Rask learning to look at the wolves the same way he wishes the other animals of Stone Hollow to look at him. <3 He absolutely took the lesson to heart.

The author has stated fish and birds and bugs etc are not "sapient" in the same way, just all the mammals! I'm sure the fish feel the same way real world fish do though - which still is something, and an instinct/desire to survive. Looked like a normal fish being fished to me, and respect certainly still comes into that. :)

I'm reminded of the look on the fish when they were being caught... all of the life is sapient/sentient in this universe... so, at some point you just have to make concessions and be respectful, I suppose.

It does hurt my heart seeing them still view Rask as an Other and try to sort of... push him into more stereotypical roles that they expect and are comfortable with a predator having. He's learned to have compassion for prey and see them as individuals who's lives have equal value. The prey haven't really examined their own biases the same way. He took their message about community and safety to heart. But when he actually acts in a way contrary to what they expect of "his kind," he's met with frustration and suspicion. He's under so much more scrutiny and given so much less benefit of the doubt compared to others in the Hollow, though he's never harmed them. It feels he's fighting their prejudice more than anything in himself at this point Really good storytelling. I love all these characters and their conflicts feel so real and sympathetic on every side

I'm enjoying watch Rask grow and develop. I think this is a very big conclusion for him to reach. I understand it may be in contradiction to his prior promise to the others, but I think it fits in with the theme this story is planning to take. I'm rooting for our little marten.

Hemlock may be right that some animals need to die, but what Rask is saying is that *he* won't be the one to kill them, and that it isn't fair of Oren to ask that of him. Someone else can wield the spear

Gale Tazzin

Oren's response reminds me of when Rask first entered the hollow and Sprig said Egg "just wasn't what a badger should be", praised Rask for killing a fish, and argued that Rask could be used to hunt predators. Rask must feel so lonely, his only allies don't view him any differently than those who want him kicked out

Gale Tazzin

You can’t just stop killing other animals Rask. Hemlock may lean on some extreme methods, but she was right when she said “it depends on whose blood you spill”, there are some predators that really can’t be bargained with. Even dream Quanaq told you that natural selection still exists here, but the tables have turned on a group of animals.

Microgrampup

Knowing swift we're of course relieved for her mostly unharmed escape. But I can see Oren finding danger created by the appearance of an organized warren of pacifist prey. Why hunt at all when this buffet thinks scaring you is effective? Maybe Rask would still be willing to kill when the situation is much more dire... can't wait to see what happens next. Either way, I'd be happy he's out there trying.

Oren.. He is not just a convienent killing machine to do the Hollow's dirty work...

Marcwolf

Wasn’t he eating fish with Egg?

Dhaka Yeena

Has he been starving himself to keep this pledge I wonder?

Liyoht

Poor Rask. The way he thought he could align his views of NO MORE killing to everyone, and he's hitting roadblocks everywhere he goes.
