It's time for "THROWBACK THURSDAY", where every week l introduce a video from the Abroad in Japan channel from years ago, that you've probably never heard of, and talk a bit about it from a behind the scenes perspective.
This week; 2015's original Hate Mail video! A video that'll always hold a special place in my heart. After all, it's not everyday you're able to monetise hate.

So these days for some strange reason, I rarely receive hate mail. Perhaps it's something to do with Youtube kicking off online bullies or people that are just generally shit, or the world just got nicer (...)
But there was a time when the hate came in thick and fast, and by Spring 2015, I finally decided to jump on the bandwagon and do what everyone else was doing - reading out comments from people who'd gone out of their way to send insults.
After going through a few hundred comments, I whittled them down to the whackiest and craziest I could find, deciding that hate comments such as "Go kill yourself" were probably too difficult to extract jokes from.
We had comments from people telling me I sounded like Pitbull to viewers blaming me for the American revolutionary war, and even serial haters like some guy called Daniel Perez who went through half a dozen videos firing off comments like "Great example of somebody who sucks at life."
All in all it was hilarious fun and we even had a cameo from Rachel (Rachel and Jun)!
Best of all though, the video proved a surprising hit, getting above average views for the channel at the time.
As a result, I was able to put the Youtube ad-revenue towards a much needed holiday away to Taiwan, where I stuffed myself silly with food and drink for 5 days, knowing with every mouthful that it had been funded from ad-revenue derived from haters.
And ridiculous as it sounds, it was a pretty great life lesson; it taught me that even in shitty situations with awful people, good things can still come from it if you play it to your advantage.
Even hate from online bullies can be converted into entertainment! (And noodles).

Wow, I was watching this video just as the notification came out! Just recently discovered your channel and podcast, which the Mrs and I watch and listen to all the time.
