Development Update - October

Now that the headache of funding the site is gone for a month, it has been slightly easier to put a little time into clarifying our path forward.

1) I'm working on migrating the entire frontend code to something that can actually be maintained. The site was originally programmed just before some modern technology came around, so it's a hack of so many gross and ugly code patterns that it's almost impossible to maintain. I've been rewriting it for a while now, but I finally have a path forward and more experience with the tools I was planning to use.

1.5) By the way, the public version of the site had a development freeze, and new code is going up at static.refsheet.net, which is unfinished. You can check that once in a while if you're ever curious. This new version is V3. I like how I never actually finished V2.

2) I just talked to Vector, my roommate and coworker at my day job, and I'm letting him spend up to 4 hours every Friday during work time to instead focus on moderating Refsheet once again. During these same 4 hours I will provide development time to this project. I'm funding this time by cutting into my primary work hours, so it's limited but it's something.

3) Every Friday, Vector will post an update here, on Patreon, and on Discord. Even if nothing happened, expect a meme or something.

Ultimately, I miss the time when I commissioned fun new art. It was thrilling, exciting, and so fulfilling. I understand that this website has been central to many other people who cherish the same feeling, and I can't take it away. Whether or not I can still commission art doesn't make it fair for me to entirely abandon the project for everyone else, so I will find time to make this work still.

Ive been using refsheet for a while! It's truly a huge help when commissioning art. Thank you for your hard work!

Thanks for the update, I was wondering what was going on!!

Having to make a choice like that sucks, but hopefully it'll be a choice that'll pay off in the future in terms of better usability and a stronger base of people who want to pay to use the tool. Refsheet is my favorite place to store info about my characters and I'm happy to see you continuing to improve it. 💜
