This piece has been sitting around for a few days, I kept coming back to it before finally posting it. I probably overthink things too much haha.
After my famous struggles with colors, I realized I also have a thing with framing: I tend to make 'full things' and then struggle when it comes to cropping. Cutting pieces off a drawing you’ve worked on is so frustrating haha. But here is a good example: cropping it made me love it more!
I’ve been enjoying this style a lot. At first it was just meant to be quick and “sketchy” so I could keep it chill, but over time it refined itself. I’m still chasing that sweet spot between flat colors and just enough shading (but not too much!), kinda hard. I know that one thing what really defines my style are expressive lines. For those who’ve followed me for a while, you know that’s always been my thing and every time I try to go for cleaner, thinner lines, I just can’t (you can see that in the Subway piece (with joris), even if the colors make up for it a bit).
With this art style I really work on the lines: there's a main line layer, a colored-line layer, and two or three “extra line” layers on top to give them different treatments haha.
Sorry for rambling, I just felt like sharing some process thoughts!
I’ll probably make a full post breaking down the art and the workflow in the comic sometime soon.
I’m excited for the upcoming update btw, I think I finally nailed the action in this scene!
