Wondrous item (key), uncommon

The handle of this small key is painted gold and inscribed with arcane runes that glow blue. Its teeth are geometrically shaped and seem to shift ever-so-slightly when focused on. This key is a trap skeleton key. Though it will unlock the first non-magical lock it is used on, it will simultaneously self-destruct and trigger a fireball spell (save DC 16) centered on the lock in which it is inserted.

A retired patriarch of the local thieves’ guild commissioned this key as a “gift” for a long-hated rival with whom he had recently “made amends.” He knows not when the key will be used, but that when it is, its user’s death is all but assured, consequences be damned.

Thanks for the advice. Just don't want to give anything away. Players pissed off someone really important recently and think they got off Scott free. This might be an interesting item to give them by an agent of the aggrieved party ;)

Its main function is as a magic skeleton key that can unlock any mundane lock, so that would be the trigger for the detect magic. Since the fireball effect is part of the purpose (and not a curse, as you said), the skeleton key magic would supercede it as the stronger magic for detection

Hmm, how would you deal with this item on a detect magic check? Obviously, it's not a cursed item, but what would you tell players about the dweomers emitted without necessarily giving away it's hidden "feature" :)
