Go.com (Second Gate)

Disney + early consumer internet. With Michael Eisner at the helm, what could go wrong?

My school banned all non-educational websites and disneychannel.com with it. People were really REALLY pissed myself included

Libby

It’s the Zootopia equivalent run by bird haberdashers.

Garlicnaut

Mr. Incredible would be my top pick. Edna Mode also has a certain Dr. Ruth energy.

Garlicnaut

“Gantu, where’s my bologna?”

Garlicnaut

Disney was big into those freeware “screenmates”. I had Stitch and Kuzco (how my mother didn’t murder me I don’t know). Around 2005, they also had a virtual machine of sorts that covered your whole desktop in themes from the latest soon-to-be-classics like Tim Allen’s “Shaggy Dog” remake and “Herbie Fully Loaded”. I put so much spyware on the family PC.

Garlicnaut

if you polled my middle school class the 625 sandwich stacker would unanimously come out as the best video games to ever exist

Louis IV

I've got a bumper sticker that says "Honk-shoo if you're asleep at the wheel" (made by a great lil shop in Portland), so other Honk shoo weirdos are out there :)

Erika Schnatz

You are right banks do have an archaic system nicknamed "the dark side" which is an old early stage Internet program that can be used using text commands to open and close accounts and do other things. Yes major banks still have their backends built around this and it is incredibly scary when I learned this during my brief stint as a personal banker.

Jake Alleruzzo

That tickled me too 😂

Rosie P

Yeah I was very amused by Rob Plays being mentioned followed almost immediately by mentioning Midway to Mainstreet and having never heard of it.

Scott Mitchell

DisneyWar is a wild book. I feel like I came away from it knowing less about Eisner than I did before reading lol. But yeah, his awful decisions in the latter half of his tenure scream "massive amounts of coke at all times."

Ding ding ding

Podcast The Ride

Somewhere in the Pinocchio ride?

Tim St Aubin

never been to a disney park but my guess is that somewhere in there is a depiction of cruella de vil smoking a cigarette

Alec

Thirded!

Jonathon Pernisek

Seconded

Evan

Now let’s go from Disney War to Disney VORE, i.e. the bawdier term for inflation-type stuff

Philip Ehlke

I was gonna say It wasn’t Stitch (who was experiment 626) it was his prototype! The experiment before him

Miguel Sandoval

I really love the second gate theme tune 💕

MC

Hell yeah! 625 Sandwich Stacker reference!

Matthieu Drotar

Jake’s Booty Call needs Eva Anderson after all the time she gave Get Played for Leisure Suit Larry

Jessica

All this early internet talk has me reminded of Zoog Disney and now I need to know their take on it

Jordon Catalan

But it was Jess who said it first on the Disneyland app episode, not Jason! He was just the one who understood 😄😂

Becca Gilgan

“At the state fair he did balloon stuff with all of our guys”

GirlDicta

Checking in to say I hope everyone in the LA area is safe. Thinking of y’all ❤️

Margarita Javier

I’m currently in the middle of my first read through Disney War and like… Surely Eisner was just doing a bucket load of coke???

velocircasstor

Both DisneyWar and Keys to the Kingdom are on my shelf in my office, so I can prove to everyone that much like Mr. Eisner, I am on the cutting edge.

Emma Chapple

Coming to voice my support of Jason saying “honk shew” for snoring. I’ve always done that too!

Ryan Spruce

Rob plays is midway to mainstream actually!

Kristi Stokes

625 aka Reuben

Nathaniel Lovin

A lot going on in the Sting CD-ROM, apparently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BgdZmfTpxE&list=PLNjwjylcskB8pbG7J4LNv_TCI0zKKpacf&index=1

Jonathon Pernisek

I think midway to main street is what Rob Plays renamed his channel?

Rosie P

I went to go download an audiobook copy of the Disney war and it’s 25 hours long.

Beefer Sutherland

Scrooge McDuck would be the best Disney ED pill spokesman. “I may be an old duck, but I’m not a lame duck. McDuck’s McDick is always up for an adventure!” Cut from Scrooge scowling in his mansion to clips from various Ducktales and Barksian adventures.

Ben

Aerostale

Sam

Also the film near the very end you didn't know the title of is Food Fight.

WaitWhat

If you are doing an episode of Jake's Booty Call soon, just title the episode Eisner's Booty Call just to hit the point home.

OMG, the memory of playing that Stitch sandwich game unlocked after being tucked away in some memory hole for YEARS.

Haley Kessler

Not in an expert on most things but my career does involve bank security and their infrastructure. You would be lucky if the underlying code running the banks computer systems was from the early 2000! Most banks are still running mainframe code from the 70s. The last time it was actually looked at was around turn of the century to fix the Y2K bugs. The funny thing is the code has moved from room sized mainframes to virtual machined on a cloud but the code is still older then dirt.

Dan sulin

I also have fond memories for the Stitch sandwich game, but I don’t think it stared Stitch himself! I believe you helped Stitch’s sandwich loving cousin Reuben ( voiced by Rob Paulsen) who is of course from the Lilo & Stitch animated series. I get it Stitch is the star attraction, but this is unintentional Reuben erasure.

Tyler Rampley

it wasn’t just stitch in that game it was the sandwich loving experiment 627 (?) too

issa horcrux

So happy Sweatbox is on the internet archive. It makes me wonder what other historical Disney gems are stored away there.

Jamie Wotton

Check out (SWEATBOX star) Sting’s CD-ROM game “All This Time.” Produced by Starwave.

Philip E.

Like Jayne, I too have a positive memory of helping Stitch build a big Dagwood-style sandwich on Go.com 😌

Don Bell

This popped up on my feed while I was at Tokyo Disneyland with my family, and I forced them to listen to a brief lecture from me on go.com. I'm so lucky they love me.

Amanda Qualls

Got curious so I went and checked Archive.org for the Sweatbox and it's available for streaming there. Don't sleep on Archive.org, y'all.

Chad Cartier

Oh, just seeing this title is getting me real stoked
