this day.
