Flimpo Friday Update (1-19-24)

Hello everyone! Welcome to a special Ren edition of Flimpo Friday! Milo's not feeling well, so you've got me for this week.

Like last week, we've been toiling away at Mandelbrot Hall. Milo created a "breakdown list" - listing all the characters, locations, props, and effects that we need to develop for pre-production.

With Maven's turnaround finished, Reid continues on his path to rotate all of Mandelbrot Hall's cast (he's very good at it). Reid and I have also been jointly been working on expression sheets, which has been a lot of fun. Meanwhile, Milo's been working on background design, and it's looking really cool.

Once we've got a sizeable chunk of the design work squared away, we can confidently move into storyboards. Exciting!

Also, we got to hang out with one of the composers for the Mandelbrot Hall pilot this week- Zee! She's worked on Milo's film Jupiter and Europa as well of all three Flimpos' thesis films from college. We showed the script to her, hung out, and went to the aquarium to see some real life Flimpos (not us- the jellyfish kind).

Flimp on, Flimpos!

....

...Are you still there? Good. This is a special Ren edition Flimpo Friday. Let's go off the rails a bit with some rare Mandelbrot Hall content. Some of you may know that I began developing this concept in my last semester of college, for an animated series development class that I took with Milo.

Here are the character synopses for Jackie and Maven that I wrote for that class:

JACKIE

Jackie hopes to find her feet in her first year at art university, but she hasn’t quite yet learned how to walk. From growing up as an oft-overlooked middle child to living among self-assured upperclassmen, Jackie is quick to abandon her own opinions to please others. Dreams of painting immersive wall-to-wall murals or fantastic fictional worlds are quashed by the mildest, most well-meaning critiques. Echoing well-received stances never seems to fail in greasing the gears of social life.

When the world starts falling apart around her, Jackie has no choice but to overcome her passive nature. She needs to build conviction that yes, [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS] existed, and no, she’s not just being a scatterbrained dreamer. She has to pluck up to convince others to believe her and figure out how to salvage the world.

MAVEN

Jackie’s roommate, and a film bro. Yeah, you might know the type… have you ever heard of Tarantino? Maven can tell you all about him. This know-it-all, despite only being in his second year at university, will never pass up an opportunity  to over-confidently educate anybody about the superiority of  period films.

Maven takes a particular interest in Jackie. Finally, Maven isn’t the youngest one in their group! Not only that, but  Jackie seems to go along with everything he says. That doesn’t happen too often, and despite his arrogant attitude,  he craves external validation. Maybe he’s not the most helpful ally in preventing the world from disappearing, but he’s something.

If you've read this far, thanks! Let's not make the others suspicious, so maybe comment something like, "wow ren, what a cool and very ordinary flimpo friday post!" Yeah. That'll do.
