Upcoming Video | How I Learned Japanese: 2 Years in Detail

Hey folks!

I hope you're all having a good weekend so far! I've got three things to discuss with you all today!

Firstly, I've just returned from a trip to film with Natsuki, where we filmed his final English lesson before his upcoming adventure to the UK (similar to the one from last month). It was equally as hilarious, if not more so than before. Natsuki's brilliantly creative mind never ceases to amaze me.

Whilst filming in the UK in late May, we'll also be uploading some behind the scenes footage of the trip on to here for you guys so keep an eye out for that!

In the mean time, please help us to shape the movie by taking part in this questionnaire!

Secondly, the Patreon exclusive "How I Learned Japanese: 2 Years in Detail" is now finished! It's the longest video I've ever made at just under 30 mins in legnth.

However, it is absolutely crammed with tools, tips and advice, as well as being presented chronologically through my own personal journey of learning the language! I also expect it will be the last video I ever make about learning Japanese! It'll be released to you all (Patreon exclusive) on Tuesday (2nd).

Thirdly, while you wait for the video, check out my favourite documentary set in Japan! Some call it depressing - others uplifting - but for me it's a remarkably personal story about life in Japan.

The documentary has a special place in my heart, because not only is it set in Yamagata - the region I called home for 3 years - BUT I actually met Naoki, the main subject of the documentary, at karaoke in Yamagata city about 3 years ago. He's a truly wonderful guy.

(Note: It's not available on Youtube mobile for some reason).

Finally, if you haven't seen the latest Abroad in Japan video with Ryotaro and I meeting Foxes and nearly dying in a blizzard, check that out here!

Thanks folks and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

This was a really brilliant video Chris, very useful. I've been looking for a comprehensive account lf wondering if

Looking forward to it.

Johannes

Looking forward to it 😊

Thanks for the heads up ^_^

*UPDATE* As the video is just over 27 minutes long it's taking a little while to upload and process. It's 3:30am here, so I'm gonna hit the hay and upload it first thing when I wake up! Sorry about that folks - it's by far the longest video I've ever made! It didn't dawn on me Youtube would take so long to process it! Still, I'm pretty happy with the finished video! There's about 20+ tools and resources featured, and I'm going to put them all into a list with links, to attach with the video as well.

Abroad in Japan

I totally forgot that I have such a machine for that in my basement, okay, I'll see you in a couple of hours of the timer doesn't break again xD

Well Japanese people are already quite private about relationships so I guess they won't show any in front of a camera XP I think they love each other in their own way, else they wouldn't be together :p

You should have tried to cryogenicly freeze yourself as I did :P

A few more hours to go!

Abroad in Japan

It's Tuesday (2nd), where is the video? ^^ I've been patiently waiting for the past days since I saw your message :3

That's a part about Japan I had never heard of nor seen before xo

That documentary. Wow. I hope Naoki is doing good these days. Or if anything at least closer to his girlfriend and her family.

I watched the documentary. What an emotional rollercoaster. Thank you for mentioning it Chris.

Dieke Reitsma

Hey Chris, Any idea how Noaki is doing now a days?

Given that you can see this post, it means you're at the right tier for it! ($2+)

Abroad in Japan

Hey Chris, I am super excited about this learning Japanese video, thank you for putting it together. Is it patreon-exclusive for your patrons at all levels? Or will I need to try jump on a higher tier this month?

On pins and needles for that Japanese language video. I understand why it's the last one. You've given us lots of advice and resources already. At some point, we have to stop looking up vids of how to learn Japanese and just freaking learn it, right? (I've been flirting with kanji for months. May as well dive in and drown, eh?)

I saw the youtube video about a month ago and was really taken aback. What a really heartfelt guy who kinda "gets it" the rat-race the BS that corporate life can throw up. His living condition is pretty harsh as well - heard he is recovering from cancer. So glad you got to meet him Chris; hope he was every bit as earnest as he was in the video.

Holy hell...that was both good and incredibly heart breaking. The situation is bad for both of them. I can't really say why she would keep him around as it seems like she doesn't love him. She tortures him with her biting comments...didn't come off as a great person. And correct me if I'm wrong...but she's an escort right?

Jeremy Carlson

Oh wow, coincidentally I watched that very same YouTube video (the documentary) a few days ago. I was already thinking Naoki looks a bit like Chris' friend in the "teaching swear words" video.

Last video on learning Japanese? I mean, I understand, there's not a lot left for you to say. But it's still a shame to hear you say it, as the learning Japanese videos were some of the first vids of yours I ever watched.

Ryan Wolf

I just finished watching the documentary, and god damn, what a ride. I've read about working conditions and the "working poor" of Japan, but seeing it like this, hearing Naoki and Yoshie's thoughts, felt so raw and emotional. Truly an enriching watch. Thank you for sharing -- I hope the two are doing better today.

Oh man, I watched the whole documentary! It's a must see if you really want to know about Japan. Everything has its ups and downs .

Since I keep yelling about Edinburgh and you even mentioned an interest on the livestream heres a list of spots to hit up if you only have a day. (And if you need a shitty tour guide hit me up xD) Edinburgh Castle (Obvious one) National Museum -Near castle, has a rooftop terrace for good view Greyfrairs Kirk -Graveyard opposite museum entrace, 'Voldermort's grave' and Greyfrairs Bobby which is basically Scottish Hachikō. (Maybe best done as the evening ghost tour) Royal Mile -back towards castle, this runs from the Castle down to Holyrood Palace St Giles' Cathedral -On the way down Royal Mile, beautiful church/free entry. Also just outside on the ground is the 'Heart of midlothian', make sure to spit on it for good luck! (Yeah, it's pretty gross.) Calton Hill - great view over Edinburgh, some cool stuff to look at there too Arthur's Seat -better view of the city than Calton Hill but more effort to venture up, take your pick of the two really Princes Street -Might as well get Natsuki to recreate the opening of Trainspotting right?
