It's showtime (New server update)
Added 2021-04-18 11:02:56 +0000 UTCHey Everyone,
I'm writing this post before jumping into the car and being on my way to the Datacenter.
The new server is installed, configured and ready to kick ass!
I've made some changes to the hardware since the last update. They are as follows:
- PSU: Replaced with ASPOWER R2A-DV0550-N redundant 2U power supply.
- FAN: The two fans in the middle have been replaced with higher CFM models
My reasoning behind the PSU is that I wasn't confident in the ability to keep the PSU cooled. It's fan would be blocked off by the top case and it would be left to dissipate heat through its housing. The new PSU is redundant and also has PMBus support which means we can monitor it's performance and detect failures.
The original PSU (Seasonic PX-550) will be returned and refunded
The new fans keep the CPU cooled below 80c, this directly impacts performance as higher temperatures reduce the current leakage in the CPU. In testing this results in about 80Mhz higher clocks while hitting our 90W hard-limit. (~2.5% clockspeed increase)
This was tested with a prime95 800k-4M FFT run, part of the 24 hour stability test.
Here are some results after 24 hours, this is with an ambient of about 23c (73F):

(* Just using windows as it made my life testing hardware a little bit easier, we run Linux in production! No worries)
Here are two benchmarks:

In about 2 hours the old server will be put offline, when the new server comes up (~10 minutes after) the homepage should say "(You're connected to the new server - v11)".
That is if I did everything correct :)
Enjoy!
