Oren's Forge PG 222

Comments

Oh by the way, is there a synopsis for Incursion?

Microgrampup

Vol. 1 showed that Oren doesn't only have “stick them” as his only method though. Oren understood that the hunting group could ambush Rask’s dad to help increase their chances of safely stopping him.

(Sorry for a lot of words, but hopefully this answers your questions somewhat!) The animals of the Hollow are largely disparate individuals but some probably have a buddy system if they go out. They are not like a human society, where you’d expect deeper levels of cooperation, but rather little groups of different species sharing a protective space and to some degree, resources. Some animals (Hemlock, Oren, Sibyl, Rask, kinda) see more potential, but that’s what makes them special. Knowing you have the start of a good idea doesn’t translate to what to do with it, however. Maybe one day the Hollow will look like a cohesive unit, but they are still more-or-less refugees feeling out the space of living in close contact with other species. Oren, if anything, is probably spending his time training curious animals to smelt copper (Egg eludes to it earlier in Volume One,) or napping in the sun— he’s an old dude. Killing, or teaching the art of killing, doesn’t come naturally to a hare, at least in the way you mean. I don’t know what he could train them to do, anyway— there’s no methodology beyond ‘stick them with the pointy end.’ Anything else hasn’t been invented yet— there’s no ‘fighting styles,’ no ancient wisdom. Copper teeth, the empowerment of standing up to death, are wholly new. Also, I don’t think many animals in this world really grasp what a ‘future’ is, especially beyond the immediate need to secure resources for survival. Most of them are still coming to grips with a reality where they can sleep through the night without waking at every sound. Rask, in the first few pages of the Vol One, is stunned by Quanaq suggesting his life could mean something other than running until he died— Rask literally had no concept of himself as an individual, just an inevitable meat-snack. These are all relatively simple-minded creatures right on the precipice of something big (ie, civilization and the trappings of morality).

Question, do all the animals of the hollow try to never go out into the woods alone? Also how come Oren isn't training anyone to kill predators? Sprig said that Hemlock and Oren were the only ones to actually kill predators, what does he expect the hollow to do if he isn't always there?

Microgrampup

*ksshh ksshh* Alpha, there's one contact spotted in the forest, 200 meters to the north from your position. Over. *ksshhh*

Nightwolf Starlight

I'm willing to bet one of them is going back worse for wear.

BritishRabbit

OOOH it is isn't it! Thank you for the reminder!

TJ Hedges

Not Oren. Oren's left ear tip is missing from an old injury. I would be more worried about Hemlock's crew to start with.

Petrov Neutrino

This is true, I just thought the ears looked familiar.

TJ Hedges

If anyone's wise to the wolves' relationship with the raven, it'd be Oren. He'd probably be the reason they'd be on high alert, I don't see him rushing to the front line.

Arcticfox

D= Are those Oren's ears? I'M WORRIED.

TJ Hedges

Well, time for a real challenge for the hollow! Considering how well Hemlock did against Rask's dad, this ... might not go well.
