"Temporary" Email Notification System?

So, as it turns out, the notification system is complicated and I want to make it nice and friendly and super efficient before loading in tens of thousands of items. However, this will take a whole bunch of time and I don't want to keep people waiting!
I can, however, slowly roll notifications out backwards. That is, starting with emails, then going to browser push notifications, then the notification feed. At the very least, this would get you pinged when people reply to your forum threads, comment / like your pics, etc.
I also understand that emails are sometimes very annoying. Perhaps we can settle my internal debate?
I can quickly get emails up and going, but controlling them will take time. The fastest option is to enable all emails with a global opt-out to turn them off. Next up is enabling all emails, but you can turn off certain notification types. Or, I can focus on the feed, and do emails later?
Things you would get emailed about:
- User replies to your forum thread
- User comments on your pic
- User favs your pic
- User @ts you in a forum (maybe. We'll see.)
