If I were much younger, I would focus on an education that would allow me to consider: 1: The development of a eco-friendly bio-degradable plastic-like material. 2: An algorithm for forest planning the that minimized the spread of wildfires and maximize our ability to put them out. 3: Develop an automated wildfire extinguishing system that uses autonomous drones and a satellite detection system. 4: Fool-proof nuclear energy usage (1% of the fusion budget should be enough). 5: Closed loop factory system that captures and recycles the waste produced by energy production and water usage. Make the list long enough and we might just make a dent in the climate crisis. P.S: I do not believe fusion investors are in it to save the world, I believe they are in it for the money. Meaning, if someone discovers a cheap novel method of producing sustainable fusion that could be brought to market, it would not see the light of day.

I just did a little looking on the internet and, oh boy have materials engineers delivered with practical applications of fundamental physics. Why do we invest money in fundamental esoteric research?
