Oren's Forge PG 237

You know this is actually a -really- good sign from Swift. One of the earliest indicators of Human civilization is finding skeletons where the leg bones have broken and then healed at some point while the person was alive. That's not an injury you can recover from solo, you would starve. She has more in common with Oren's bunch, even Hemlock's bunch, than she does with her own people. They look after their wounded, she looks after their wounded... The other wolves it would seem, do not, at least not ones that can't hunt with the rest.

Fear the rabbit! <3

Oof. I highly doubt Swift is going to abandon Red. I wonder if this will lead to her and Red separating from the pack and going into the forest. I know the wolves are antagonists to Oren's group, but I really want to see them become allies, though that seems impossible considering their circumstances.

Is he blind or trying to avoid the rabbit?

In a way, leaving Red to die would’ve been the practical choice that benefited the pack as a whole. And with their belief system, it probably *would* have been seen as better for him to bleed out in the open than slowly in a dark cave and probably with a horrible infection, if blood loss didn’t get him before that. But Swift’s father (and Seral) are both still being narrow-minded because they’re asking Swift to leave behind her mate, and even they should know that’s a deeper level of attachment than “just some pack member.” Would her father have just left her behind if she’d been injured as a pup? Maybe, but I bet he wouldn’t have done it as easily as he seems to think she should with Red. Also the eye contact and the panic you can see in that middle panel with Swift and Red is really well done. You have Swift’s father talking about leaving Red behind and how much better it would’ve been for them all, and Red looking absolutely terrified and desperate to not be left behind. It makes for a really nice contrast with the needs of the many on one side, and the reality of what it actually looks like to do that on the other.

Hemlock’s not going to like where this might be going. Swift cares too much about her pack to worry about whether or not her next meal is rabbit or fish and eggs. It’s funny how she doesn’t take her own advice about predators not being stupid.

So that’s what Swift was talking about when she said that Seral was only thinking about himself. He just doesn’t know any better, he abondoned red out of what he was taught to be a necessity of survival. Luckily, Oren is creating a society where they might be able to “put a stone over that” as Sprig said about the rules of survival for prey.

Dad's getting a bit long in the tooth.

If anyone else also felt furious at her father as a kneejerk reaction, remember that our modern sensibilities were established through a lifetime of living in civilization with centuries of history and philosophy to look back on and learn; an incomprehensibly different world than they live in. It's too easy for me too judge, and so very hard to keep an open mind.

TheGreatSako

Was afraid of this, but it was kind of obvious. After getting stabbed in the eye by a rabbit, he really is blind.
