here's the process for the last one! you can kinda see how i block things in beforehand, i try to start with a rough direction and intensity of the light (depending on the background). here it was fairly simple, just an overhead light in a dark room, which means everything facing up gets lighter and everything facing down gets darker. also leaves room for things like bounce light which is fun.

another thing i like to do is add transition colors, which you can see me do just after the block-in (that orangey tone). adding a redder or more saturated tone where the light changes can help to convey "subsurface scattering", or the effect of blood scattering light under the skin, which makes skin feel much more lively (since the lack of that effect is perceived as a corpse or a mannequin in the real world).  tones are the secret sauce of my renders and im very particular about where i put em.

i dont like using blend tools/airbrush much either except in very specific circumstances, i find they mess with my color transitions and make things muddier than they should be. i use a hard round brush with opacity control for my renders that gives things sort of a layer cake look. this helps me control my shapes of color more accurately.
