How I Produce Videos | From Start to Finish (*Patreon Exclusive*)

Hey everyone - I hope you’re having a fine week so far!

So two things today!

FIRSTLY you can now watch the new video "How I Produce Videos: From start to finish” where I cover everything from equipment and music, to ideas, scripting and tips and advice on Youtube.

Hopefully it’ll be useful to anyone considering becoming a vlogger, and entertaining in some way for those of you wondering about behind the scenes.

It's available here: https://youtu.be/VRSN9AUnM0A

SECONDLY, one of the most asked questions I get is why I moved to Japan. One year ago I answered this question finally, in a video I made to celebrate the launch of Patreon, which I never released to the channel and never planned to.

Yet today, more than ever, I seem to receive more emails and private messages from viewers than ever, looking for careers advice and asking what made me come here.

This week I realised it was a subject matter that needed to be dealt with once and for all - on the one hand, so I don’t need to answer the question again - and secondly, because I see so many people in their early 20’s make awful career decisions, in that terrifying “Fuck I don’t know what I’m going to do with my life” moment, having just finished education and I hope my own experiences can help people in that regard.

With that in mind, I’ve re-edited the “Why I Moved to Japan” video and uploaded it to the channel; I didn’t take the decision lightly, given that I’m far more personal in this video than usual (even out of character with a lack of sarcasm!).

But I also originally made it with the intent only Patreon supporters would see it - not the public domain.

Just to be clear, this isn’t something I plan to do again; two days ago I posted the long list of exclusive Patreon content and neither anything on that list or any of the many things to come will be leaving the realms of Patreon like this again.

Videos like “How I Learned Japanese” and tonight’s “How I Produce videos” and upcoming videos won’t ever be going on the channel.

After all, the main reason I enjoy Patreon is it gives me the chance to reward you guys with whatever I can as a thanks for helping us make the videos.

If you have any questions about either of today’s videos though, ask away below!

This month is a busy month with many videos, but I’ll tell you about the wonders of August in a separate post!

Enjoy!
Chris

This video was 100% worth becoming a Patreon and it's going to help me so much with my adventure in Japan on my exchange trip in a month! Thank you for the amazing content Chris! <3

Thanks for the video Chris. A couple of questions: 1. You once mentioned that you prefer Premier over Final Cut because you use its color grading features a lot. Could you lay out your color grading process? 2. In this video you sometimes used J-cuts to make the jump cuts smoother. How do you decide on which transitions to take, both for audio and video? 3. Except watching 'Now You See it', do you have any recommendations on YouTube channels, books, blogs and other resources for learning cinematography? Thanks a lot!

Hi Chris, the "Why I moved..." video was a real punch in the nose for me, too. About a year ago, I had a fantastic opportunity to move to Japan, but had a family situation that prevented that. I sort of feel like it's "the one that got away". The family situation is much different now and I'm thinking of giving another go at finding another opportunity, but do you think it'd be tough as a mid career professional (in my late 30s, with a family) to go? It seems like most that go are younger folks looking for some self-discovery.

Your video editing skills have become really awesome. Better and better each time. I think you make it look easy but I can only imagine the massive amount of footage you sort through to put it all together. Hey maybe you should make a funny Ryotaro blooper outtakes video! :D

For the channel uploads, I think the way you did it is fine (much later, re-edited and on a very particular subject), so I wouldn't mind if it happened again. Yeah it would kinda devaluate the Patreon bonus if it would happen many times, but as an exception and also with the way you did it, to me it's fine. I also appreciate that we got an explanation because even though it didn't really bug me (in fact it made me re-watch the video), it had opened a question in my mind. So, thanks for taking care of us!

Glad the videos have helped you over the years Lulu - as for what I do after Japan, I'm honestly not sure to be honest. There's always been this expectation, that I would live and work around the world though. It'd be awesome to live in another country, but it's at least 3 or 4 years off from now I'd say!

This is really special. Thank you.

Thank you, Chris, we appreciate all the content but the exclusive bits make us feel special

Hey Chris. Thanks for the video posted today to your YouTube channel. What you said resonated with me a lot so I decided to become a supporter here. Any chance you could share some videos of the talks you've done? If I've missed them, could someone enlighten me where to find them?

I can't speak for everybody, but I personally really don't mind if you make the "excluve patreon stuff" public later. On the contrary, I think it would be a waste not to get some of the great content to wider audience. Keep up the awesome work!

P.S. Bring back Tokyo Cat Man!!!! #teamcatman

I think you've already said why you moved to Japan, but maybe in bits and pieces. I remember the sucky office job and flight where the couple told you about their daughter. Can you believe it's been 5 years? Your channel has given hope to a lot of people, including me. Currently I'm recovering from injury and really missing Japan. I don't know how it will all work out, but I can't wait to move there permanently. You've mentioned perhaps leaving Japan one day. Do you have an idea of what you'd like to do/where you go after Japan?

Thanks!

I have never attempted to make a video, but it is amazing to see the detail in the work and the sheer creativity that is involved. Taking inspiration helps, but it still takes a dedicated mind to come up with the ideas, the camera angles, the right music and the original dialog. Loved every video Chris. Keep up the great work. I know it is inspiring others like me. Seeing Japan through your lenses and insight greatly helped me with my two trips to Japan. Great post!

I'm just so damn humble, that I'm happy to have anything more than 450 subscribers. (Also I didn't notice).

Just noticed your Twitter bio says " 450+ subscribed)". Did you mean 450k+? I mean it's not wrong, I just think 450k+ may be more accurate :D

"I see so many people in their early 20’s make awful career decisions, in that terrifying “Fuck I don’t know what I’m going to do with my life” " --- I'm 34 and going through that right now! haha. Truth be told, I regret not leaving the UK and doing something abroad, even temporary. Now with kids I feel more tied down than ever. I have started learning Japanese and plan to visit for the first time next year. You're videos have been a huge help with where to start with studying so thanks for that.
