The next chapter of the NF story begins! Thanks to a surge of new subscription sign-ups here at Patreon.com/NintendoForce since our last issue, we've soared past our latest stretch goal – meaning video content will now be created to support NF Magazine!
It's an exciting next step, and one that Nintendo Power never got to take before its cancellation at the end of 2012. YouTube was just beginning to become a daily fixture in gaming fans' lives back then, and livestreaming was in its infacy as well. Now, videos of all kinds are in constant rotation as a daily source for Nintendo fans to hear breaking news, see preview footage of upcoming games, watch classics played with added retrospective commentary and more. The speedrunning community has even taken livestreaming games and turned it into a multi-million dollar enterprise, raising tons of support for charity!
Altogether, video content creation seems like a smart way for the Nintendo Force to expand our reach and potential readership. But we don't want to do it alone! We want to hear from all of you. What kinds of video content do you think we should create? What kinds of videos do you find yourself watching most on other, existing YouTube channels? We don't want to simply replicate what other creators are already making elsewhere, but there are some staples like Let's Plays that seem like a good starting point.
In fact, that's the plan for starters! Since our hitting this video expansion stretch goal has lined up timing-wise with the arrival of the new Nintendo Switch, we'll begin our video content creation with Switch launch coverage! We've got some slick NF video elements pre-made and ready to roll (like the Let's Play/livestreaming overlay image I've attached here as a preview), and we're eager to get started soon! Weigh in with your ideas about types of videos through Patreon, then keep your eyes locked on YouTube.com/NFMagazine!
Expanding into video creation was our $13K goal, but you guys still need an update on the previous goal! When we hit $12K, the plan was to knock a few pennies off each pledge tier – so, for example, going from $4.99 down to $4.95 per issue for a print-only subscription. I thought that would be a straightforward adjustment to make. I was wrong!
After talking with Patreon support, it turns out that if I did adjust the prices on the tiers in that manner, everything would effectively blow up. Patreon never anticipated that any creator would ever want to do that, so they didn't build in the functionality – if I adjusted the prices, even downward, it would knock everyone currently signed up on each tier off. That would be a huge headache. Absolute chaos. And absolutely not worth it for a savings of less than a quarter for everyone over the course of a year.
So we need to scrap that old idea for the $12K goal and swap in something else. My thought is to push forward with another unique bonus item similar to the "Aloha from Alola" postcard we included alongside the Pokémon Sun & Moon issue. Not another postcard exactly, but just another nifty piece of printed material that would be a thematic match for the cover game of an upcoming issue. I already have an idea in mind, but I don't want to ruin it!
If you guys are cool with that, let me know! If you have other ideas, let me know those too!
Speaking of other ideas, I'd also like your input for what to shoot for next! The explosion of support that propelled us past the video expansion goal has taken us nearly halfway to $14K already. Do you guys want more bonus items? More contests/giveaways? More posters? Something we haven't yet done, but could reasonably do? Let us know, and we'll do our best to make it happen!
Thanks again for your support, everyone, and please look forward to the beginning of our video content creation very soon! (The plan is to finish up Issue #26, get it out the door to you all and then fully dive into our first batch of videos before the Switch hits store shelves.) Sound good?
