(*New Video*) Where's the Best Place to Live in Japan?

Hey guys,

So last week my debut on NHK World took place - a tv show about Japanese rural cuisine called Savor Japan. I initially participated in the show with the hope it would bring me fame and fortune, and signify my launch into the world of Japanese tv.

Unfortunately, for anyone that watches it, you'll quickly find it's anything but the case - the painfully slow NHK WORLD editing style makes it a struggle to watch, and whoever edited it doesn't seem to understand English well - given that I seemed to be cut off mid sentence at times during the show, in an almost comical fashion.

I wouldn't have minded about all this - however, as part of the agreement, I had to promote the show through my social media, meaning I had to actively promote my own embarrassment.

Hence last week I quickly scripted and filmed this week's video about the best place to live in Japan and quietly slotted it in at the end.

On the upside I learned a valuable lesson.
- Avoid Japanese tv!

Sorry for the extra comment, but I went back to watch some more of the clip. It's cool that there seems to be some interest in Italian food. I'd be curious to try a Japanese take on something I grew up eating. :P

Not gonna lie, I found the segment quite relaxing, despite the editing being somewhat reminiscent of a PBS documentary on VHS. If you hadn't pointed out that you got cut off, I'm not sure I would have noticed. :) Don't worry too much, aha.

Ah, pickles. haha :)

I watched the whole piece, Chris, and I agree with Jason B., above. Seen as a guest, you come off fine. Yes, it was oddly edited for my taste, and I thought it odd how you seemed to be speaking English to the air, when you clearly speak Japanese. Were the various contacts completely in Japanese, with your English "Added"? It also seemed as though you were walking into the scenes from nowhere. "All press is good press"

I tend to like watching NHK World anyway, so this fits right in with their style. Not everything needs to be punchy and fast-paced. And I kind of "get" the POV concept, that we the (English-speaking) audience need somebody to identify with, in not knowing much about the place and needing somebody to come teach us. If you say too much it sounds like you know too much, and it breaks the audience's connection to that representative.

[looks around] [wonders if anybody else read "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"] ........ Actually, I quite liked it.

Yeah they need to be a bit punchier and fast paced. We filmed some great stuff but the editor either cut it out or didn't put it together in a compelling way. Japanese production team producing for foreigners - it just doesn't seem to work.

I'm a JIBTV monitor, which means I get to watch all their programs and submit reviews. I have said on many occasions how unappealing it is that they edit their programs in a way that they remind you of corporate videos made in the 80s.

Well I was going to watch it, but now that you say it was a source of embarrassment for you, I'd rather not. I'm sure they desecrated your style of humour. Not worth watching.

Chantal Ward

Interesting to see a contrast in style and tone, like watching a Youtuber group video.

Your humor was on point this video, but so was your passion for the countryside. Kudos!

Having watched about half of it, it feels a bit like they are doing it only for the social media exposure.

Johannes

That makes sense. I was a bit confused having struggled through it why you mentioned it in the video.

I can see why you aren't a fan of how this was edited. They seem to have cut out everything of intrest you might have said. At least you learnt something from the experience

They could have made it entertaining as the spicy pickle burned my mouth out and I was flailing around gasping for water comically. BUT NO. Had to be serious.

Thanks for the info and insight.

I love how when I read your posts I read them in your cynical tone lol

Yea the editor choosing to open with the pickle museum was a bold choice. How were the other two flavors they cut out?

P.S. This feral cat I befriended yesterday, sums up my general feelings towards this TV experience.
