When a Trip Goes From Good to Unforgettable | Abroad in Japan Blog | #3

Hey guys! Happy Sunday!

First off, apologies about the delay on the article - there were a few technical issues with the computer the last few days and it's finally been resolved. It's knocked back the schedule a few days, but the wheels are in motion once again.

In this week's article, I talk about some fun and memorable encounters I've had with people in my time in Japan - I'm sharing them with the hope they'll encourage shy readers to push themselves to meet new people, as you never know where it may lead.

Two days ago I met with Natsuki and we filmed the Q&A session using your questions  - it was pretty funny and the video will be out in the next 10 days!

This week also sees the release of the first Abroad in Japan stories video (again delayed from it's original day of the 15th, to later in the week), about what led me to move to Japan in the first place.

As of tomorrow I'm filming in Okinawa for a few days with Odigo travel - and I'll be joined by Rachel and Jun, Uwaga Pies, Chris Okano and Kim Dao.  I'm looking forward to it, as it's my first time in Okinawa - expect a video and lots of pictures to follow.

Finally, I'm also toying with the idea of a second channel, with more vlog style videos - aka, walking around with a camera and using less editing.  I think it could be fun, but I'll only do it if I think it'll be any good. Personally, I find vlogs difficult to watch so I've been hesitant to do it myself. If I do it, it'll be piloted through Patreon first though, so you'll be on the front line if the vlog does happen and your feedback could well decide the fate of the concept.

But before all that, it's bed time. It's gone midnight and I've got to get up at silly o'clock for the flight.

If you guys have an y stories or interesting interesting encounters from your travels, let us all know in the comments section! It'd be great to hear some stories!

I share your sentiment about vlogs being hard to watch. The shaky cam, the overwhelming sense of artificiality as people try too hard to appear to naturally do something that's film-worthy... I'll be interested to see how yours go. I still hope AiJ is still the primary focus, though. Please don't become just another vlog channel. D=

"I'm also toying with the idea of a second channel, with more vlog style videos - aka, walking around with a camera and using less editing" I think this would be great. Your edited videos have their own unique stamp on them ofc, but I would also appreciate a street-view/raw type of style vid.

The idea of a second vlogging channel sounds like a great idea.

I support the idea of a vlog channel, so long as you didn't enforce a ridiculous amount of content, like once a day, or four times a week, or something. Vlogs are nice, but I'd hate to see it cut into your main channel's content. Quality is always better than quantity, and that's the leg up you have on many other popular channels. That, and you're funny and stuff.

I haven't traveled in any meaningful way since I was about 12, and none of the stories are particularly interesting or fun for me to share, but I hope to have more in the future, I really do want to travel more in Europe and Asia, particularly Norway, Italy, Japan and the Middle East (When it's a bit more stable), here's to hoping for that to become true, I'm still young, got the whole of my life ahead of me!

Yay for the Vlog channel!

Vlogging would be an absolute hit on your channel. Viewers are always looking for more fun and great content and this would provide a good fix!

Good article Chris. I can see why a night like that with a beautiful woman would be unforgettable. Was this one the one that might have gotten away? There is something to ponder. I remember in one of your videos, I believe the suicide forest one, that you mention a girlfriend...I'm just curious if you are single or not. Is it difficult being a foreigner to get a date? Easier?

Jeremy Carlson

I absolutely agree on this one, well said.

For me the thing that makes a good vlog is the vloggers personality, you sir are a fine example of Her Majesties British sarcasm so any vlog you make will be golden! And as always, a brilliant blog to boot.

When in Nara, randomly looking for a place to have lunch, my friends and I stumbled into a jazz bar. Not the sort of place I expected to end up in during my first visit! It had stacks of records in shelves along the walls, and one playing on a turntable. It was fairly small and somewhat dark, and with how it was furnished I bet in the evening it captures something of the feel of a New Orleans club. My Japanese was good enough that I was able to translate so we could talk to the owner, a lady named Kimura-san, who explained quite simply that she'd always been a big fan of jazz, and quite simply, Nara didn't have a place for it: and so she opened one some thirty years ago. She and her son were quite friendly, but spoke pretty much zero English, and so it was a good exercise for me too. Later that evening we stopped in Osaka for dinner, at some restaurant in a department store near the train station. The amusing bit there was when the well-dressed host came out to ask in English, and I replied "san-nin desu," and he clutched his chest and stumbled back as if having a heart attack. Definitely the most memorable day of the trip!

I wouldn't say no to a vlog, being a nosey bastard and that 😉

Yvette

Would definitely like to see vlog videos. A seperate channel for them sounds like a good idea.

Looking forward to the Okinawa Video!
