As far as Ozpin's handling of things goes...this man has a trauma rooted deeply at the core of his being of a magnitude none of us can comprehend. Having to relive it in 4D Technicolor must've been incredibly painful. This is all about how people respond to fear; Ozpin leaving was his response, Ironwood is currently showing his own version.
