Ooh, so Lichen's going to be traveling with Rask? I like that! At least he won't be alone, and he'll likely learn a lot from Lichen. I can't help but wonder if he'll just miss the wolves, and it'll be up to Oren to realize that Swift is being genuine when she approaches later on. That'll lead to pretty good development for both Oren and Rask. This past chapter has shown that, while Oren is definitely MORE open-minded than most, he still has learning to do. Bringing hunters to the Hollow wasn't even something he initially planned for. He was working to create a way for prey animals to fight back and learn to not be afraid, because of what happened to his mother in the One-Eyed Wolf story. Egg was a fluke who was taken in out of sympathy after Hemlock broke her teeth. Rask threw a wrench into everything Oren thought he knew. I wonder when he'll realize that his lesson of "mastering one's instincts" doesn't always mean the same thing. For prey, going above their instincts means to stop running away and learn to fight back. For predators, it means learning to resolve things without their teeth and claws, and mastering their hunger enough to choose what to eat and who not to eat.

Poor Egg. Even looks like they shrank a little, so despondent...

More writers should try imagining worlds where sapience emerges simultaneously across many species already in close contact with each other. But multiple hominids is just obscure sci-fi. And anything else would struggle to distinguish from zootopia.

I also love Lichen's little huff at "it's a dangerous world", nice callback to his belief that the world is NOT dangerous, at least to him

"He chose to make a tooth with it" is such an incredible line, and a nice turnaround by Rask. He doesn't regret failing Oren, he regrets *believing* in someone who still views life in terms of death. And it's very interesting that up until now, nobody had acknowledged that metal has uses besides weaponry

Gale Tazzin

Of course. He has had his societies 'acceptance' thrown back a him. He can nolonger preach at how open they are.

Hi Teagan, I just realized this now. If history would move towards the fact that predators would form alliances with herbivores and if predators stopped hunting (maybe not all of them) and herbivores would not be afraid of being hunted, their evolution would go in a completely different direction, maybe even separate species of animals, predators that hunt and that do not hunt. What I mean is that they would be significantly different from the animals we know, for example in terms of anatomy. Using tools would also have an impact on evolution.

And Lichen's all like: "Can we go now?" :D By the way, judging from the color, he seems to be carrying the flowers which he collected together with Rask and Egg. Nice continuity :).

Oren doesn’t look happy
