To many dragons Blaze is a total enigma, a piece of an otherwise logical puzzle that just does not fit. She's certainly pretty, the dragons reason, but Torch isn't the type of dragon to break with tradition and create a whole new, extremely powerful position for her just because of that. Not to mention she's petite, weak, from a low-ranking family of unskilled fighters, and what's more, deaf. Just how did a dragoness like her manage to convince the fearsome Torch to marry her? The move was unprecedented and a huge abdication of power for the big guy.
One thing is for sure, she somehow holds a lot of sway over the old drake! Does she know his secrets? Is that why her world was silenced?
Though dragons who are close to Dragon Lord Torch know better than to underestimate his wife, Dragon Lord Consort Blaze. She is every bit as fearsome as her husband, but in a way dragons generally aren't prepared for. She has the terrifying ability to weaponize the preconceived notions and overconfidence of other dragons against themselves.
As for Torch, he wasn't completely opposed to following tradition until he met Blaze. He wanted to become a father but believed that his title (among other things) made it impossible to have the kind of relationship he really wanted with a dragoness, so he figured he might as well prioritize the nation by making the most politically sound matches for himself. When push came to shove he could never bring himself to do so, though.
This was the Dragon Lord's dilemma: he could have whatever he wanted, including any dragoness he fancied, but he couldn't have love. Or so he thought.
Notes:
The term "Dragon Lord" was translated from the Draconic word that means "the exalted one who roams among common beings". It is a specific, gender neutral title and can therefore neither be shortened to Lord, nor changed to Lady.
In dragon society marriage acts as an equalizer in the sense that spouses share the same rank and status. As I mentioned in the description of a different piece, Dragon Lords don't typically get married but have multiple consorts instead. None of the Dragon Lords before Torch married and the title their consorts held was simply "Consort". This allowed Dragon Lords of the past to retain their lofty position above all of the other dragons and have no official ties to the castes and clans of their consorts.
It is for these reasons that Blaze's title upon marrying Torch was "Dragon Lord Consort". It was also for these reasons that the marriage itself was such a big deal.
