Before Take That Robbie Sucks rant have to say that you need to find a later version of Babe to listen to. I’ve never heard one from this early and Mark’s voice really matured beautifully. If you listen to a version from 2010 on it’s a gorgeous song. Take That was created because of and for Gary Barlow. He was the vocal & songwriting talent discovered & signed. Because of the musical landscape the label thought a group would be a better launch for Gary and his music with him being lead. Robbie was the last signed and considered the most iffy from the start. All the rest of the group always got along and still do. Gary was too generous for his own good and when other members wanted to try leads he gave them songs (no one else was writing in the first version). Robbie got a big head that is still weighing down his tiny body, the ego that walks. Eventually after making everyone else miserable he decided to walk and he couldn’t just leave, he had to also tell a lot of extremely viscous lies about Gary Barlow to hide the fact he had no music of his own and just petty jealousy. So the group broke up, Gary was devastated by both the betrayal and the fact that people seemed to believe it because he wasn’t willing to play childish games and attack Williams. Hard to believe that today’s hugely successful Gary Barlow with endless hits for Take That, his solo albums, film soundtracks and several successful Westend & Broadway musicals was depressed, devastated and lost for 9 years. When Take That got back together minus the problem child in 2005 his life and career took off again and the mutually respectful line up of Gary, Mark, Howard and Jason had great success. Sadly they actually let Robbie back in for a bit when they were flying high and his dream of American stardom crashed and burned. Fortunately he soon reverted to being a nightmare being a bully during the recording process and an unreliable diva on tour. Happily they all agreed he had to go permanently part way through the tour and let him say he chose to leave just to get rid of him. There are a few excellent documentaries on all this. Eventually Jason didn’t want to tour anymore and from then to the current tour it’s been the core of Gary, Mark & Howard. They are true friends and enjoy the group, fans and each other. James Corden is a die hard Take That fan from the very beginning and has been going to concerts for years. There’s an excellent Take That Carpool Karaoke. Also, a great documentary for British TV called When Corden Met Barlow. They get into all the history and James has the best fan boy moment of his life when he gets to perform a Take That hit, full choreo and all with Gary during one of his solo concerts.
