Chapter 26 New offer

The knock on the door came precisely two days after Natasha Romanoff's first visit.

Peter, who had spent most of that time either researching Tony Stark or trying to calm Felicia's nerves (and his own), wasn't surprised.

He opened the door to find Natasha standing there, her red hair gleaming in the afternoon sun.

She was alone this time, which Peter took as a small positive sign.

"Peter Parker," she said, her voice as smooth and steady as before. "May I come in?"

Peter stepped aside, gesturing her inside.

Felicia was in the living room, having abandoned her pacing for a nervous fidgeting on the couch.

Her eyes darted to Peter, a silent question passing between them. He gave her a subtle nod, a silent promise to handle things.

Natasha walked into the living room, her gaze briefly sweeping over the space before settling on Peter and then Felicia.

There was no warmth in her expression, but there was also no overt threat. It was the same professional neutrality he'd seen before.

"I have a new proposition for you, Peter," Natasha began, getting straight to the point. "And for you, Felicia."

Peter braced himself. "What kind of proposition?" he asked, trying to keep his voice even.

"S.H.I.E.L.D. understands your reluctance to commit to full-time employment," Natasha said, her eyes fixed on him. "We recognize your desire for autonomy and privacy. Therefore, we've revised our offer."

She paused, letting her words sink in. Peter felt a flicker of surprise. This was unexpected.

"We would like to hire you on a case-by-case basis," Natasha continued. "No long-term contracts, no permanent attachment. You would be called upon for specific missions where your unique abilities would be invaluable. You'd have the right to accept or refuse each assignment, though we would, of course, expect a high degree of consideration for our requests."

Peter's mind raced. Case-by-case? This was significantly different from their initial, more forceful "offer." It gave him the flexibility he desperately needed, the ability to protect his secret while still doing good. It was a compromise, and frankly, it was probably the best he could hope for.

He glanced at Felicia. She was watching Natasha intently, her initial apprehension slowly giving way to a thoughtful expression.

"And Felicia?" Peter asked, turning back to Natasha. "What about her 'skill set'?"

Natasha's gaze shifted to Felicia. "Felicia Hardy's unique talents are also highly desirable. We propose a similar arrangement for her. Her abilities would be used in situations where infiltration, extraction, or precision acquisition are required. Of course, any past… transgressions… would be overlooked in exchange for her cooperation and a commitment to cease all unauthorized activities."

Felicia flinched at the word "transgressions," but the promise of overlooked pasts and no more "unauthorized activities" caught her attention.

Peter knew this was crucial for her. The thought of Felicia continuing her old ways, especially with S.H.I.E.L.D. now fully aware of them, had been a constant source of worry.

This was a chance for her to use her skills for legitimate purposes, to find a different path.

"So, no more 'strongly worded suggestions'?" Peter ventured, a hint of irony in his voice.

Natasha's lips curved into a faint, almost imperceptible smile. "Let's call it a mutually beneficial arrangement, Peter."

Her tone was still firm, but there was a subtle shift, a recognition of their individual needs.

"This is as far as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s generosity can extend. We believe this offer provides you with the flexibility you desire while allowing us to leverage your formidable capabilities when the world truly needs them."

Peter knew this was it. He couldn't refuse. This was the most reasonable offer they would get, and frankly, a refusal now would likely lead to less desirable outcomes.

He thought about the vanishing Tony Stark, the uncertainty in the world. Being able to help, even on a limited basis, felt right. And more importantly, it allowed him to protect Felicia.

He looked at Felicia, searching her eyes. She met his gaze, and a silent conversation passed between them.

He saw the apprehension, yes, but also a growing resolve. He knew her heart, and he knew she would stand by him, no matter what.

He had told her his deepest secret, his ability to travel between worlds.

That trust, that shared vulnerability, bound them together in a way nothing else could.

He saw in her eyes that she was ready to follow him, to face this new, complicated chapter together.

"I'll do it," Peter said, his voice clear and steady. "On those terms."

Natasha nodded. "And you, Felicia?"

Felicia took a deep breath, then squared her shoulders. "I'll do it," she said, her voice surprisingly firm. "But on one condition."

Natasha raised an eyebrow, a hint of curiosity in her eyes.

"No more stealing," Felicia continued, looking directly at Peter. "Not for S.H.I.E.L.D., not for myself. Nothing. I'm done with that life."

She reached out and took Peter's hand, squeezing it.

"Wherever my tiger goes, I go. And I'm going to be a better person for him."

Peter's heart swelled with affection and pride.

He squeezed her hand back, a silent promise of support. This was a huge step for her, a genuine commitment to change.

Natasha observed the exchange, her expression unreadable. "Very well," she said finally. "A commitment to legal and ethical conduct is a standard expectation for S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives. Your acceptance is noted."

She paused, then a new glint entered her eyes, something akin to a flicker of anticipation. "Now that we've established our working relationship, there's one more thing you both need to know."

Peter and Felicia exchanged a wary glance.

"From this point forward," Natasha stated, her voice dropping to a more personal, yet still authoritative, tone, "I will be your primary contact within S.H.I.L.D. I will be your instructor, guiding you through our protocols and procedures. And when we are on missions, I will be your co-worker. We will be working closely together."

Peter's eyes widened. Natasha Romanoff, seemed to be a high level agent.

This was a game-changer. It meant a deeper level of involvement, a more personal connection than he had anticipated.

It also meant a constant presence, a reminder that S.H.I.E.L.D. was now deeply entwined in their lives.

Felicia, too, seemed surprised, but a slow, almost mischievous smile began to spread across her face.

"Well, isn't this going to be interesting," she murmured, a hint of her old playful self returning.

Natasha's faint smile returned.

"Indeed. We have a lot of ground to cover. Starting tomorrow, we'll begin your initial briefing and assessment. Be ready. This new life won't be easy, but it will be necessary. For all of us."

With that, she gave a curt nod and turned to leave.

As she walked out the door, Peter knew their lives had just taken an irreversible turn.

The path ahead was uncertain, filled with hidden dangers and unknown challenges.

But looking at Felicia, who was now smiling genuinely, a sense of quiet determination settled over him.

They weren't alone. They had each other, and together, they would face whatever came next.

The world might be shifting on its axis, but they would find their balance, together.
